So you can swap phones if you scratch it?

Unless this rises to the level of "defect" (hint: it won't), then no. Apple Care + does not cover scratches unless you're willing to pony up one of your 2 replacements w/$50 deductible.

or an android fanboy would have fun with that.

Phone's not even out yet relax. If there are any issues Apple will fix it. They always do. Unlike Asus for android that basically removes the gps spec from their website and says "well that fixed the gps problem". For wifi issue they just say "oh well that's just part of the design".

Yeah, a company that is in such good standing with Apple that they receive a trial device for review prior to the launch is going to photoshop damage to the device.

What would the point of that be?

Scuffs or scratches?

Scuffs would indicate a poor painting job - a scratch is you scratching it. The difference is defective device vs intent to cause damage.

So you can swap phones if you scratch it?

im so tired of [insert "problem"] gate.
new device, new "gate". people stope saying gate. gate gate gate

Don't worry too much

I work in an industry that I deal with aluminum every day. I'm not sure whether the aluminum is anodized or painted, but both are extremely robust. You can scratch anodized(painted for that matter as well), but it would take at least 10 years for the anodized finish to start to wear or flake. The standard paint used for aluminum is Kynar based, and that would take a minimum of 15-20 years to start to wear or flake. Again, they are not scratch resistant, but under normal circumstances, you would not have to worry about the finish on the aluminum for the life of the phone.

Has anyone seen a clear coating available for purchase that goes around the side of the phone?

Now with just anodizing the alum then only a certain depth of the alum is colored black just a question as how deep it is and how easily it wears away..

so you saying a good anodized metal would be pretty hard to wear off then.. that makes feel better..

Anodizing is half penetrating/half build-up. About .005" (.127 mm) each way for a quality job. Any more and it gets brittle, any less and it wears early.

You'd think that a company so concerned with aesthetics would follow the high-end watch industry and use a PVD or DLC coating instead. After all, they're already using sapphire glass for the camera lens.

I've noticed this too--overuse of the "gate" reference in pop culture.

I call it "GateGate."

Anyone have a copy of this picture? Getting a HTTP error now.

It came back a few minutes ago, now it is gone. Maybe the hosting back end is getting slammed by hits. HAHA! This no name site [macrumors] is sullying Apple's great name!!!

This reminds of the OG iPod Nano...storm is brewing. At least one model is safe this time.

yeah i really hope that this is just a one off with this phone and not all phones. Honestly the pics dont look bad though to me? maybe my vision is bad.

i bought applecare+ so i could care less.

This is a total idiotic way of thinking.

This problem should not be here in the first place.

1. You are paying a company more money for a defective product.

2. My time valuable, i shouldn't have to worry about going through the time and hassle of a replacement process - potentially ending up with a phone that has other issues.
