Durability may mean the phone is harder to break, not less likely to scratch.

I hate to pull this card, but...

Durability: able to exist for a long time without significant deterioration; also : designed to be durable <durable goods>

We could debate the definition of significant next, but I'll show you my hand. This type of deterioration (as pictured) is significant to me given the short period of time that was necessary to cause the deterioration.

We might not need to agree, but this seems to fall within the scope of durability.

I can see this becoming a problem for much of us. I'm getting the black but I'm having second thoughts on it. I'm going to a white 4s to the black 5. I hope I don't regret this decision. I'd like to see a bit more proof before I change my mind 100%

or an android fanboy would have fun with that.

Phone's not even out yet relax. If there are any issues Apple will fix it. They always do. Unlike Asus for android that basically removes the gps spec from their website and says "well that fixed the gps problem". For wifi issue they just say "oh well that's just part of the design".

You want to tell the full story next time on the GPS, not just the bits that serve your denial of this scratching issue. Asus provided external GPS dongles to all who bought the tablet to alleviate the issue. Because of the poor GPS performance they removed it from the specifications which was the right thing to do, they stopped advertising the function due to the issues with it.

The wifi issue is a flaw in the design so it does still suffer from poor performance (although functional), the iPhone 4 antenna also has a small flaw in the design, but still perfectly functional.

Don't know if anybody has seen this, but here's a screenshot from Engadget's video review. Not looking too good....

That's the phone of someone who is careless with their stuff. It looks like someone spit all over the back of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the iPhones put together by hand in the factories? All those hands and fingers on the device, and if it really is "rubbing' off, wouldn't they come out of the box scuffed up? Everyone just needs to reserve judgement until you get your own.

If you ordered from Apple you have 30 days to test drive it yourself. That will be the best proof. By then we'll know more...

What's more likely:

1) Apple jacked up the manufacturing on the black model and the finish easily wears off at the edge from rubbing and/or normal use. Or, even just highly susceptible to being scratched.

2) Reviewers and users are opening their new iPhones and immediately stuffing into pockets loaded with keys and nails. Then, posting negative reviews that the finish wears off after normal use.

3) They're just "holding it wrong" . . . again. And/or some people just have sweatier and more acidic hands.

Touche, you got me.

All I am saying is, wait till you have it and this happens. Then start freaking out. Or, avoid the whole situation and protect your investment with an invisashield. That's how I justified my invisashield purchase. If I spent $300 on the phone, I may as well spend another $30 protecting it.

This could be very ugly if true, or a cruel joke (conspiracy) - for whatever reason to get some peeps to cancel their black unit orders.

If this happens on pretty much every black phone, chances are there will be a recall (and they'll fix the process). Though, it could be an expensive recall for Apple.

umm no they will not issue a recall.. they will probably give everyone a free bumper..
see ipod nano lawsuit.. think they gave everyone 25 bucks

See you back here tomorrow.

This isn't an issue for me. I just hate seeing people get wound up over this. If mine scuffs or scratches then so be it. I don't let the look of a phone impact my life at such a huge level as some people are. As long as the phone still operates and performs the functions I need it to then I could care less about a few tiny scratches.

Not much we can do now if this is a problem. Sure you can return it for a white one, but if you exchange for a black one, and this issue is widespread, you will have the same problem. People are getting all upset because they might not get their phone on the 21st. Could you imagine all the whining if Apple stopped shipping future phones until the issue was resolved? There is no fix for this issue, if it does exist. Millions of black phones have been made. Millions of more shells waiting to be assembled.

Its more to do with quality expectations with an Apple product. Sure some are OCDing. But when a 700-900$ phone starts showing scratches in 20 minutes of use, you cannot blame people for being a bit concerned and wanting to investigate further. Folks dont expect that from an apple product.

I just got into an argument with apple store lady manager over my exchange. This is just BS!!!

Now, if over time, just the chamfered edge goes completely silver, it could actually look pretty cool. Just sayin...
