I'm on Macrumors for the Mac news not iOS. I don't care about anything Apple does that's not related to OS X

I'll buy an iPad the day it runs OSX. But probably this will happen after Microsoft launches the Surface Pro which already has a digitizer pen support... so currently Surface Pro is my first - if not the only - choice.

Do you have a point? Are you really suggesting that people should only post in Mac threads because they don't have or like the iPhone?
In fairness, the other poster said that not only did he not OWN an iPhone, he didn't CARE about anything apple did not mac related.

If you don't CARE about something, it does sort of beg the question why you'd 1) read and 2) reply to a thread about it.

Why oh why do tech blogs keep writing on this ********. Of course one company that currently has 15 or 30 current models of phones is going to sell more than a company that currently produces 2 or 3. All these dumb articles do is increase the sale of lotion and kleenex by Android fanboys.

So, you think Apple is intentionally keeping the number of models low to reduce their sales? Brilliant!

The release of iPhone 4S partly helped Samsung achieve that tremendous growth. Think about it, in late 2011, you'd had your iPhone 4 for 18 months already, if you don't understand what does dual core etc. mean, would you want to buy a phone that looks exactly the same and hold it for another 12 months or more?

Many people bought the S2 then S3 just because of this. They couldn't care less about "Android" or "Open", they just wanted a phone that's .. different.

I just can’t understand this mindset. Why people feel the need to switch out their phone every year or less…If the phone works and does everything you need, why do you need a new phone? To me, it only makes sense to switch to another phone if my current one is too slow to run modern apps, lacks an important function that the newest phone has or doesn’t work/has issues. Who cares if it looks the same or if I hold onto the phone for 3 to 4 years?

Especially, what I don’t get is when people don’t care about a phone’s features and simply want one that “looks different” and constantly switch phones because of this.

Care to back that up? Funnily enough I call bs.

No, no I don't. ;)
I'm using hyperbole to make the point that even without all the newest features at least Apple is adding new features to its older phones consistantly, while Android OEMs rarely update and just push new hardware (which is their business, afterall).

If i throw a bunch of **** on a wall, some of it will stick.

That's really not true here. Why does everyone have to be one or the other? Both make excellent products. I had an iPhone4, it broke, so I bought the Galaxy S3 bc that was the best phone out (i wasn't going to get the 4s bc I knew the 5 was coming out) I loved some things about my iPhone, I love some things about the S3.....why can't people see this?

Just curious. Are Samsung forums flooded with people who use iPhones and berate Samsung users? Are there Samsung forums?
This is an Apple/Mac forum not just iPhone, so Samsung owners here typically own(ed) other Apple products, many of them have owned iPhone in the past.

Now, one must understand that Apple has many things to deal with. iPhones, iPads, many different iPods, MacBooks, iMacs, Mac Pro, iOS, OS X and iCloud just to name most of it.

Let's see what Samsung has to deal with. Phones, Laptops, TVs, Fridges (if I miss out any, sorry to hardcore Samsung fanboys).

Compare that to Apple, and Apple has tons more work to do.
Hahaha...

Are you kidding me?

Seriously... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Screens, hard drives, portable drives, CD drives, Blu ray drives, audio systems, DSLRs, video cameras, MP3 players, 3D glasses, projectors, microphones, tablets, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, food processors, coffee machines, microwaves, ovens, cooker hobs, cooker hoods... I'm only touching the tip of the Iceberg here!

Samsung does a million times more than Apple! How can someone be so delusional?

EDIT:

I just thought I'll come back and add to the list:
Printers, scanners, e-book readers, car radios, watches, wall mounts, freaking cars (Renault Samsung), software, portable projectors, CCTV equipment, media streamers, web cams, light bulbs...

Honestly, I don't trust Samsung's numbers.

Or Google's numbers.

Really. Why? Other countries have better rules to control on what their companies are reporting unlike here with self regulation, 4 auditing companies and 3 rating companies. Enron, Worldcom all reported very good certified numbers.

Not sure how you got that from the post you quoted, but go on, I'll bite.

Apple is far less concerned about SALES than it is about PROFIT.

Keeping the number of models low might decrease sales/market share, but they are still absolutely WHOMPING Samsung when it comes to overall profit.

LOL @ iOS being dated. It's only dated to young people who constantly need something changed for its own sake -- usually to justify their ADD. Once you are in the tech field long enough you find out that most people hate change and constancy with consistency will always outperform the flashy thing that keeps changing in the long run.

I tend to agree with this in part.

This is an old, obsolete argument. Apple currently makes 32 different iPhone models; two colors, 3 different carriers, 3 different sizes (for iPhone 5), across many different price points (including free). That gives people plenty of choices.

Come on. Even though I'm an Apple fan, it's basically 2 phone form factors - the 4 and the 5. Storage. color etc. is not a completely different model.

Look. Both companies make great products. The thing that is crazy is the people claiming SG3 is cheap because it has plastic parts. Do you people realize how easy it is to scratch the aluminum on the iphone? Build quality is WAY overhyped here. Plastic =/= bad quality just as aluminum =/= amazing quality.

Different people want different products.

Samsung has JB, which IS the best OS as of right now. It's also fully customizable.

iPhone has the clean and simple aspect. Easy to use.

I would disagree that JB is the best OS, it's a matter of taste- but it does have some excellent features iOS lacks. I still can't stand the fact every Android device I've owned will run apps in the background that I've never opened or used- EVER. But you make some excellent points on build quality and different strokes for different people.

# of models is irrelevant. Point is Android has a better adoption rate than iOS. Apple has models across all price points from free to massively expensive. But for whatever reason more people are choosing Android. I'm not saying this as a Fandroid, but as an iOS fan that reluctantly recognizes Apple needs to revisit iOS or it's going to get smashed like it did with the Mac OS.

Excellent point about revisiting iOS and comparing this to Mac OS. Not even a complete overhaul but some updating- especially widgets/quick access to the most common settings.

Well according to all the drop test videos I have seen, the samsung phones crack FIRST or stop working first. So, I'll take a cracked phone over a non functioning plastic phone any day :)
You are cherry-picking "tests". In any case, when Android phone "plastic cover go flying off", typically the phone does not crack. An iPhone 4 would crack most of the time.

Well, Samsung made almost as much as Apple in profits in Q3 but I agree with your point. Still, the number of sold phones is important because market share affects app developers priorities and in the long run influences the vitality of the ecosystem (PC vs Mac obviously is a great example).

I'd be interested to know exactly which apps you need to run that are not on iOS. Please be specific.

Any in-house app that my small company develops. On Android one simply writes the freaking code and deploys it. No developer hoops to jump through. None of this provisioning crap. Unlike Apple, Google couldn't care less.

Next question please.

Yes I agree. Love the hardware of my white iPhone5 but iOS is a disappointment after my Galaxy Nexus. Today I tried to email a PDF (not a link, but the file itself) from dropbox... How complicated can it be? Had to open/download the file in Dropbox, open it in another app: Docstogo, email from docstogo. A proper file system or a folder in which to save temporary files would be so much easier.
Another one: Android has the possibility to share pictures, files, text (or whatever) with basically all other apps on the phone. Every app has a 'share' button. I really miss this on iOS.

Wrong. I just went to Dropbox on iOS, selected document and opened it, hit the share button at lower left, and selected email and sent link to document.

My 2-1/2 year old IP4 with iOS6 has a hell of a lot more of the current features than ANY 1 year or older 2.X Android.

Really? What are they then? because it doesn't have, for example, built in turn-by-turn navigation, to name but one.

I still fail to see the true logic in Apple's "one" model vs (for example) Samsung's many models when it comes to arguing marketshare.

When a single person walks into the store - they (more than likely) are buying ONE phone. They have a choice (narrowing this down) - Apple/iOS or Not Apple/iOS (let's say Samsung/Android).

It's not an obvious statement to say that since Samsung makes so many different ones, they automatically should have more marketshare. It only means that if someone doesn't want an iPhone/iOS - they have many choices as to which phone they do get.

It's not the same - for example - as buying a pair of jeans or shirts where someone might walk into several different stores and buy 2 from one and 3 from another.

Well, I can't speak for others, but I bought my Galaxy Note not based on a choice iOS vs. Android. I wanted to have a phone with a large screen and Samsung had a suitable model and therefore got my money and the Marketshare for Samsung increased by one phone....

If Apple had phones with larger screen sizes to choose from, they would have gotten my money instead. This is just one example, but I fail to see, why it is so hard to understand that more choices lead to more Marketshare?

You don't care yet you posted on a thread clearly concerning phones. Does Apple make a "MACphone we aren't aware of?

What do you NEED from a phone that the iPhone does not do. I express the "need" part of your comment.

1. The ability to send and receive my work text messages from my tablet and PC. We do ASAP info over text now - emails are to slow, hahaha!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.desktopsms&hl=en

2. Direct Mount drive capability to my SD card
3. Direct access to all SD card files from inside email client for attachments.
4. Quick access to emails and text list on homescreen.

And yes, extra battery - I've had a 9hr lay over in South Africa after a 14hr flight... no need to worry about charging my phone on business trips. Replace and go.

I love my Macs but my iPhone could not keep up.

Oh. So you're saying that you bought an Samsung - but you really wanted an iPhone but couldn't afford it. So you settled for a crappy phone just over screen size.

/sarcasm - but that's how too many on this forum think.

I'm absolutely in agreement with that. Given that the 4S and the 5 are quite similar, they only really address different price points, not different use case/user profiles.

Samsung and the other Android manufacturers make a lot of different phones. If you're cynical about it, you'd say it's a throw-at-the-wall-see-what-sticks approach, but in really it gives their customers a wider choice. It's an approach to business that works well for them.

I believe that it's an inevitability that eventually Apple will diversify into a number of different iPhones that meet different needs of customers - in fact, when their growth slows, they will have to.

And it's not without precedent- they've for a long time sold quite a few different models of iPod - each with their own demographic - and now the iPad mini diversifies the iPad line.
