Its still hard to believe that Apple would change the dock connector to a micro dock or micro USB.

It would KILL iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPad 3 sales.

If Apple caves to the bullying of the (collapsing) EU, then the company is in trouble.

Micro USB is a terrible connector.
You get 10% of what the dock connector offers in terms of pin out compatibility.

So not only will it render your current adapters useless, but would also drive up the cost of new adapters.

It won't be micro usb. Micro dock perhaps. Mini-Thunderbolt? :)

Why? "Kill" seeems rediculously overdramatic. Frustrating to have two cords for multiple devices (and how horrible is that really) but for those with just an iPhone, they won't even notice.

Calm it down a bit, you know nothing of their reasoning.

Yeah, cause everyone I know buys iDevices for the dock connector. It's sooooo fun to play with...

Nah, but a thunderbolt connection is definitely on my wish list.

Apple generated a TON of press when they tried pulling the leaked iPhone 4 (Gizmodo) and iPhone 4S (CNET reported the loss at a SF Bar Cava 22 in Aug 2011). Apple sent the security gestapos to get the stuff back, and ultimately the head of security at Apple was let go, in my understanding.

Maybe NOT freaking out when the actual device is leaked is a better way to keep things quiet.... just saying.

This is a good point I reckon. Imagine for a moment that this is a REAL part for the iPhone 5. Apple now have a problem. They can either:

1. Leave it alone and do nothing. Then it is only us sad geeks discussing on a few forums and clearly we are 50-50 split and undecided if it is for real. Represents maybe 0.001% of potential end users.

2. Come down like a ton of bricks and send in the Stormtroopers. This in itself immediately verifies that it is a genuine part, and will have it all over the news.......maybe alerting 20%+ of potential users worldwide.

They tried the tough scarey approach in the past and it pretty much backfired by creating even more publicity.

So if I was in Apple and these were genuine leaked parts - I would be pissed off - but would be doing the same - nothing!

No it wouldn't.

Why would anyone buy an iDevice knowing that its dock connector makes it obsolete and that manufacturers aren't going to support it moving forward?

Unless they release an iPad 3.5 then it is 100% stupid to buy one.

For those of you think this is real:

You have to explain why Apple hasn't had these shots and videos taken down.

If they are real, Apple would probably have HAD to pursue legally. NDA's work in two directions.

If company A is allowed to freely disregard the NDA, company B, likewise with an NDA, may say something to the effect, "Apple's not enforcing these things anymore and we can make a crap ton telling all these other guys what the secret design is, so let's leak."

This isn't good for Apple...why have NDA's at all if you're not going to enforce them?

Also, this is intellectual property we're talking about. You have to enforce your rights or risk losing them (true in almost all law, but especially so in IP). These are called trade secrets, and you can't enforce them on one person/entity while you've allowed your "secret" to otherwise become public. This is the reason for a TON of IP litigation.

What other company do you know who more rigorously defends it's IP? Why would they stop now?

I kind of like this look, so convince these are real.

When Gizmodo posted the pics of the iPhone 4 (and after every other blog in the world reposted them) Apple didn't have them taken down.
They asked for their phone back but that was it.
The pictures remained.
Once the bell is rung it can't be un-rung.

I love this design and I hope it's true. It portrays a subtle nod to the original iPhone that was released 5 years ago, which was my favorite design behind the iPhone 4/4s design.

Is it October yet?

----------

My 4 is too heavy.

Yikes. Invest in a 5 lb. weight, my friend.

What are they going to buy instead? An even less supported device? All those existing accessories aren't going anywhere for a few years. Honestly, some people might buy an iPad 3 or iPhone 4S because it's their last chance to buy a device that has the old dock connector that works with all the accessories they already have (without an adaptor).

If they are changing the dock connector, there will be an awkward transition, no matter how you do it, but it won't kill sales.

Unless they are changing the numbering systems there's really nothing the carriers have to worry about. It will be a seamless move for them.

for some carriers maybe,
but not all.

in countries where the phones are unlocked and can be used on any network, thats where the issues will start. they won't have enough time to add/move to the standard

i still don't see it happening this year, its too soon of a shift.
and this iPhone design was made before nano sims become a standard.
so i stand by what i said

I think the aluminum back is better than glass and the shiny plastic on top and bottom match the front of the iPhone under an above the screen so it's like having a shiny band all around the iPhone on top and bottom NICE!!!

It does seem plausible and to be honest, a "unibody" iPhone makes sense, falls more inline with Apple's other products.

But, is it me or does moving the headphone jack to the bottom mean you lose the symmetry of the grills? Maybe Jony Ive had one too many brain storming sessions up in his design studio... thats the only part I don't like. Other than that, bring it on...

Its another iPhone... I am on a 24 month contract so I'll be waiting for the 5S :s

Remember when I think it was gizmodo that had the iPhone 4 that was lost t a bar .... Apple didn't tell them toremove the pics or vids etc only asked for their phone back so why would apple tell them this time to remove the pics and videos?

I doubt that the next iPhone will use the nano-sim but you can't rule it out.
Apple knew that their design would be the approved one.
Even the competitors knew and redesigned their proposals to better fall in line with Apple's proposal.
Of all the designs under final review, all of them were pin/pad compatible with Apple's. Only the minor exterior dimensions differed.
Apple could have had the electronics done well ahead of time and only have to make last-minute changes to the sim-card tray.

Sorry if this has been said already, but this occured to me:

If this is indeed the final design of the iphone's back, perhaps Apple is pushing a "Smart Cover" for the iPhone the way it has become ubiquitous with the iPad? But the back would be completely covered except for the camera slot, with a tiny magnetic cover to protect--for the first time--the iphone's screen? You could simply open the cover to turn on the iPhone, much like the Smart Cover activates the iPad.

If this was the case, it would save Apple some repair costs for broken screens/backs, and it would minimize the importance of the two-tone design (because the design would be hidden anyway.)

Maybe Apple will offer the cover at a price that would dictate mass adoption, or at least a bit more reasonably priced than the iPad's smart cover.

Last time I checked the main cable was going into an USB male plug. Have I missed something?

Oh - btw - I love it that my Micro USB car adapter (different mobiles, different dedicated GPS navigational systems) has been working with any device I throw at it. But basically Apple's customers seem to be afraid of choice.

Yes, you missed something.
The standard sync cable terminates in a USB plug but the Apple dock connector does much much more than just sync.
Audio out, video out, syncing, remote control, HDMI, etc.
This is the functionality you'd lose by going with the standard Micro-USB.

No one will put a smart cover on a phone. It goes in and out of you pocket and would fall off. Would never happen.

Exactly.

(but but but USB! )
