Can they diagnose your battery over the phone if you call AppleCare or do you have to go in to the store?

Had this replaced in March, so it's only about 9 months old:

Cycle count: 345
Design Capacity: 1430
Full Charge Capacity 998
Status: Success

Looks pretty poor if I'm honest, and admittedly my battery isn't the best in real usage as well. Oh well.

Under 1000 mAh in 9 months and it is the second battery of your iPhone 5 ?
You are very unlucky or something is wrong in your habit ....

Gosh there sure is a lot of bad advice and overly dramatic posts in this thread.

Could you explain something ?

There isn't any magical diagnose tool .... they need to connect your phone to check it.

How are people checking their batteries. I downloaded the app, but not sure what to do next.

EDIT: Never mind, got it.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. Phone was replaced in March, but it did have a new battery. So yeah, <1000 mAh in under 9 months.

You reckon that's defective? I just thought the battery life on the iP5 was a bit crap!

I think it is defective. Bring your phone to an Apple Store and have it checked.

According with your results is almost perfect.

Taking it in this Thursday for a lock button issue, so may as well ask about it then. Out of warranty but hopefully should be able to do something under EU Consumer rights/SOGA.

Good luck with that !

Usually batteries aren't covered for the second year, but who knows ....

I got my iPhone 5 in March of this year:

CycleCount: 144
DesignCapacity: 1430
FullChargeCapacity: 1388
Status: Success
BatteryCurrentCapacity: 100
BatteryIsCharging: true
ExternalChargeCapable: true
ExternalConnected: true
FullyCharged: false
GasGaugeCapability: true

I'm happy with my battery although recently it's been draining faster thanks to IFTTT running in the background all of the time. Great little app.

144 cycles in over 8 months aren't so many .... Your battery is almost perfect, but you don't use it so much :D

Why? Is that really bad? Sorry. I dont really understand the figures shown there. :( can u explain it to me?
Just using pure numbers, the phone has a battery that can hold 1430, while yours can only fit 1044 (so yours is about 400 short of what would be full, which means it only has less than 3/4 of its capacity).

It's quite easy ... 1430 is the 100% of your original battery capacity.
Your can reach 1044 after a full charge, which is about 73% of original capacity.
Btw you are approaching 500 cycles and those batteries are usually designed to last 5-600 cycles, so it's quite normal.
There are lucky people with batteries that last for 1000 cycles over 80% of original capacity, but they are an exception ...

Thank you for the response do you think my iphone can still hold up until I buy the next gen iphone? Which probably is september 2014? I'm deeply sad to find out that this is the state of my present iphone. :(

Hard to say, but it will probably hold up, just with less and less available battery. Given where it is now, and the fact that you should still be covered by the 1-year warranty from Apple (for another month or so it would seem), it might be worth taking it to an Apple store (if that's an option) and having them take a look at it to see if there's anything potentially wrong with it and perhaps fix it/replace it if needed (under warranty).
