I imagine 'pent up demand' is spot on. I skipped the 3GS because I don't believe in upgrading every cycle (and I'm not made of money). I skipped the 4 because of the glass back and antenna issues. I skipped the 4S… reluctantly, waiting for the next big thing… and here it is. Do you think I will notice the speed increase over my old 3G? :)

Omg me and you will definitely notice I think and I can't wait! I have a 3GS myself which I upgraded forom the og iPhone . I also didn't want the glass iPhone 4 and well didn't have money at time 4s was the same so I just decided to wait and I'm glad I did this iPhone 5 is aluminum and all black it's damn sexy lol and can't wait to see the difference in speed and overall greatness haha

Why compare the sales of the 5 with the S3? Apple has only 1 main phone whereas Samsung is marketing different products for different types of customers. At the end of the day, Samsung is still selling more smartphones than any other company, including Apple.

Yes, i agree. Why campare the company who reveal their sale data and the company who don't.

Oh, and one of my friend just bought a crappy Samsung Galaxy for $100 unsubsidized. No wonder they sold so much. (btw, if she has money she would buy iPhone in a heartbeat). I can see how you are proud of Samsung LOL.

I was not a fan of the two-toned back when mockups started appearing on MR. But I always said if there's a practical reason for it, and the antenna functions well, then I'm fine with it. It's probably a good thing those early mockups looked so ordinary… It gave a chance for the actual product to look better. I'll happily concede that Apple does make the black one look pretty good in its own product shots.

… and can't wait to see the difference in speed and overall greatness haha

Yes, for me—going from a 3G to a 5—I imagine it will be like trading up from pedal power to a roaring V8.

wow its faster great.. so now instead of waiting 1/10th of a second its 1/20th of a second.. thats awesome..

phones are fast already.. its like buying the newest ferarri that can now go 300MPH even though you never took your old ferarri to 200mph.

There are no speed limits on the ol' information superhighway my friend. Not only is the iPhone 5's processing and graphics significantly faster, but so is cellular and wi-fi connectivity. But I can see why you might be disappointed if you were expecting some really important changes—you know, like a teardrop shaped case, or 'tilt to zoom' or something.

My my, can't you just enjoy what you have? I never get why people feel the need to insult others on forums for their own preferences.

That's the thing… When people are genuinely happy with what they have, they don't feel the need to insult others like that. I suspect most trolls have inferiority issues.

I struggle to understand the allure of the iPhone.

Don't get me wrong, I've been buying Apple laptops for over 6 years (and regularly repair, rebuild, and parts them out for a hobby), I've been using iPods for nearly 8 years, and i think the iPad is one of the best electronic devices out there.

But I finally got an iPhone 4s after years of saying "I think it's one of the best phones out there" and I was sorely disappointed. I kept it two months before selling it off and going back to a Blackberry. I'll admit I'm not a fan of touchscreens but I was willing to give it a shot.

But touchscreens aside I just don't understand. There's been little innovation on the iPhone in years, aside from spec bumps and minor cosmetic changes. Games and multimedia are really cool and nice and video/pictures are done well on the iPhone but at what cost?

As a phone it's medicore, as an emailing tool it's average, and as a communication device in general it's average at best. The battery life isn't terrible but it isn't great either. iCloud was prematurely released as was Siri. It's fragile and lacks good grip.

I don't mean to hate so much, but I don't get how Apple just releases pretty much the same old phone every year or two and breaks sales records with it.

So do people really not want a phone and just want a camera and game device? Because it seems like the iPhone is grossly overrated and has form over function more often than not.

I'll continue to support Apple computers, iPods, and iPads, but the phone just seems dated and misguided in it's purpose.

If you went back to Blackberry, you should probably just accept that your wants and needs in a phone a very different than most. Nothing wrong with that.

Thanks. I think this pretty much sums it up. I don't hate the iPhone, I just think for a phone it lacks in many ways and if your needs are multimedia based it's a fine device, if your needs are reliable easy communication it may not be the best for the job depending on needs.

I also def realize that Apple is often catering to people who know little/care little about technology. I mean how many people's mothers/fathers/grandparents pick up an iPhone and easily begin doing everything on it. And for that Apple is genius. The iPad is a perfect example of this simple but advanced tech merge.

I'm very demanding of my technology and want the best for specific needs. My Macbook Pro is my portable workhorse. It's reliable, long battery life, and I know it'll work when I need it most. I recently built a high end desktop for my gaming and at home needs, I know it'll handle graphic intense programs and run tons of programs at once for weeks on end. I use the Blackberry for communication and work and I need to know it's going to work promptly and dependably when I use it.

Although I do miss the phone check deposit feature and the starbucks on screen scanner.

Oh, diddums. The iPhone 5 went on pre-sale all of 5 days ago and you're complaining already about a dearth of other news/products?

Mountain Lion and new Macbooks Pro and Airs in June, iPhone and iPods in September, iMacs and other products in the wind for October. Tim Cook has already stated that we won't see a new Mac Pro til next year (and if you look at the roadmap for workstation chipsets then it's obvious why).

Seems like the problem is in your imagination.

WTF? I don't think it's unreasonable for a site called "Mac" Rumours to have some rumours/news about the Mac.

I'm not remotely interested in the iPhone, the iPod and Apple's share price. I just don't give a damn. All I'm suggesting is they have a separate section of the website for Mac fans who simply want to read about the Mac, like the good old days before Apple turned into a toy company.

I think I just puked in my mouth...

Numbers numbers and numbers... anyone who's ever worked or work for Apple, know what I'm talking about right here...

Neural linguistics©® will soon be bought and patented by Apple©®tm

Best post I've read. I just don't get it either. I've been using Mac's ever since the colour iMac and I think they are great products. My friends all think I'm mad paying the Apple premium but I like their products so I just grin and bare it because I don't want to go back to Windows. I never joined the iPod revolution because I prefer to listen to a CD at home on my HiFi with decent speakers.

But I simply don't get the continued frenzy surrounding the iPhone. I have 2 mobiles - one for business and one for home. I would say that combined I don't use them both for more than 30 mins a day maybe. It's just a phone. I don't listen to music on the move, I wouldn't watch a film, play a game or surf the internet on that tiny screen so for me it's basically just a phone.

The iPhone 5 is not that different to the iPhone 4 and yet apparently millions of people will rush out and buy it. I checked the local price for the 64GB version unlocked (without a contract) and it was £700. I was amazed how expensive it is now. And yet people will be standing in line Friday waiting to buy one. Their whole life seems to revolve around the iPhone.

Like you I just don't get it. I'm more than happy with my 2 cheap phones. If I drop it and break it or lose it, it's no big deal - it's only £40 to replace it.

I'm sure I'm missing something about the enduring allure of the iPhone but I can't for the life of me think what it is. I've no desire to buy one and I could certainly think of better ways to spend £700.

It's a modern smartphone - a little computer in your pocket with a persistent Internet connection, that plays music, makes phone calls, takes decent pictures, and knows your GPS coordinates. If that doesn't appeal to you, that's fine, it's not for everyone. But if you don't see how that is a very compelling device for many many people, then I think you are perhaps being intentionally obtuse.

-_-

Not sure if serious?

Anyways, i'll bite. Yeah umm Dropbox?

Also, i had a SGS3, and tried to use those NFC file sharing "bump" type of file sharing? and it DESTROYED my battery life.

Ever used Wifi direct? Its faster. It will probably make its way to iOS in iOS1000. XD

Oh wait, easy device to device sharing will never make its way to iOS as uncle Steve do not want people to share content between two devices directly.

Took only 4 posts to get back into the Samsung Apple childish posting behaviour, wow.

Can we please skip all this nonsense, why does every single iPhone thread have to end up in a Apple versus Samsung debate.
I expect better from longtime members of this site.
For your information, half of your Apple gear is SAMSUNG.

Not a chance. The SIII is considered the best selling Android phone, so business-wise it makes sense to compare the two. No need to get all riled up. If you want to call out more "childish" behavior, you should go over to stock market news or analyst sites and tell them to stop being childish for comparing the two. Your assertion is cynical. Competition will always be compared. At least I'm keeping my opinions here on an Apple centric forum versus going to a Samsung forum and spouting drivel, which seems to be the case for many Android users on this site who just can't seem to help but hang around an Apple site and talk down a company and their products. Talk about personality disorders.

As for my own personal comment, it's my own opinion that I think Samsung should get a lesson since they have not yet learned to market their product without being childish themselves, and I'll stick by that. Their ads constantly talk about comparing their product with Apple, but it's a common study that bringing your competition to light in any way is simply free advertisement. That's fine and all, but their ads themselves are quite unclassy and shameful. I seriously do hope they get a taste of iPhone numbers soon enough.

Intentionally obtuse? No I don't think so. I can see why the tech heads or those who just want the latest must have gadget feel the need to rush out and buy a new iPhone every year but not why all the other people do.

I don't need a little computer in my pocket, I spend enough hours a day at my desk in front of my computer to satisfy that need. I can take pictures on my cheap £40 phone. I don't listen to music on the move. Why on earth would I want it to know my GPS co-ordinates? I'm not planning to call in a NATO air strike on the Taliban.

I'm not suggesting it's not a compelling device just like any smartphone is useful to have. What I don't get is why anyone would be willing to pay £700 for it when you can get most of those features on a cheap £50 device.

I think it's great that you're happy with your cheap £50 device. Carry on.

Didn't it take like 94 days for the original iPhone to sell 1 million units?

What apple has done to the established cell phone industry as an outsider in five years may be unprecedented.

That is one of the most boring ideas of the afterlife conceivable. If anyone in the next life is concerned about money and sales numbers back here, the afterlife isn't really worth looking forward to...

Just like Jim Jeffries we all should want to go to hell to get hookers and blow and not an eternal visitation with nana in heaven

Is this all we have to look forward to? Weeks of stories about the iPhone. Apple is rapidly turning into a one product company.

Not really. Major product lines are Macs, iPods, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, plus Apple is running a music/video store and two app stores.

And except for the iPod line, each of their product lines is growing nicely. You can't blame them for two product lines growing a lot faster than the others.

I'm going into AT&T on Oct21/22 when the Note2 comes out. Trying all the new phones and making a final decision after actually seeing and using them IN PERSON.

Let me see and actually hold this amazing iPhone that is the perfect size and those big bad samsung phones that i can't fit into my pocket.

Of course, it's more than just that...but, I think it may be a good time to at least try the Android phones to get a REAL idea of their user-experience. If one day, the iPhone comes out with a satisfactory screen size and is not missing features that may be available on most/some Android phones, then I will look again.

I don't hate the new iPhone, but the latest is disappointing with respect to the current competition. Make two iPhones, and be amazed at those sales results.

Do you think any android phone made uses even a sizable fraction of the development and engineering that goes into an iPhone?

Why would you ever want to settle for half arsed devices that cost the same. Samsung used to close that gap by stealing but now they can't. Having 20'different phones is not a bonus unless they have 20 development teams the size of the iPhone team with the experience to make a superior product

Others you are selling on sku space and marketing spiffs to sales people neither which have anything to do with the product sold

----------

Why compare the sales of the 5 with the S3? Apple has only 1 main phone whereas Samsung is marketing different products for different types of customers. At the end of the day, Samsung is still selling more smartphones than any other company, including Apple.
Well if you compare the experience of every Samsung handset with the iPhone and average then out the iPhone wins by a landslide.

So, you're actually unable to find anything about Macs at MacRumors? You don't have a long attention span, do you?

A company whose major product lines are the iPhone, iPad, iPod and music should devote all its efforts to satisfying a disgruntled geek? What parallel universe do you live in? I don't think I've seen such me centric behaviour since grammar school.

Your pettiness is truly annoying and your hijacking of this thread is regrettable. There are plenty of other threads at MacRumors to discuss what's important to you.

Sometimes the easiest and most simple answer is the right one: It's just fun for people. It's the same reason lots of people will camp out for video game or movie releases. They just have a good time.

For many people, like me, the phone aspect is more of a side feature. I get far more use out of bluetooth media streaming in the car, games, and web browsing. For some people, they may have different priorities where dropping $200+ on a smartphone isn't logical. At the end of the day, it does everything I need it to do very well and has been reliable, so I stick with it.
