Not everyone has the option to stand in a few hours + line on launch day. I have a job, so preordering was my best option at the time. If the preorders fell to backorder status, then why randomly fill those orders? I see orders that were placed after mind for the same device and carrier get filled yet mine remains processing.

So all in all, I chose not to simply "get over it" but I appreciate the suggestion.

Then I guess you should have gotten up earlier to pre-order, if that was your only option and it was that important. Otherwise I'd have to assume it wasn't that important to you, and am confused why it's a big deal now.

As to why yours is still in processing, they get processed out and shipped in batches. It's quite possible yours is already shipped but the info from the batch has not been fully updated in the system yet.

If you really feel that wronged by Apple, refuse delivery, get a refund and buy a different phone.

64GB AT&T ordered at 4:06a EST on 9/14 from the Apple App. Card was charged the full amount and went to Preparing for Shipping yesterday a little before 10pm. Just got my CSS email from AT&T around 5:53 EST. I've seen people's phones ship that ordered 5-6 hours after me. Hopefully mine is here shortly.

This was a terrible launch. I don't remember any other launch that left so many angry customers. They screwed it up big time. I felt like I got screwed twice..the first time when I placed my preorder only to find out the next day that the ship date was 2 weeks late. The second time was when I went the the Apple store where they had what I wanted but when I wanted to cancel my preorder I couldn't because it was already 'preparing for shipment'. So I had to leave the store empty handed. And worse still is that since this morning it's still in that 'prepared for shipment' limbo which seemed to have been perfectly timed to prevent customers from canceling and buying at the store. I wonder if I'm gonna get screwed a third time somehow.

So let me get this straight. It was Apple's fault that you had a whole week to cancel your order so you could easily go to the store and pick one up?

Bad Apple. Bad Apple.

Yes it was. I didn't figure on the stores having any left when I got there based on previous years so I left the order in. Now do me a favor and don't answer.

I guess we have to agree to disagree. I never said I was wronged. Just that it's frustrating. Apple could have handled this better. That's all I'm saying. You seem to be making a bigger deal out of my situation than I am. Not sure why you're bothering with it so much.

Congrats. That's awesome! :)

My status was updated earlier this morning to 'preparing to ship' and my applecare + is showing as 'complete'. I have been billed for the applecare; however, I am still showing no charge for the phone... Anyone else not charged yet? I ordered thru Apple.

I agree it was not the smoothest launch. Funny, as I thought the new iPad into was great. reasonable order times, arrived on time, etc.

Am I the only one that doesn't work for?? 32 gig preparing for shipment since last night and 16 gig preparing for shipment since this afternoon.. No tracking shows up for me

^^^ Nope, not alone <sigh>

Maybe they are being shipped FedEx??? One can be hopeful! I would double check the phone number you have saved in your apple account. I realized that the number I had saved as my contact info was no longer accurate.

Consider these pre-order numbers (first 24 hours):
iPhone 4: 600,000
iPhone 4S: 1,000,000
iPhone 5: 2,000,000

I don't think demand for the iPhone doubles every year. I think more and more people like myself have been turning to pre-ordering instead of trying find one after work on launch day. I tried that latter with the iPhone 4 launch and had absolutely no luck and ended up having to get one on backorder.

Trying to balance how many they need to keep for pre-orders and how many to promise to AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Radioshack, Apple Stores, and a myriad of other domestic and international carriers and stores must be a daunting task.

Ok, I got my iPhone 5

The phone I pre-ordered is still "preparing to ship" but the Apple store in Indianapolis had the same phone so.. I paid full retail (that's ok) and will take the phone I pre-ordered to the Apple store for a refund when it arrives. That way, when a better phone is made available, I'll have two upgrades (mine and my wife's)...

After I had to give up my phone at the apple store because of this preparing to ship crap, i was walking through the mall tonight and att and radio shack BOTH had units in stock. Radio Shack had all three carriers!...gahhhhhh. Not being able to cancel is a joke.

I just found it funny that someone (wasn't even you, the person I directly quoted in my first post) thought that people should not have been able to go to a store today and get the phone since they couldn't get their preorder in on time and had to wait.

That and the fact that this happens EVERY YEAR, and every year people act surprised. I pre-order every year, sometimes I get it launch day, sometimes not. I have a friend who goes to the AT&T store on his way to work, every year, walks in, no line, gets the phone, and heads on in to work. It's been this way since the 3GS launch. And every year, people bring up the same topics. So yea, I find it really interesting that iPhone users on this forum have long term memories that seem to max out at about 11 months. Maybe it's all the cellphone radiation :p

Mine has shipped and has a tracking number now but it still doesn't come up with the Reference Number method even though the first activity happened 20 hours ago.

Ordered my white 64g iPhone 5 1:30 AM PST sept 14th. Preparing for shipping status since 2:00 AM sept 21st. I guess my expectations are set way too high for apple. Its just a phone but Apple amps us up and does their best to get us itching to have their latest creation. Booo Apple. U let us down. Like waking up Cristmas morning to find no gifts under the tree. Just a note from Santa saying he will stop by sometime mid January. :/ not like we can call apple customer service and ask for a free iPhone cover since they let us down. Apple gets by with anything beacause we will take what we can get. Wonder how long they can ride this wave of superiority.

When you're on the UPS page what reference numbers does it have? Mine has been preparing to ship for a while with no luck by reference. I'm wondering if Apple is using other stuff for the reference numbers too

Edit: you might need to be logged into (free?) MyChoice account to see all the ref numbers; not sure

This is only my second time. I only upgrade on major releases and came in a month into the 3G. For the 4 I wandered into an AT&T store on preorder day on a whim. I couldn't do that this time and was hoping apple.com would work out. Had no idea preorders would sell that fast.

Apple emailed me at 7am and says delivery expected on 9/27

Preorder from Apple at 4:05 am EST on Sept 14. At that point it said two week delivery and the item would arrive on Oct 2nd. Today (21st) my card was finally charged. Went to my Apple account and the delivery date changed from Oct 2 to Oct 5.

Great, just great
