iPhone 5 Details: 3.7-Inch Screen, Home Button with Gesture Area

I switched from ios to android after selling my 3g and getting a Captivate. After owning the captivate and using my friends iphone 4 quite a bit there are 3 things that can get me to switch back.

1. Bigger screen. I'd take an decrease of pixel density over smaller screen size any day. I'd love a 4 inch screen but 3.7 is okay.

2. (puts up flame shield) Iphone 4 feels like a brick. HEAVY. My captivate with a case is feels MUCH lighter than i4. I'd like it if apple could trim the fat somewhere without sacrificing it's great battery life.

3. Better notification system with some sort of widgets (or at least some relevant lockscreen info and quick access to settings). I can't believe it's taken this long and the few rumors of ios 5 haven't been getting my hopes up.

I'm over flash on a phone, I barely ever use it, but I still would like something to fill the gap in the tablet space while html 5 matures.

To the iphone's credit, the overall package is much more polished than android (except for notifications-those are just embarrassing)

and as a bonus, my captivate gps doesn't work for jack so I'm not being tracked. :cool:

I find the ip4 to be way too heavy and awkward to hold. I like this design, it allows weight to be shaved off and perhaps (!) be more ergonomically friendly.

I agree that the back should be made extra study and NOT in chrome. I see them using the same type of backing as the ipads...

One more thing that the tapered back will enable is ease of use while its on a desk because the viewing angle will be nicer. On the other hand, it would make it more awkward in landscape mode and for playing game because one side would be thicker than the other. Perhaps its easy to get used to? time will tell!
 
That render is terrible. Apple should stick with the iPhone 4 design if this is the alternative. I will never buy another product with a Chrome back casing like that. Had an iPod Touch back in the day (still have it, actually, unused) with a chrome back, and it looks like **** after like, a week of use. Scratches easily and feels weird in my hands.
 
Maybe I'm just picky, but it looks like it might be TOO thin! Like I preferred the 3rd gen iPod touches because they seemed to be the best thickness, the 4th gen took it too far and having the volume and lock buttons on the curve felt weird and not as nice :/

I'll still buy it though lol.

And I agree with you. I think it would make sense to call it iPhone 5 though - I think the "ProductName ProductVersion#" naming convention Apple has started using lately makes a lot of sense and is way simpler to understand for the average Joe than something like iPhone 3GS.

Yup, I was one of the haters when the iPhone 4 leaked. I still prefer the physical design of my 3GS. The rounded edged are perfect holding the phone feels like shaking someone's hand. The iPhone 4 doesn't feel as nice to hold, even if it does have nicer aesthetics.

I would kill for a return to the old design, but eliminate the chrome rim on the front and have the back case curl all the way up to the black face. Then made the back from a new material that doesn't crack as easily as the old plastic. Maybe a molded carbon fiber design? That would be sexy as hell. An iPhone 4 style dark grey carbon back casing flush with the now iconic black face, no shiny chrome ********.
 
Before seeing this, I had more or less decided I would skip the next upgrade but I have to admit I love that design. Stick 64 gigs in it and I'll be at the top of the queue

Obviously, Joshua has never seen the internals of the iPhone 4. The camera has been progressively getting bigger since the 3G. The iPhone 4's camera is relatively huge and boxy. It couldn't possibly fit inside this design, which is why the iPod Touch has a much lower quality one. Unless the iPhone 5's camera is expected to be only for FaceTime (like iPod Touch and iPad 2) there is no way. I believe this is a major reason the iPhone 4 got a boxier design, to squeeze in as much as possible (read: battery) and keep the rear camera in the corner (since it couldn't fit behind the receiver speaker and/or front camera in the middle).

Plus the track record is poor. Joshua and Arn are just looking for hits.

Looks ugly and much like a photo shopped iPod touch. Plus the bottom is to thin to support the 30pin as the iPod touch is just about big enough and losing half it's depth would be to narrow. Plus getting screen plus a5 plus screen into that form factor doesn't seem possible oh and don't forget a decent battery.

What is funny is remembering the outcry on the early leaked pictures on the iPhone 4 and how ugly it was... Yet it is the best looking phone in the world now.
 
I'm not digging this. I think it will be too hard to hold onto being that thin and the prospect of pad charging leads me to wonder how on earth you go about charging it in a car? Doesn't sound very convenient. Not to mention, how long of a battery life could this thing possibly have?

nah. I doubt they would do this. .2 inches is not that much bigger and would cause problems with designing apps to look good on it. I can see a 4 inch screen, and them getting rid of the home button. What they'll do for the home button is make the screen clickable at the bottom where the home button used to be. It would be similar to squeezing a magic trackpad. That would enable them to get rid of the home button and expand the screen to that area, making it a 4 inch screen. I can also see the area above the screen and next to the camera and ear piece become touch sensitive, enabling "drag down" menus that would enable multitasking or enable quick settings. For example, you could drag down from one corner to get multitasking menu and switch back to a different app, (8 instead of 4, I hope) and drag down from the other corner to quickly adjust screen brightness and turn your wifi hotspot on or off. They may also make the back touch sensitive, but I can't imagine a use for that, so I don't know what they'll do with it. But they made a glass back for a reason. I think they have a really good idea of what to do with a touch sensitive back.
 
that would def be SICK, but it doesn't seem likely. I'll wait and see though, I hope it is this cool!

If i don't like the form factor, I'll just find a case that feels good

Damn right it is. I sold mine a few weeks back but now might buy a white one which I'll keep until I can get my hands on an iP5. I've never considered buying back tech I'd sold before but I genuinely miss holding and using it. Never has metal and glass looked so sexy as a phone.
 
Well, Rumors I hear suggest this may be a new iPhone but not the new iPhone.
Cook said he wanted a more affordable one. What better than an iPod Touch that can make calls if you buy credit on a pay-as-you go basis?
This will have A4, 4-8GB, retina res but not IPS and sell for under $200 with no contract.
Existing Touch will be replaced by a 5-6" game-centric model with A5 and 1024 x 768 retina screen.

nah there r better looking HTC out there by now, the new one they got (forgot its name) with the slide out keyboard is pure sex ^^
