I got the same email! I preordered and was given an appointment time. Hopefully this is not the case and I can get this cleared up in the morning.

Give it a rest. Why is Best Buy to blame for not having adequate inventory shipped from APPLE?

Well one would think that, but look at my situation. I was the first in line to preorder at my store, ordered a 16GB white AT&T one, and the the store was not sent a single white one at all. At least one could reason that each store would at least get a couple of white ones. Especially seeing other forum members here and elsewhere that their stores got appointments for white ones at their stores.

Are the emails being mainly sent to the West Coast customers? That's what it seems like from some on here and a few on the Best Buy forum site. It's almost 1 am here and I haven't received that email, nor have I received a phone call or email yet saying my phone will be there for pick up tomorrow (today). I'm hoping I don't receive the dreaded e-mail and that there's a chance that my phone is there tomorrow or at least arrives tomorrow sometime during the day.

I just checked the order # on the first email I got the day I pre ordered. The out of stock email I just got has a different order #... wtf? Is it like that for anyone else? I'm going to call them in the morning.

Your situation is irrelevant. Best Buy doesn't decide which units go which stores, Apple does. If you really feel like you need to get mad at someone, blame Apple for its supply chain failures.

So BB didn't get enough inventory to fulfill all of its preorders. You think they somehow engineered this situation on purpose? And remember - it's just a stupid phone. You're not going to die if you don't get yours on release day. Believe it or not, there are more and better things to stress about.

This kind of BS happens every year. Just because a new model iPhone comes out, the maturity of the posters here drops to the level of third graders.

Actually I noticed that too, my order numbers don't match my emails from pre order day

You know, your right. In the end it's nothing to stress over and I will get a phone "eventually" that being a matter of when over if. I have been behaving like a third grader and for that I do apoligiize.

However I believe that the elephant in the room here is the fact that BB did not recieve enough stock, obviously a decision made by Apple themselves. I guess instead of calling it preorders, BB needs to refer to them as reservations in the future, as stock can NEVER (not shouting, just emphasizing) be garuenteed.

Does it matter?

A "preorder" is defined as an order that is made before the item you're buying is made available for sale. Nobody guaranteed that you will receive what you preordered on release day. In fact, Best Buy's even had that disclaimer on their website stating as such.

Just spoke with best buy mobile, they told me pre-orders will be fulfilled first. There will be no walk in purchases unless that stock wasn't already pre-ordered. My 64gb VZW wasn't there today...

I got the same email and just checked and my receipt from the store has a different order number than the one I received in the email. I also called the store last night and they confirmed I was in the top 25 and guaranteed to pick up my phone today. Not sure, but I will have to call when they open to make sure they have my white iPhone.

I knew I wasnt going to get mine last night. I pre ordered from the Best Buy in Alpharetta GA. Went to the ATT store at 5am this morning and was 11th in line. By 8 there was maybe 40 people. My wife and I got our phones and the store had over 100 in stock. Never going with Best Buy again.

In comparison the Apple Store at the mall had over 500 people in line. ATT was the way to go for me this year!

People are saying its not Brst Buys fault, yet every time something like the iPhone is released Best Buy does this. They sell preorders they know they can't fulfill. At least not right away. They intentionally do it, they figure if they get some of your money now you are more likely to wait and buy from them since you missed your chance to get one on release day anyway.

Do you have any proof of this, or are you just pulling this BS out of your *ss?

Every time a new iPhone is released, Best Buy has NO idea how many units each store is going to receive from Apple until they actually receive them. Apple controls the supply chain to third parties. So tell us again why this is some Best Buy conspiracy?

Under promise, over deliver. Thats how it should be. Best Buy over promises and under delivers. Thats why people get upset.

Because they have employees who tell people they will get one. I know not every employee does that, but the company is definitely NOT on the same page. I wasnt counting on mine getting fulfilled today, it was my back up.

i got the same (sorry, no iPhone for you) email late last night from Best Buy.
pre-order was for a black 64GB, that might have been the reason, i think very few 64GB iPhones made it to the retailers.

but...
at a little after 9am i walked into a local AT&T and picked up a white 64GB on the spot. no line, though there were a few people there. they had opened at 8. :D

now, to return this $50 Best Buy gift card...
i read the fine print and as far as i can tell, i should be able to return it.

To be fair, my store (Bay Shore, NY) did call them reservations. I'm still reserved to get a 16GB Black VZW model before any walk-in. The matter still stands that it's iPhone day and I'm on a Nexus. Sad panda.

How did Best Buy overpromise anything? And it's Apple that's under delivering, not Best Buy.

You are proving my point.

Best Buy has NO idea how many units each store is going to receive from Apple.

Don't sell what you dont have. They know from history that they won't get many units on launch day, yet they will gladly take people's money wether they have sold 10 or 1000 preorders. They know they can't fulfill them right away, they know people don't want to wait, yet thy sell as many as they can anyway.

I pre-ordered my 64GB (which actually was the first pre-order at the store) and my co-worker pre-ordered the 32GB right after me, we both got a call about the phone...

However, while he got his, there's no 64GB at all that have been received -_-

Normally I pre-order through Apple, kind of regretting it this time... especially because they don't know when/if they are going to get any 64GB in today (multiple drops during the day apparently) and it may take "a month or two if we don't get any in by this weekend".

Grrr...

Just out of curiosity what city is your Best Buy in? I know not all Best Buy's were doing appointments.

Hi! Sorry, I didn't see this until just now. My Best Buy is in Southern Pines, NC. I got there early and they went ahead and processed me, so now I have this delicious black and slate baby in my hands. w00t!

Anyway, one fellow walked in hoping to buy one, who had not pre-ordered. Best Buy got zero shipment of extra iPhones -- only the pre-orders, and they said they didn't even get enough to fulfill all of those. Just an update.

All they can sell you is a place in line (which you can give back to them for a full refund). I'm sorry if your BB wasn't up front about you about this, but mine was. The manager "expected" but "couldn't guarantee" my phones would be available on launch day. And lo and behold, 50% of my phones are available.

Personally I find this preferable to standing in line at Apple for 14 hours without a preorder (like I did for the iPhone 4), or setting an alarm for 3am so I can buy a phone and have it shipped to my doorstep today.

The unfortunate truth is that with a launch this big, and with demand far exceeding supply (which is already ridiculously large), you have two choices:
- Have patience, and get your model when your number is called
- Explore many alternatives, most of which are rather unpleasant, to procure a phone today

You need to be extremely lucky to put in the minimum effort and get a launch day phone with no fuss. I consider it a minor miracle that I even got one of my phones, given that I placed my order at around 2:30pm on Friday.
