Think I'll drop by apple this weekend to look at the display models to see if any of the black phones are scuffed up after continous handling by everyone.

Its more to do with quality expectations with an Apple product. Sure some are OCDing. But when a 700-900$ phone starts showing scratches in 20 minutes of use, you cannot blame people for being a bit concerned and wanting to investigate further. Folks dont expect that from an apple product.

I understand that. But what can you do? Sure, you can get your money back. Sure, you can exchange for a white one or another black one. If this problem is widespread, then the only viable options are a white one, which many people do not want, or not owning an iphone 5 at all. Apple will not exchange millions of black phone or admit to the problem simply because of the PR nightmare that would ensue.

This settles it.

If the black iPhone 5 is easily scratched then I'll return it and simply stick with my black 4s

Boggles my mind that black glass would be more scratch resistant then their newest flagship phone

I just did that with what was available. I checked out the ipod minis/ipod nanos that are also anodized aluminum. For the most part they looked okay with not any significant visible scratches and these things are beat up by everyone. I'm sure apple uses a similar process to anodize the aluminum on the iphone 5. I think im sticking with the black.. checked out the white 4s while i was in the store.. white just doesnt look as high tech/sleek and professional. Looks more like a toy.

"Scuff Gate"?? Really? Another, so-called ":apple:-gate?

The only Applegate I care about is Christina.

I see both sides on this one. Specifically preordered mine so I would not have to take my happy ace down to the Apple store on launch. I will reluctantly be going down to Apple tomorrow and picking up a white as well. Will throw a sim in both and drive them for a week.

Would be slick to have the white phone casing with black glass.

Well, Im staying with my white 4S. I ordered a black one for my GF (she really liked the looks of both black and white) but she wants the white one now, after seeing these pics of scratching/scuffing. So, it'll probably sit in the box unopened for a few weeks until we can get it exchanged for a white one.

What makes anyone think an invisible shield will solve the scratching???

First things first, the scratching, if it matters to you, occurs on the EDGES. Not the sides. The invisible shield "MAXIMUM" coverage for example, only covers the front, back, and sides, it doesn't envelop the entire device in a coccoon of plastic...

The "chamfered" (sp?) edges are the issue (if you really want to call it an issue). They polish em up real good, and in the process take off 99% of the anodizing (maybe not 99%, but that's my estimate).

Then, we get it, and it wears a little. BAM. Silver shows through.

It's no biggie. Seriously. It's BEYOND first world problems in my opinion, but I get that some people are so OCD that if they comb their hair wrong they need to take the day off work, and hey, it's a free country...

Just don't think "shielding" or "ghost armoring" is solving anything.

I'd bet even a case will wear the edges.

On the plus side, I will be the only one rocking a black iPhone 5. It solves my annoyance that everyone has a phone like me now ;)

You guys should all go read the comments after the review. Several people ask how those marks appeared--from normal use or from some kind of stress testing? While the mod answers a lot of their OTHER questions, he keeps dodging the question of how the scuffs got there. I think I call BS on these guys.

If I were getting the black I'd be pissed. Not only is it gonna scuff like a cheap patio set, then you also gotta put up with the craptastic maps they invested in. It's gonna look like crap and not be able to find its way out of a paper bag.

Guess I'll cover the edges in scotch tape then. Of course under the case I'll put on it, It'll look like crap otherwise

they should of powder coated the black iPhone. would be much more durable than this.

I'll reserve judgement until I see for myself. Honestly, if the chamfered part turns silver it'll look really good.

The review sites with scuffed iPhones should make a video demonstrating how easy it is to scuff the phone. I'm really thinking they just started this whole thing to get page views. It's strange they only upload one photo, and stop responding to requests for more.

I don't know about the hits (It would not surprise me in the slightest, they are all pulling stunts like this) but the iphones I have seen with the scuff marks all seem to be demo models.

We need to see a few , not 1 not 2 , but a few brand spanking new iphones being used and handled for 30 mins and then inspected.

No way of knowing who has been handling the iphones we have seen in the images.

This will likely be the first thing they address and improve in the iPhone 5s.. Can't wait till next years announcement!

I was going to wait until next years iphone, but I got impatient.

I cannot wait until next year. I must admit I do not like the two tone back to the iphone 5 , it just looks like an old tired design.

I hope they update the design next year into something fresh and less fragile.

I guess we'll find out tomorrow. I'm going to go to the store early. Have been trying to decide between black and white, but I think black is the way to go for me. If this scuffing thing turns out to be real, might get it exchanged for the white.

This is the first year I have not preordered... Wasn't blown away by this years phone enough to give apple another 400.00. I'll wait till the 5z rumors start circulating which should start the day after the 5 comes out!
