Last time I checked the main cable was going into an USB male plug. Have I missed something?

Oh - btw - I love it that my Micro USB car adapter (different mobiles, different dedicated GPS navigational systems) has been working with any device I throw at it. But basically Apple's customers seem to be afraid of choice.

You've definitely missed something.

The dock connector features pins for more than just USB. Good luck getting analog video out of a USB port.

I think the aluminum back is better than glass and the shiny plastic on top and bottom match the front of the iPhone under an above the screen so it's like having a shiny band all around the iPhone on top and bottom NICE!!!

the whole front is shiny because of the glass panel not just the top and bottom.

started thinking about that, apple has no need to keep analog video through the dock... they have airplay now.

I agree that the extra features are less needed now, but you still lose something if you go to usb only. I guess we'll see what happens.

Whats with the back?

Over all the design looks pretty slick and I love the dark grey aluminum backing, but why doesn't it cover the whole back?? The two tone back just seems weird. For apple's sake I hope there is some bigger reason or purpose for that part of the design.

The two tones are ugly and I think the larger size is a step backwards. Talking to a few girls too, they hate that it could be longer, saying that the current one barely fits in their pockets when they have it there.

Is there anything the dock connecter can do that bluetooth and the wireless features cant?

Analog anything. It doesn't matter if the phone has bluetooth or AirPlay if it isn't supported on the other end...

I'm not here to debate the need for the dock connector anyway. I was just pointing out the other poster was wrong for suggesting the dock connector was just USB.

Nice use of the word syllogistic. Too bad you followed that with a pluralization of skill spelt with a z. But... no one is perfect.

i'm with ya, I'm just uneducated about what all the pros and cons are to the dock connecter is.

but with that said, I really don't see the dock connecter holding out. is there really a big market of people plugging analog devices into their phones?

Does the mini dock connector really gain them much in size savings? They're going for thinness after all, and my thin little nano has no trouble with the traditional connector.

I haven't looked at the specs, but it seems to me a thunderbolt type of connector (which requires it's own signals processor in the connector) would be of use for extra fast syncing. So, more than size it would be data rate advantage more than anything. Syncing is something that certainly can be improved upon.

Many car kits use the analog audio channels from the dock. Although with the headphone port on the bottom, these could be redesigned to use that. you also might have trouble plugging into a TV in a motel room without RCA cables.

Apple has long ago realized that the hardware specs of their upcoming iPhones will ALWAYS leak. They outsource the construction so it is inevitable.

Thus, the only real surprises on the new iPhones will be what the new iOS 6 will offer. This is kept in house and is much easier for them to prevent any leaks.

I expect that there will be NO amazing new hardware function. No inductive charging, no touch sensitive back cover, etc. Everything that we see is what is expected... better front camera, bigger display, better battery.

What Apple will do is try and "delight and amaze" us with iOS 6 features.....

i thought the iPhone headphone jack supported video out like the ipod video... guess that shows how little i used that feature

The great thing about Apple is, you can easily say "That's not Apple". I also think all these leaks are controlled and an impressive new design is in the store for us. Sir Ive is certainly way better than this :)

All these and Cook's recent statement about doubling down on secrecy makes me think like this.

Remember how sad Steve Jobs was when he wasn't the first one to show the new design of the iPhone, during the iPhone 4 keynote?

Although I don't dislike this design I'm going to have to agree with you. I think this may be a ploy.

Seems legit. If someone fabricated that, they did a ridiculously good job just to say they can. If it is true, I don't see many complaints at the size change. It's taller but thinner and possibly lighter. See a 4" or so screen won't be all the bad right? :)
