Since the 3G I've also gone black...except for the 4S...now with the 5 I was thinking "wow, I really want to go back to the black, it just looks so sexy!"...after seeing these potential problems, I'll have to stick with the white again! Oh well.

I can't find a word about this topic in slash gears review:

From the SlashGear iPhone 5 review.

"Apple offers two color options, “white & silver” and “black & slate”; each uses the same mixture of glass and metal, and has color-matched beading between the antenna strips running around the outer-edge of the phone. They’re finished with a beautiful chamfered edge, which Apple says is diamond-cut; it’s unfortunately reasonably prone to scrapes, however, and after just a few days of relatively kid-glove treatment, this black review model bore at least one small scar. It would likely be less obvious with a white version."

I feel like the people here who are saying "you people are wrong Apple wouldn't make a product that scratches" are just hopefuls in denial. Sadly I think the black aluminum WILL scratch. One guy said 2 out of millions... actually it's more like 2 out of dozens as only dozens of people have had the iPhone 5 to test out.

I'm switching to the white model so I don't have to worry about it. And yes the black model is sexier but I'm also one of those who dumps his phone once a year for new one so I like to keep my stuff nice and shiny. Even my white model will be getting a leather textured skin on the sides and back. Not just for protection but I like the look and want to avoid the scratches.

I feel like the people here who are saying it scuffs & scratches and I am changing my order to a white one are just Chicken littles in a panic

Photoshop job you can tell.

I honestly believe I've seen this photo before as a leak pre iPhone 5 release. Looks exactly like pictures of the renders on the table (note the table in the background as well.)

although saying that reders of a phone is easy compared to people fingers (nails clipped I note) LOL

i'm 50/50 on this

White FTW

I'm a massive idiot then, because I don't use any kind of always-on protection. Just the raw, bare iPhone. The 4(S) feels so good in the hand, and looks so good, it's a real shame cover it up with protection that's useless once in the hand. It does need to be protected when not in use though (like when stuffed in pockets).

I simply use a sleeve (a ColcaSac). It's the best compromise. I've been using my 4 and then 4S like this for almost two years, not the slightess scratch, ding or anything on any of them.

I definitely agree. The bare phone feels much better than any case. Especially since the iPhone 5 is so thin and light, I'm very tempted to buy AppleCare and just use my 5 naked. I ordered an IS HD and a Feather just in case tho.

i'm pretty certain this will end up being much ado about nothing. black/slate looks awesome and i am sure apple engineered the device in such a way that it will resist scuffs, peeling, whatever you want to call it. they over-engineer everything and i am certain they spent ample time figuring out the best method for coating the phone if they went to the trouble to consider a new color. i still don't see how these people could have a phone for a couple of days and incur this kind of damage. doesn't make much sense.

Not worried about this now. I've got a case (or two).

I like using phones without cases sometimes. I would like to use the iphone like this but it's simply not an option. I hand my phone down to my wife so I have to keep it in top shape because it's going to get 2 full years of service.

The upside is I will get to have a new phone every year (passing the old one down to my less-caring wife).

So for me it's a tradeoff. One that forces this to be a non-issuse as a case will certainly protect against this.

Wait, that's me!!! :) Doing the same thing going forward. We have awesome wives! :D

I actually have a conversation going on Twitter right now with Jim Dalrymple--he hasn't seen this on his review unit, but he has the white one. MG Siegler also hasn't seen it and I think his is the Slate colored model.

I'm going to not worry about this until I get mine.

Would you post a link please? I'd be interested to see if other people pitch in. Thanks!

1 - Its a phone. Its not indestructible. I don't think I've owned any product/object/physical item that stays pristine since day one. Especially if you carry it around everywhere you go. The iPhone 5 isn't special. It doesn't have some sort of force field. Apple cannot defy science...

No, but Apple can use a tougher grade of anodizing. The concern is whether the anodizing is too thin, and therefore will rub off easily.

I'm a little nervous about releasing my Twitter handle on MacRumors. But here is our conversation:

Me: Does your review iPhone 5 have "scuffs" as mentioned in Pocket Lint's review? What's the deal with that?

Jim: Scuffs?

Me: Supposedly their slate colored review unit had the black wearing off on some of the edges. Have you seen that?

Jim: I have a white one, but haven’t seen anything like that.

Me: I think @parislemon has the slate color and hasn't seen it either. I'm sure the media will be calling it scuff gate soon.

Jim: Indeed

That's not much to go on, but I think that MG Siegler actually responded to the Pocket Lint review and said his black one is not doing that. I really have to wonder if Pocket Lint abused that phone a little bit just to see if it would hold up to the beating. They really didn't explain if this just happened or if they dropped the phone or what.

Well, we'll all find out tomorrow. I mean i'm SURE that somebody's phone will get a scratch on it the first day and it's gonna be Apple's fault. lol
