I'm in the "stuck in china" boat and have been for about 36 hours now.

I'm sorry, I have to speak out against this line of reasoning. Pre-orders are not meant to guarantee delivery before the phone is available in retail channels. If that we're true, people could "pre-order" at 7:59am on launch day and take all the phones out of the retail channel. Not just Apple stores, but Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. All would have to check pre-orders before selling a phone to someone in the store.

What pre-ordering guarantees you is a phone. You were given an expected ship and delivery date, and you made the calculated choice as to whether it made more sense to accept that deal or take your chances at retail. Now Apple is delivering earlier than promised, and you're still complaining.

Never mind. I'm not going to respond because it tends to turn ugly after this point.

Flight Info For: Chek Lap Kok, 09/23/2012 4:46 P.M. Departure Scan

For anyone who's tracking info shows: Chek Lap Kok, 09/23/2012 4:46 P.M. Departure Scan, I researched and found out which flight our iPhones went out on.

It was Cathay Pacific Airways flight 3272, which arrived in Anchorage at 9:23am AKDT. Once in Anchorage, there's some Customs stuff that has to happen before the outbound flight departs. With the lag times before the UPS site has been updated for the previous legs of my iPhone's journey, I wouldn't be surprised if this shipment has already left Anchorage but the tracking info just isn't updated yet. Without that tracking info 'departure time', I can't yet research that flight info.

I'd say if you live in Seattle, there's a remote chance you could get your iPhone on Monday, especially if your order went out as 'Worldwide Express'. Definitely by Tuesday.

While it would've been nice to get mine on launch day, I do kind of like that I'm getting one that was actually assembled in September. If there were any production line kinks corrected in the initial batch, we'll be getting iPhones that were a result of that :)

If someone here knows about the inner workings of UPS maybe they can give us their thoughts as to why many of us in here have seen no movement since this:

My guess is that updates will churn out once we hit a business day. It is Sunday... :/

Let's all be positive and think that the worst case scenario would be delivery on the 28th and anything sooner will be a delightful surprise! ;)

The people lined up at the stores know they're taking a chance. When you pre-order you're supposed to be guaranteed delivery on launch day. Otherwise all you did was a back order.

I don't see how that's any different from people lining up to pre-order. They're taking a chance lest the preorder stock runs out.

It has to go from the factory there to an airport, probably Hong Kong, VHHH

Not when you preorder only an hour after it started. At that point it didn't seem like anyone was 'taking a chance'. Maybe the next day, but not an hour into it.

Wouldn't it have already gone from the factory to the UPS facility by the time of the top line?

Well, that's just a matter of degrees. One hour, one day, one week. At some point, the number of phones available to be delivered on the 21st was going to run out. If you're suggesting they cannibalize all retail-channel phones as well, it would still only extend that period by some amount. And again, there is a limit regarding what is a legitimate "pre-order." Can someone order before the Apple store (or Wal-Mart or Target) opens on the 21st and still demand delivery that day? Of course not.

Apple stated there would be phones available for purchase online starting the 14th. They also stated there would be phones in stores on the 21st. Both of these were true. They never made any promises about when phones ordered online would be delivered, nor whether everyone who wanted a phone on the 21st would be able to purchase in-store. I'm baffled as to what people would have preferred. They're fulfilling orders faster than they predicted, and faster than those of us who missed the 9/21 orders agreed to. I'm very happy with the service.

'Expedited' vs. 'Express' Shipping

Anyone know how they determine the shipping method? Mine went out via 'Express' -- but I didn't choose that when I ordered.

I have a couple guesses, but that's all they are:

Guess #1: I paid AT&T's $250 surcharge for an early upgrade

Guess #2: My city is the first stop for the UPS flight once it departs Anchorage

Anyone who had their pre-order depart Hong Kong at 8:30pm see any movement? Mine has been sitting there since late last night/early this morning...

neither, it was your only option of shipping. you actually didn't choose other than shipping or in store pick up IIRC.

im pretty sure Hong Kong to the USA isn't that quick.

Can anyone please reply to me?

I bought the iPhone 5 at my local Verizon store 9/16 and got a delivery date of 10/5, any chance it will ship any sooner? I haven't received any new information..

Im on that flight as well but a previous post mentioned using Cathay Pacific Airways for another flight and sure enough I found a flight around 8:30 from HK to AK thay arrived around 2am AK time.

There's a good chance our phones are either on a flight to Louisville or already arrived.

We'll probably see some updates from UPS this evening.

Unknownbeing and Mr. RPG, your Pre-orders were somewhat long after the initial 9-14 date. If last week to this week just for the 14tg 4AM-5PM crowd is any indication, I'd say yours won't ship until next weekend. But hopefully they have their stock figured out soon, since they obviously have stock to send to stores.

That's not really an accurate account. They opened pre-orders for delivery on 9/21, that was announced and also presented on the web site. Many people started their transaction and by the time they completed or received their confirmation e-mail had a later delivery date. Its analogous to a car dealer offering new car payments of $99 per month, but failing to declare this only applies to 1 vehicle in the advertisement.

There would probably be a lot less hard feelings about this if the pre-order didn't start in the middle of night for most. You can try to paint a rosy picture of it, but the simple fact is the online pre-order was done very poorly this time around.

Actually, the problem is people think there is going to be some way for Apple to roll out a product like this and make everyone happy. There simply are never going to be enough iPhones at launch to "guarantee" delivery on launch day for people who ordered by a deadline they've made up in their heads. I ordered at 12:04am. By the time AT&T cleared my eligibility, it was around 1:15am and I'd been moved to the Oct. 5th delivery date. It said so clearly before I pressed purchase, and said so again in my confirmation email and on my order progress page on Apple.com right next to the "cancel order" button. I can't for the life of me explain the rage on here except that everyone in the world wants their iPhone right away, not matter what. There's nothing Apple will ever be able to do about that.

Sounds possible! Yeah I saw your post earlier I do think we are on the same flights... Just was surprised to see no movement, but wasn't sure if UPS wasn't updating cause it was Sunday or not... So yeah we will see what happens later tonight

Thank you for your most accurate assessment. I agree 100%, especially w/regard to the hour at which they started. If it had been started 12 hours later it would have been much more convenient, though I have a feeling they would have sold out in 5 minutes instead of an hour. But at least it would have given all of America a fair crack at it, from Hawaii (10am) to the East Coast (3pm).
