the last mockup is particularily good, and I actually HOPE to see the iPhone 5 like that.

I really think apple will follow this, the idea of keeping the device the same size except with a bigger screen is very easy to market with comparison. The fact the top and bottom of the device look noticably different really emphasizes this with first glance. I think it'd be beautiful!

I was under the impression that the edge-to-edge screen was to accommodate the idea of an iPhone nano without decreasing the screen size.

Yeah, but I figured they would want to keep it symmetrical for horizontal viewing/games. Plus the OCD in me wants to keep it that way. :p

Yeah, I'm not sure how they'd deal with the visual balance. Loosing the side borders almost makes it scream to loose the entire bezel all together- at least for me. Stellar job on those mockups though- really. The article's only been up a couple hours and that's great work.

I don't see them going to the edge with the screen. I mean, how are you supposed to put a case on of these hypothetical models without cutting off any part of it? I don't see a way around that. And with the hypothetical nano, with the smaller display, it would make it even more difficult to type on because the keys would be much smaller. Come on people, do some better guessing.

I use an air jacket from Power Support and it fits without overlapping the glass. It can be done for an edge-to-edge display with no problem, and not only with super-thin cases either.

There's an app for that

I just don't see them introducing a "iPhone" with reduced functionality. When you take away apps, it's not really an iPhone anymore.

I agree. A big part of the iPhone marketing has been "there's an app for that." Apple's been really successful with that slogan. I hear it in everyday speech, on TV shows, etc. There's no way they're going to ditch that slogan, much less the entire App Store ecosystem, just because there's a smaller screen.

If anything they will differentiate based on storage space (same as iPod nano) and battery capacity (but battery life would be similar since a smaller screen would require less power).

Old antenna?

If your going to do a mock up don't use the bad antenna. Use the CDMA version on or a whole new one. The GMS antenna doesn't cut it. :apple:

Well if there were to be multiple sliders for notifications I thought it would make more sense to have a label for where it takes you, rather than the vague arrow.

dont like the edge to edge, i think it looks better with a border...even if its just a very slim one.

This could be the real iPhone 5

I don't know if any of you remember but a year before the iPad was announced , there were pictures of mock-ups and one of those pictures turned out to be the real deal. So I belive that the picture with the old set of headphones could turn out to be the real deal. It looks a lot like something that apple could do. Plus this picture came out between Feb and march 2010

So what do you think??

haven't read the replies, but you'd think they'd at least get the fixed antenna right in mockups (i.e. the Verizon iPhone)

Nah that edge-edge looks weird...Jobs wouldn't allow it for sure.
That older mockup still looks nice though but it won't be like that also

It's so funny to me when someone does a mock up how everyone acts like they're real. HELLO. MOCK UP. NOT REAL. Apple not producing these. Have fun with it!

@ mjay2k thank you for sharing these mock ups. Your point about what they can do with screen size is understood by most of us. I actually like you mini mock up. It looks proportionate.

Obviously Apple would sex them up. And I can see Apple going a route like this. They always try to get smaller yet larger if you will. Rumors have been around for awhile too that the iMac will loose the bezel, and I can see that going into a lot of the product lines. I will say that if you are playing a game on the iPhone, the bezel area does give you a place to rest your fingers while holding the device. If it were all screen with no bezel, that wouldn't work so well so I can't see the bezel going away. Trying to touch each end of the screen would be really hard. Another reason why I don't see the home button going away. The space does two things. FInger rest when in landscape and a home button, same for ear piece area.

so the so called "mini" is suppose to be cheeper right?

well doesn't the previous iPhone the 3Gs for $45. do what the mini is suppose to?

Those things would be breaking all over the place. I actually like the old mock-up better than the new ones.

Those things would be breaking all over the place.

And just how would it be any more fragile than an iPod touch? It already has edge-to-edge glass. This just eliminates unnecessary bezel. Not a huge change, or any at all really, in the construction or durability of the iPhone. It's not like it's adding thinner, glass or any more glass at all for that matter.

that's much more like it. why did you change the slider button into an ugly "Home" button though? that's terrible.

I mentioned it above, but I thought with the sliding notifications the bottom slider was too vague - not intuitive that it leads to the home screen. Point taken though.
