I called Apple today to ask if I could exchange a black 5 for a white in store even though I had ordered online. Two different reps said yes. I then called my local apple store and got the same answer. I realize it states it in the return policy but heard same thing from three different reps.

Apple has a 30-day return policy on iphones for whatever reason.

That's not much to go on, but I think that MG Siegler actually responded to the Pocket Lint review and said his black one is not doing that. I really have to wonder if Pocket Lint abused that phone a little bit just to see if it would hold up to the beating. They really didn't explain if this just happened or if they dropped the phone or what.

Something tells me PocketLint came up with the idea to create controversy and drive visits to their site. I highly doubt that the black color simply "rubs" off.

Y'know, I've never understood this obsession with portable devices (apple or not) showing scuffs, scrapes etc. Maybe it's just me but these are, after all, portable devices. They're going to be dragged around in pockets, used in all weather conditions, probably dropped a few times... seems natural that they're going to amass battle scars over time.

Either way I've got a black iPhone 5 on the way and don't regret that decision at all. It looks great now and it'll look great in two years regardless of a few scratches and scrapes picked up along the way.

I agree--if that were the case, you wouldn't be seeing so many rave reviews about the hardware.

I'm a massive idiot then, because I don't use any kind of always-on protection. Just the raw, bare iPhone. The 4(S) feels so good in the hand, and looks so good, it's a real shame cover it up with protection that's useless once in the hand. It does need to be protected when not in use though (like when stuffed in pockets).

Hey man. We're massive idiots for not wanting to compromise Apple's perfect design. Massive idiots who will look way cooler than the 98% of (true) massive idiots. I don't get it? Why buy an iPhone 5 if not for the design aesthetic?

I feel like the people here who are saying it scuffs & scratches and I am changing my order to a white one are just Chicken littles in a panic

The difference is there is evidence. It's not theoretical at this point that the iPhone's aluminum is chipping. There are pictures, videos and even older photos of other black aluminum devices that chip.

Some people don't care that it chips which is fantastic for them. Personally I'd rather just deal with the problem now than to see if the problem will rear it's head. Especially since I'm already a white iPhone user.

Calling this a "gate" thing is plain silly too. It's not a life of death deal, "things" wear over time, EVERYTHING does. This just a highly probable scenario a person can avoid now before it happens and save themselves drama from having to complain and whine about it later. But saying "nah Apple wouldn't let this happen", is like your head in the dirt, ignoring the problem and telling everyone that "everything is ok, don't be stupid."

No, out of the 20-odd or so that are in the hands of reviewers, two have already been found to scuff a lot. I do find that worrisome.

The other millions are still boxed up nicely right now so that doesn't say much about them being prone to this problem.

Personally, I'm now leaning towards getting the white one and perhaps in the future when spare parts become cheap to replace the front panel with a black one. Sounds like the ideal combination.
"Scuff a lot" ... One reviewer is on a no name site and has no credibility, the other barely mentioned anything about the issue. Have fun with the ugly iPhone 5 cause you're scared. Just makes us black iPhone 5 owners look that much more unique/badass.

Prove it.

I'd agree that it won't rub off from just taking it out of your pocket and such, but i do think it will from simple things like lifting it off a table. that edge will hit if not lifting straight up from the sides, and simple textured surfaces like that will wear the coating.

a case should solve the issue, but i just tested a casemate slim case with my 4s and the edge of the band will still hit on the bottom with that one..need a tiny bit more protection

I didn't get Applecare+ when I ordered, could I go into an Apple store today and buy it, its been purchased but hasn't arrive so clearly no defects. Anybody know the best way to add it?

I just put another call into Apple store about the exchange. He suggested I not come in on release day. Doing this would result in me having to wait in a line. He informed me I have 30 days to exchange. He said they dont care if I use it or not, so I plan to open it and see how it holds up for 15 days or so, then get into a store for the exchange.

It always is funny how people brag about how thin a product is and then cover it with a case.

As for not scratching easy... based on Apples track record then you wont last an hour without a mystery scuff mark. :D

To be accurate, you mean "based on anodizing on consumer electronics".

Yikes. If it gets scuffed up and looks that horrible after only a few days of use, imagine how it is going to look after 6 months.

hahaha, AT&T hasn't done me wrong actually. There is so much hate on here for them its quite surprising since I've had nothing but a good experience with them.

As far as getting the largest device. I have a lot of music and movies.

a lot of movies? email me some porn please

Thank you for doing the leg work on this! I was worried about dealing with the Apple store tomorrow for an exchange, so I will just try later this week.

I don't understand why you are all so quick to exchange your iPhones when you haven't even given them a chance. You're really gonna trust some website no one's ever heard about for that sort of thing?

I regularly read both websites. What I don't understand is why people on this forum are so quick to discredit the reviews that were otherwise glowing for the iPhone 5. If anything, they did a thorough job and critiqued the phone where they saw fit to do so. We, as consumers, should appreciate their scrutiny. Instead, people on this forum are quick to accuse each website of being a "nobody" or "out to get website hits."

The black anodised HTC my wife is borrowing until tomorrow... Glad we went for white.
