With the answer already in the very first post (and a few afterward).

I meant about the method to show battery stats in the app, not the actual app. I don't think it's immediately obvious when you first run the app. Well, it wasn't for me anyways... :p

I bought my iPhone 5 in november last year:

So this is bad, right?

Almost same as mine, bought Oct/Nov so warranty has expired. I have a Genius appointment booked for Saturday.

This comes to mind... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

my newest test for those that remember my initial post, I had 1000 mAh not too long ago...
I'm starting to wonder how accurate this software is or where its getting its values from or calculated from

in this day and age, if there isn't "an app for it" people are lost...

sorry bro!

While I do share similar sentiments, the battery info does take a little searching to find (especially if you've never used the tool before) and "more information" isn't very descriptive.

That's why instead of posting here and waiting for someone to respond I took the initiative to find it myself which turned out to be quicker than posting in the first place.

:D

My iPhone 5s. Looks like I'm the first in the thread that has more capacity than designed for :)!

This thread encouraged me to check my phone and it only has 911 mah capacity. What should I do? It's an iPhone 5 from October 27, 2012. It pisses me off that it fell so much in a year.
(277 cycles btw)

yours is probably out of factory warranty period... ~1 yr from purchase.
check with apple!

iPhone 5 refurb from June

CycleCount: 173

Looking okay so far

My charging habit:
- Charge it whenever convenient unless its above 50%, but try not to keep it at 100% for too long.
- Don't always charge it when I go to bed to avoid keeping it at 100% for too long.
- I find it ok to unplug above 80%
- I would top it up on the move with a mobile battery

Charging when the phone battery is not zero is ideal. You don't want to go to 1% or zero more than every few months. And when you do, let it charge to 100% and then some. That is how the battery meter is calibrated.

But there should be no worry leaving it at 100% overnight. The Apple charging circuit prevents overcharging. I found that on the Apple web site somewhere.

Here is my iPhone 5, a refurb model from a few months ago. I leave it on 100% overnight, but rarely let it go below 30%.

So if this app is valid, I'm at 96%

Some useful Apple links:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/

A charge cycle means using all of the battery’s power, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge. For instance, you could listen to your iPod for a few hours one day, using half its power, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two, so you may take several days to complete a cycle. Each time you complete a charge cycle, it diminishes battery capacity slightly, but you can put notebook, iPod, and iPhone batteries through many charge cycles before they will only hold 80% of original battery capacity.

Standard Charging
Most lithium-ion polymer batteries use a fast charge to charge your device to 80% battery capacity, then switch to trickle charging. That’s about two hours of charge time to power an iPod to 80% capacity, then another two hours to fully charge it, if you are not using the iPod while charging. You can charge all lithium-ion batteries a large but finite number of times, as defined by charge cycle.

http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

Charge Cycles
A properly maintained iPhone battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs.

Cases and Charging
Charging your iPhone while in certain carrying cases may generate excess heat, which can affect battery capacity. If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when you charge it, take it out of its case first.

got my new battery today with only 3 days left until my warranty expires!!!
took less than 5 minutes to do the assesment and less than 45 minutes to do the replacement. just enough time for me to walk to the food court for some teriyaki chicken!
for those interested apple tested my battery at below 40% or in the "red" zone.
there is a neat little graph their software uses and it places a dot on it in reference to the health and age of the battery. so given degradation vs age mine was analyzed as FAILED.

Repair Estimate
Item Number Description Price Amount Due
661-6856 Battery Kit, iPhone 5 $ 79.00 $ 0.00
Total (Tax not included) $ 79.00 $ 0.00

Did you had to wait in the Store until your iPhone battery drop below 40% ?

Thanks for that report. Gives more confidence in the battery app, and it's usefulness.

Li-ion batteries lose permanent capacity with cycles...and also just sitting around on the shelf

It really does not matter what this software reports your battery as because Apple has their own test which they determine of it is defective or not. There will be some degradation after one year.

Absolutely not.
First of all, the indication may not be so accurate, then batteries may be slightly different one to each other.
You have another 11 months of warranty ....

Actually is a very correct and not unexpected report.
New batteries need a little time to calibrate.

The capacity was in the red square in their diagnostics software and even though I was out of warranty by 10 days they replaced the battery.
