As i told in another thread. I'm pretty sure these backplates are a controlled leak. This surely is one of those old prototype 'next-gen' iPhones in an old body in order to disguise the real iPhone. It's already a known fact Apple made/makes a lot of different designs (new parts in old bodies, other way around) just to confuse people. What's with all the sudden prototype iPhones floating around? You think Apple would just let the real iPhone leaked out there?

If it was a prototype or one of many, why haven't there been more leaks of those? this is the only model that has been shown multiple times on the internet.

Two tone is nasty. Disgusting. Horrible. Hope that changes to the 4/4S style. Otherwise, i might actually use a case just to cover the ugly. Never used, or wanted to use a cover for an iPhone.. sad. :(

I really don't think Apple would put the headphone jack on the bottom. While, many wot care, it would be annoying for many people.

Facetime

Well, I don't want the earphone jack on the bottom of the phone!! That way you can't even put the phone on the table vertically and lean it against something when talking on Facetime!

Two thumbs down on this one, I hope it's not true. This is one thing I never liked about iPod Touch before...

Turn the iPhone sideways and have your conversation That way... kinda like HDTV. ;)

Back looks tacky.

Looks like we're getting a micro USB port instead of the Apple dock.

This might be the Euro Version.

Also, it's probably the model so 3rd-party manufacturers can make the cases and accessories and 'stuff' for the new iPhone and have them ready by the time the iPhone is ready.

OR... it's NOT an iPhone, but a Samsung klone-phone....

I don't think these are legit, surely Apple has the resources to make and distribute fakes to throw off media outlets. Besides this thing is ugly, and if you look at it how would you attach the screen to the unibody shell??

Totally not buying into this

Highly doubt it

This is a joke lol coming from china anything is possible to make over there, I own a machine shop and even I can easily make this junk.

Hmmmm. Possible.

Hey, you're right!

Hoax busted.

The different font may be an indicator.
Also, the way the narrator emphasized or stressed certain words sounded like he was being a jokester about the whole thing.

Or the difference in the font could be done by Apple to find out which 3rd party is leaking info. They can id the font as coming from such-and-such company. Much like the way dictionaries and telephone books would include harmless, erroneous information to identify plagiarists.

That's all great, but someone tell me why the back has two shiny stripes, while the rest is matte? Can't it all be matte, or polished? Apple doesn't generally use such design cues if they serve no purpose… The smooth all-glass back seemed more minimalistic than the half polished and half matte metal back…

Guys I think it's fake

It has seams. Apple would never design a product with seams

Haters will be first in line.

Look I'm not happy they went with 16x9 either but it's still Better than our old retinas

Micro USB doesn't support most of the pins that the current 30-pin dock connector does, such as audio line out, video out, etc. Sure, micro USB is great for charging and syncing, but lots of people use the direct line-out audio capabilities because the audio is cleaner than what goes through a pre-amp on it's way to the headphone jack. You'd lose functionality by going with USB.

What about HDMI?

Also, how does all of that work (audio out, video out, etc) on other phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S3? I am unclear about other phone connections.

"Is this new iPhone 5 part?? I don't know"

What's with this guy saying this?

Where did it come from then haha

Anodized finish

The finish appears anodized. I predict iPhone 5 in a variety of colors.

The small dock connector will make room for the best phone speaker on the market.

The real deal

This is obviously the real deal, if you take the time to think about the design constraints Apple is dealing with here.

There is the desire to make the device thinner - this is Apple design 101. The most obvious way to achieve this is to ditch the internal metal structural plate and the superfluous glass panel of the 4/4S and attach the internal components directly to the (stainless steel unibody) chassis of the phone.Just by doing that, you've replaced two components with one - reducing the thickness of the phone. The increased structural rigidity that comes from using a unibody chassis is also a plus.

That's all well and good, and it's clear that if Apple wasn't constrained by the realities of cellular radio reception, that all iPhones since the Gen 1 would have had all-metal backs along the lines of the iPad and iPod touch (again, Apple design 101). But the fact is, they are constrained by the need to provide adequate cellular reception, and this simply can't be achieved using an all-metal casing. Hence the top and bottom glass inserts.

Ive and his team are dealing with two conflicting design requirements, and the two-tone back is the result of this. In my opinion, the leaked part design is probably the most elegant way of dealing with this conflict - it looks good, and will look great when assembled and shot in a studio with proper lighting. Add to this the precise engineering/machining we see in the photos and it becomes obvious that this came from Apple and it's what the 6th-gen phone will look like, come announcement day.

It's just common sense.

OK, now I know it's a fake - the font used on the word 'iPhone" is not the same font... Look at the "e".

Apple's corporate typeface is Myriad, and that's what it is in both shots. The second one looks like it could possibly be a lighter version, that's all—like it's gone from bold to semi-bold perhaps.

If you compare the logos, there is a slight variation here as well—notice a bit more visible separation of the apple and leaf in the second shot. I wonder if this could be a consequence of a different manufacturing technique, where the image has been 'choked' a bit by the background. Or perhaps it's the iPhone 4 where the image has 'spread' slightly. I wouldn't be drawing too many conclusions about the legitimacy of the leaked part from this.

And on this "leak" the lettering is two different colors - a lighter gray and a darker gray. If this is legit it has to be an early prototype or a fake design.

The different shading would almost certainly be a result of reflections. Do you really think someone would produce such an elaborate fake, and accidentally colour the letters differently?

The most notable difference, which could suggest a prototype, is the missing small print ('Designed by Apple in California …', model number, etc). I'm sure it's already been discussed somewhere, but is there some kind of legal requirement for Apple to print this stuff on the case??

Those that say 'no way' often look dumb when it happens.

IF the hardware isn't going to be released until the Fall and there is nothing in iOS 6 that would leak the changes then yes you are probably correct.

But if there is something in the software that would leak the hardware then yes they will announce at least those bits to avoid having some developer do it before them.

Ok well then I'm 99.9999999% certain we won't get new Macs and a new iPhone at WWDC. I mean geez some here were saying they won't announce new Macs during the keynote because the keynote's supposed to be all about software. But now I'm to believe we'll get Mountain Lion, iOS 6, Apple TV, new Macs and a new iPhone all on Monday. No f'g way.

Not at all… It's an attempt at showmanship. :) Obviously he's seen the part before the camera started rolling. Now he's acting… trying to inject a bit of drama into the show, revealing bit by bit. Not a Steve Jobs standard presentation by any stretch, but hey, he gave it a go!

iPhone 4S[Long]?

No thank you.

Gonna need a dash of width thrown in there.

If Apple caves to the bullying of the (collapsing) EU, then the company is in trouble.

Micro USB is a terrible connector.
You get 10% of what the dock connector offers in terms of pin out compatibility.

So not only will it render your current adapters useless, but would also drive up the cost of new adapters.

Sorry, I should have said "similar" to the opposite of that connector. I don't think any of the rumours mentioned Micro USB. Also I don't think Apple would adopt it, given it is old tech. I would hope it is compatible with USB 3.0 and maybe Thunderbolt down the road (if it ever becomes even close to popular)

I think it looks sexy as hell. The back is much better in this video than it was in still pictures, and it will be even better in real life.

I'm digging the color change though. Gunmetal case is looking good. The two tone is going to take some getting used to. The 4g is not.

Count me in as someone else who kind of digs on the two-tone/texture of the back panel. Kind of reminds me an Audi R8 with the dark/flat (vs. glossy) section on the side, behind the door. :)

Thinner, [appears to be] room for a ~4” display, add LTE, [maybe] NFC, the improved camera tech, an incremental CPU/GPU improvement, I think that’s about all people should expect (and iOS6 of course :D )
