Head to an apple store. I waited about a half hour in line to exchange my black one. I didn't even open it. I held the black one in the store and it is indeed sexier, but I can't deal with te flaking issue crap.

Half hour wait?

Looked at my phone and boom noticed a scratch. Don't know how it happened! Been in my pocket and my hands only. AFAIK, no abrasives in my pocket lol!!

Out the box, a very slight scuff mark on the top left corner of the antenna near the notch. Other than that, flawless.

I'ma keep it unless obviously there's a massive recall from Apple for free exchanges.

Out of box, I have 2 small dents on the edge showing the underlying silver. Not impressed

If it can't even holdup in the box... how is it going to look in a month from now? Guess it's time to return it for another one but can't bring myself to get the white. Looks like Apple may have a problem on their hands with this.

just got mine. Nick in the side and my home button is completely crooked. This is really disappointing. Im really considering just waiting for the lumia 920. I was torn between.

The white is not immune to dents/scratches.

I just put a case on mine and there are two chipped off dents on the back underneath the lower volume button.

In the end though your phone is going to show some kind of wear at some point.

Hrmm...

"Anodized coatings can be colored by dyeing - and because anodizing is a chemical bond to the metal, these colored coatings cannot flake or peel. The microscopic structure of an anodized coating consists of many small hexagonal pores. These are filled with a sealer that hydrolyzes the pores to create a smooth, durable surface."

"Anodizing cannot peel off. The coating is actually part of the metal"

From various sources around the web...

What am I missing here. Do we have an actual issue?

Thing is people who have no issues with their phone aren't going on the Internet to tell everyone about it. Threads like this will be skewed with people who have issues. Just like when the new iPad came out and some complaint of display issues. Yet Apple still sold 17 million of them (so far).

We won't know how big of an issue this is until more people have the devices and have used them for a while.

No metal is black all the way through.

No it's anodized, which accelerates the natural coating of Aluminium Oxide and makes it thicker, all Apple Products are anodized, like Macbooks and iMacs, which can then be dyed, like the New iPod touches, Nanos, and Shuffles and the slate color on the iPhone 5, Macbooks, iMacs and white iPhone 5 are not dyed, hence the Anodizing may still come off, but will not be easily noticeable, as a natural coating of Aluminium Oxide will occour, just not as thick. The main source of complaint is the diamond cut, polish edging (the slanted sections) which on the white model has no anodizing. If you are worried get the white model. Anodizing can peel off because it's just a bonded coating of Aluminium Oxide. However, On most Apple products which have not been dyed, when you take a layer of Aluminium oxide off, some remains of the same colour, eventually if you keep going it will become more shiny. I would suggest waiting a month until the products which were rushed in manufacturing, to produce as many units as possible, to meet demand have been sold.

Of course that will always be true. And it would make sense that a lot are new forum users b.c they joined just b.c they had the issue.

My 16gb black has a small scuff at the top middle on the chamfered edge out of the box. It's hard to see, but if I get more wear, I'm going to exchange it for a white. My 4S was a white, and I'm ready for a change to black, but I don't want what I consider to be abnormal wear and tear.

Are you seriously that ignorant??. I bet i have more apple gear than you, are you trolling here or what?? burring your head in the sand maybe?
I love the phone to bits and have shown it off all day to friends and work mates, your comment is absolute true 'fanboy' rubbish i hears others mention about apple threads. Be reasonable here, i love all my apple products but after handing out $1800 for my iphone and my wifes i deserve more than anodising wearing in 4 hours. I hope your joking mate! :(

You'd lose that bet.

Example: my first Mac was a Mac Plus 512ke. You?

Has anyone called the Apple Online store to attempt an exchange? Can they setup an exchange, or do you need to return for refund and reorder?

Small scratch near lock button right out of the box. Not happy after dropping a grand on this thing.

We can only go by the results in this thread of course, but so far 136 votes 65 scratched phones - 48%.

this isn't s scientific poll, any ****** can come here in click, iphone owner or not....lol half the phones, hahaha, i love when people just make up random nuimbers
