I disgaree. NFC is not a foregone conclusion. There are alternatives in blue tooth and wifi direct... Apple isn't going to add a feature that will be used rarely by around 5% of users. It just doesn't make any sense as consumers as a whole are not demanding NFC and retailers aren't supporting it.
As I said before, if Apple puts it in the iPhone, consumers and retailers will support it. Someone brought up the international factor - it may not be used by many people in the US but it certainly is in foreign markets. Apple sells a whole lot of phones outside of the US. Think beyond your backyard.

What's the difference if you lost your car keyfob instead?

If you lost you keyfob it means you won't be able to get in the car. If you lost your phone it means you won't be able to get into your car and also won't be able to call anyone for help. Even if you asked a passer by to borrow their cellphone you can't call any friends or relatives because you don't know their phone number. Does anyone memorize phone numbers these days?

The MDM9615M supports a protocol called GOBI, which is used for nearby networking like hand held games, reading power meters, and other ad hoc networking features, like PAYMENT SYSTEMS.

So Apple, the leader in micropayments will soon release payment HARDWARE in iPhones, iPads, iPodTouches which means it will be trivial for vendors to also add an iPodTouch as a payment gateway RECEIVER. Apple will be dominant on both ends of mobile and fixed point payment systems. It is a small step to become the gateway provider as well such as is the case with Square (2.75%), Google Wallet (2.5%), and all the Verifone vendors.

What's next, an Apple credit card and bank, headquartered in UT, USA, Brazil, Shanghai, and St. Petersburg? Just a matter of time.

Rocketman

Exactly. I'd say it's also about that implementation as part of a SYSTEM, i.e., iTunes/Apps/iCloud/Airplay/iOS/OSX/etc.

:)

The Ecosystem is huge now. Its why I stick with Apple....TBH my start came with a macbook pro and then branched out into the mobile devices. Everything works so seamlessly and I'm excited to "Apple-fy" my new house with surround sound hooked up to my airport express.

Give me quad-core.

Quad Core is a bonus but I really don't care if it's there or not. Give me at least a dual core that's easy on the battery and ideally with at least a noticeable performance bump over the A5 and I'll be more than happy. When it comes to phones I'd take less power over more performance any day.

Oh and just to throw this out there, would an A5 with 1Gb not qualify as an A6... :D

Lol I think when you talk about the Apple events, if you want to be surprise don't look at the leaks websites. They will spoil everything!:D

Question:

I'll be preordering 2 iPhone 5's (one for me and one for the wife) but we are both on family plans (just cheaper that way) and she will be using her grandmother's number to upgrade. Does pre-ordering do anything activation wise? What are my steps?

So the iPhone 4S is geting a spec bump - Nice.

I wonder what the iPhone coming out after the 4S will have.

Seeing as how the iPhone 4S = the iPhone "5".

Like going from the first iPhone to iPhone 3G? Their naming for the iPhones doesn't make any sort of logical sense already. In fact why don't they call the new iPhone the 4G? Since rumors are it will have LTE.

iPhone LTE would make more sense for that because the phone will supposedly have global LTE...

Also, a lot of uniformed people already called the "iPhone 4" the "iPhone 4G" because they didn't know any better.

The iPhone 4 was actually the 4th iPhone, it just worked out nice that the phone before it was the 3GS and then the 5th iPhone was the updated iPhone 4... so it was called the iPhone 4S... For the new phone, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 make sense... so does iPhone LTE and the new "iPhone".

In the end, each side has valid points, but what really matters, is whatever logic Apple decides to use.

Good post, very interesting with Passbook on deck and the whole question (though seemingly answered) about NFC.

That's a good thing as you should be able to get those iPhone "5"s for around $100 each assuming Apple maintains it's pricing model as it phases those out for the new upcoming iPhone 6.

3G means something more. It was a defining feature of the phone.
Actually "3G" indicated the technology being used in the cellular antennae and not the numbering convention of the quantity of phone models taht had been previously released.

Pre-order using grandmother's line. When you get the phone, put your current sim in the new phone (assuming you have a microsim and the iPhone 5 uses microsim) and it should activate itself. If iPhone 5 uses nanosim, you will need to get your carrier involved to get a new sim.

Gotcha, that's what I figured. I guess now that I think about it, it was a stupid question given you have to physically walk through the activation process yourself

Thanks!
