Getting my pre-order from my carrier tomorrow. They offer a 7 day exchange provided it's not open - so really need to decide if I want to go for a while phone instead.

Not good!!

If I get my phone delivered from Verizon tomorrow can I take it to Verizon or Apple Store and swap for a white? I wonder what their policy is?

If you bought it from Verizon, you have to deal with them. That's why I always buy from Apple. No hassles. 30 day return policy, no questions.

Definitely go with a while phone. While phones rule.

I'm still not going to change to white. The setbacks of a white iPhone outweigh the scuffing. The black border around the screen is simply not workable for me at all.

Hmm... Looks like "Scuff Gate" hasn't been really nice to the phone.

I suspect he dropped it.. There's no way the black will wear in normal use. Apple is very experienced in anoziding aluminium.

Also look at this photo.. On the right side.. Looks like scratches from a drop or something??

Image

looks like dust, not scratches.

Really? People are going to switch out their black iphones for white iphones? Why not just get an invisashield and enjoy the iphone color you originally selected? My invisashield is ordered, my silicon case is ordered, and my BLACK iPhone 5 will be in my hands on Oct 5th

Really? The finish should not rub off like that from normal use. I would return it in a heartbeat this is the case.

Sticking with the car analogy, would you just put an invisashield shield on your car if the paint was rubbing off with normal use??

I highly doubt it's "rubbing off" it's getting scratched off by things hitting it. Show me one piece of evidence that shows someone just rubbing the finish and it coming off on their hands. If that's the case, then you're right. But using your own analogy against you, my car has been scratched up by normal use, I didn't run back to the dealer and cry about it. My iPhone 4 is scratched up too, it's from not having protection on it and having it in a pocket with keys/coins/other objects that scratch. Even the underside of my Macbook Pro has scratches that have discolored, I didn't run to the Apple store and ask for a replacement. It's bound to happen, just cover it up and be careful.

Now if you showed me proof that it just "rubs off" then I wouldn't want the phone either, but I have yet to see any reports of the color "rubbing off."

I'm normally not one who complains and is nit-picking, but with this I'd go for a "no-compromise"-stance. The anodized layer seems to come off during normal use and that is simply not acceptable at all. Especially when you shelf out 899 Euro (here in Europe) for the unlocked 64 GB version.

By all means, if you find it acceptable to experience damage to the device from light usage on the first day due to it being picked up and set down, then more power to you. Rubbed off or scratched is really just a matter of semantics. The design is decidedly not durable.

Well, fortunately I ordered from Apple. And if more proof of this supposed gate surfaces, I'll have recourse for up to 30 days.

We have only one or 2 pics of ppl claiming it's normal use. Hardly proof yet.

I can't believe people are defending the fact that the finish comes of this phone in 20 minutes without rough treatment. sliding a phone 3 inches across a glass surface has never damaged a phone of mine before..

if the phone was being dragged across a coarse surface, i could see you taking this stance, but c'mon, this is a very short period with basic use.

Looking at that picture, it appears the finish is rubbing off right at the edge where the new "chamfered" bezel meets the anodized band. The rest of the phone is in perfect condition.

If it is a scratch, I agree. But, it would be one hell of an isolated scratch that only clipped the edge and missed every other surface nearby.

I have to agree. Apple is big enough to endure this, but it will be a mini-scandal, and Apple will replace a lot of phones over it.

Don't know if anybody has seen this, but here's a screenshot from Engadget's video review. Not looking too good....

Again, I doubt picking it up and putting it down made what happened in the picture happen. It was probably in his pocket, got banged up my something else in his pocket, and then it scratched. This happens to all metals. I don't know how no one remembers the same thing happening with the iPhone 4/4S or the chrome backs of the damn iPods that have been around for the past decade. My iPod Classic has a piece of plastic covering the back for this same reason. How this is new to any Apple fan is beyond me. And "Durability" is all up for debate. Durability may mean the phone is harder to break, not less likely to scratch.
