Just curious. Are Samsung forums flooded with people who use iPhones and berate Samsung users? Are there Samsung forums?

Lol....It's pretty funny....an android user comes to a site entitled "MacRumors" and call people "fanboys"

I'm gonna go ahead and run over to the toyota forums and call them toyota fanboys.....brb lol

I have to agree with most of the other posts. Apple makes a really good looking product but iOS is dated. It has looked the same since day one and is just dated!

I agree that iOS doesn't do everything I need it to do!

I personally don't see that, it does everything i need it to and more. Just because the main home screen hasn't been changed drastically, it doesn't make the OS dated. It's just not all up in your face like android.

Sucker logic.

Samsung and other OEMs keep recreating new hardware because their users can't get the latest release of the OS. They'd rather force them into buying brand new hardware. Android is being released at such a pace the OEMs and carriers can't keep up, so they ditch their current customers and just move on to new devices. And maybe, eventually put out an update... MAYBE.

I know a ton of people still using the 3GS as their phone. Why? Because over the passed 3.5 years, Apple has offered 3 OS upgrades; 3.0 - > 4.0 -> 5.0-> 6.0. Most people don't care about new hardware, they just want their phone to continue working.

People who do upgrade to new hardware may not be interested in how it looks but other aspects: better screen, faster performance, etc.

When I upgrade ANY product or device, it's not because of how it looks, but rather what it's capable of doing better than the current device I have.

In addition, it is almost always about the software. Regardless of which phone is speced better, a vast majority of Android users are still on version 2.X and at the OEMs mercy, while over 50% of Apple users, regardless of phone model, are already using the latest iOS version.

# of models is irrelevant. Point is Android has a better adoption rate than iOS. Apple has models across all price points from free to massively expensive. But for whatever reason more people are choosing Android. I'm not saying this as a Fandroid, but as an iOS fan that reluctantly recognizes Apple needs to revisit iOS or it's going to get smashed like it did with the Mac OS.
Sorry, but to say that number of models is irrelevant is ridiculous.

Let's use an extreme as an example. Let's say Apple had 10,000 different phone types, all running iOS, while Android had ONE phone type.

Which OS do you think would find it easier/harder to rack up M/S?

Now the real situation isn't as extreme, but it's the same concept.

Apple do have phones across different price points, but the only way to get the really low end is to buy a phone that's now 30 months old (ish).

That's a somewhat harder sell than a brand new phone, just released this week, that's the same price as the 30month old one.

Let us compare smartphones

The real question is how many of those phones that Samsung shipped were really smartphones, I mean they make a lot dumbphones as well. Let us compare the numbers of Galaxy S3 and iPhone...

What do you NEED from a phone that the iPhone does not do. I express the "need" part of your comment.
If we started talking about NEEDs you could stick everyone on a Nokia 3210 and be done with it.

People dont buy a phone because they NEED a certain feature, they buy it because they WANT it - pretty much the entire Apple product line focuses on WANT not NEED.

Samsung has a lot of hardcore religious fans now.

Just like Apple, Google and Microsoft then, surely?

How many of these iOS users on older hardware are getting the benefit of the newer software

Does an iPhone 4 have all the features of iOS 6

I'm on Macrumors for the Mac news not iOS. I don't care about anything Apple does that's not related to OS X

Right but the Android OS has a higher marketshare than iOS. Apple does care about that b/c it affects what platform devs develop for first. Also a lot of the new iPhone sales are people upgrading old iPhones. Its not new customers. That's also a problem. Plus Apple wants the bragging rights, I'm sure.

to an extent. developers care about which platform has the highest share of users willing to pay for their product. and that's ios by a huge margin. and it's also the reason win 8 will be the threat android never was.

I'll bite.

Right now - Google Maps; andmade share; swype; choice of browsers not based on webkit

Ok, fair enough. 3 of those 4 are preferences, not something that is completely unavailable on both, but okay.

FYI: I'm not being sacastic, just curious. I'd bet that 90% of apps that 90% of people need are on both systems. Pre-approval and vetting of apps gives the edge to Apple. Of course, my 'statistics', like Samsungs sales numbers, are made up, so who knows.

Now I'm being sarcastic. :D

I'd love to see UK sales figures, but we only ever seem to see either US or worldwide here at MacRumors.

I say this because (in a totally unscientific just "looking around" sort of way, I'm convinced there are WAY more iPhones than Samsungs over here.

I have to agree.

Funnily enough, until about a year ago, all I would ever see would be Blackberry phones - now its all iPhone4/4 everywhere.

This is exactly my point. All the iphone fans love to point out that windows phone 7 will only be upgraded to 7.8 but it's the same as Apple upgrading all the the phones to ios6 but not all phones will get the features.

A lot of people don't care. because they upgrade their phone every 2 years. Also - what's not mentioned here is that Android updates its core apps pretty often without updating the entire OS. Apple didn't have that strategy at least initially. Users had to wait until a full OS update to get new functionality/etc.

I'd also argue for both Apple and Android that updates matter only to people who want/need more functionality. There are a ton of people who don't care about it because they use their phone "fine" the way it is. Never upgrading regardless of how many are available.

You will probably find that most of these people on here are long time Apple users annoyed at the lack of change from Apple.

Bingo. I love my macs! Not so much the iPhone. Gave that up almost 2 years ago, and just recently jumped ship from the iPad. I was fortunate to not have been overly vested in the ecosystem though (I use amazon for most things). I know a LOT of people who want to move away from iPhone & iPad, but feel they can't because iTunes has 'em by the balls. But, like I said... I do like my Macs.

I'd go so far as to say that I *still* see more blackberries around than I do Samsungs.

Samsung's rise is pretty impressive even if your not a Samsung fan

I was a big Nokia fan, but I moved to Samsung since Nokia is stagnant in this transition phase. There aren't Symbian updates anymore and software is looking increasingly outdated. However it has good built-in features like fm transmitter, state-of-the-art mobile cameras and a very nice Maps suite.

But this move on the Microsoft direction in a more tied ecosystem (limited bluetooth functionality for example) makes me moving to another platform. I think Android is the answer to the Symbian orphans that need a not-so-closed operating system without any artificially locked features.

Totally agree, especially when you see a samsung phone fall and the battery and plastic cover go flying off...

Whilst I see what you're getting at, what do you seriously think is a better end result of dropping a phone:

- Drop a Samsung, back cover pops off, the battery comes out, and maybe the SD or Sim card as well - you shout at the floor, pick the bits up, put it back together and carry on.

- Drop an iPhone, smash the screen, scuff the metalwork, shout at the floor, then go into your local AppleStore and ask how much it'll cost.

This whole "open" or "close" BS, the general public does not care about.
On the hardware side, the main reason people buy Android is because it has a bigger screen. On the software side, the main reason people buy Android is Widgets and Live Wallpapers. On the business side the reason people buy Android is because it is available in more carriers at mostly lower price points.

Their market share is dropping because the NUMBER (not necessarily, but arguably the quality too) of competitors is going through the roof.

Android smartphones of massively varying qualities (and prices) are flooding the market, so obviously a company who essentially make ONE (premium priced) phone each year's market share is going to drop.

As long as each iPhone Apple release continues to be the fastest selling phone in history, i don't think they'll mind too much about M/S which really is a problem that's tough to deal with, in this sort of market.

Now, one must understand that Apple has many things to deal with. iPhones, iPads, many different iPods, MacBooks, iMacs, Mac Pro, iOS, OS X and iCloud just to name most of it.

Let's see what Samsung has to deal with. Phones, Laptops, TVs, Fridges (if I miss out any, sorry to hardcore Samsung fanboys).

Compare that to Apple, and Apple has tons more work to do. What does Samsung have to do? Make the hardware, make sure it works and their job is done. What does Apple have to do? Make the hardware, software, test it out, manage their data centers for iCloud.

My mother bought a Samsung Galaxy SIII recently, and complained about, and I quote, "the cheap plastic behind it".

And I am seriously tired of saying this. Google has released its software to many smartphone manufacturers. Apple is not releasing iOS to smartphone manufacturers. So you can't actually compare the number of iOS devices to Android devices. If you want to compare the numbers, you should compare Apple with *insert smartphone manufacturers' brands here*.

P.S. The iPhone isn't losing market share; it's gaining on Android. 52.2% (Android) vs 33.4% (iPhone) as of July 2012. If you compare the number of Android devices with, let's say, the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S, since the iPhone 5 was not released until September 25, Apple is actually doing great in the smartphone market with only three versions of iPhones in the market. With the iPhone 5 release on September 25, Apple has a greater chance of getting at least a 34-35% market share if not more.
