out of all the bogus rumors i like this one, but it seams to me that all these rumors are just decoys taking us away from the real deal

hear is to hoping this is not a rumor :D

5-12 Mb/s LTE?

Is that what Verizon calls 4G?

Where we have 4G, the speeds are usually around 40-80 Mbit/s, and that's in the most densely populated areas.

Whoa, that would be crazy fast. Even that's not 4G though. We're probably years away from 4G. Heck, 3G took over a decade to role out.

Interesting theory. Whatever they do re screen sizes, I hope they manage a pixel density such that it avoids 'fragmentation'. You really don't want to start asking developers to create more than a couple of versions of their products.

I've always wanted to see Apple FILL the front panel with the screen. No bezel at all, anywhere. (Well, maybe a VERY thin one.) Create some other option for the 'home' button, have the camera peek through the antenna structure... whatever it takes. If anyone can find a way (yes, these are daunting challenges), it's Apple. Make that whole front surface 'live' and colorful.

Make the device seem like magic. That's Apple's way. They are to electronics what Disney once was to movies and amusement parks. Seamless, magic, fun.
I totally agree with you on this post!

There's no reason a 4-inch display couldn't fit in a device the same dimensions as the curent iPhone. In fact, if my math is correct, a 4-inch screen at 16:9 adds nearly exactly enough vertical space to include an extra row of app icons on the home screen.

Probably will happen down the line at some point.

Will people please give up the 16:9 nonsense?
Its a ratio that works for one thing only (watching movies) and only for a subset of those at that.
It would be horrible in portrait mode and useless for browsing (too narrow vertically and too short/wide in landscape.)
Think folks.

AT&T/Tmobile call their HSPA+ 4G, so everyone is playing fast and lose with the nomenclature. The point is, Verizon's LTE is much faster than AT&T in real world speeds, not to mention lower latency.

I'm not trying to compare networks in other countries as there are many factors that affect their ability to offer high speeds. Where is this 40-80Mb/s network?

Major metropolitan areas in Sweden.

This site is in swedish, but there are graphs you can look at if you're not using google translate or something.

Remember, at WWDC, they put emphasis on 300+ ppi makes it retina. And the iPhone 4's screen is, above "the magic number", 329.65 PPI.

Well, I've done some calculations, as Apple will never make a phone: that's massive, too small, has a slide out keyboard, or not be "retina":

3.5 inch = 329.65 PPI (at 960x640)
3.7 inch = 311.84 PPI
4.0 inch = 288.44 PPI
3.8 inch = 303.63 PPI

I don't think Apple will do 4 inch as it won't be "retina"; however, they could say that, as it's a bigger screen, you hold it further from your face, so it's "retina." A 3.7 or 3.8 inch is more likely.

I don't want the iPhone to be any larger. A phone is supposed to be compact in size. The 4.3" Android phones do not feel like a phone to me. If you want a larger screen get an iPad. I think Apple will release the iPad in a more compact size in the future.

I sure hope this one comes to life. 4" display but with a little more pixels so it stays "retina"

After having a 4 inch screen on my android phone...I can't switch back to the iphone unless they do this. It looks like a little piece of trash. Just sayin'

I hope they do upgrade to a 4 inch...I might just switch back. ;)

Of course they could say that a bigger screen would be held farther from the eye thereby allowing marketing to retain the retina tag at <300dpi.

I like keeping my phone in my pocket and not on my waist. I don't want someone running off with my $700 phone! I can't get jiggy with these huge phones..

its going to be bigger, its going to be smaller, its going to have a keyboard... maybe it will plow a field for you with 4G speeds. who knows. :apple:

For those doubting apple will make a larger iPhone, with a 4inch screen the phone would still be the same height, it could even have a smaller height and still fit a 4 inch screen, then the phone would just be a little wider about .2inch wider, and then there will be more room for parts so it could also be thinner.

Isn't it becoming more obvious. The new phone won't have a Home button and the area for the front camera and earpiece will be much shorter. That way the phone can be smaller and the screen can be bigger. Allowing for "swipe to Home" capabilities or multiple-touch to app switch.

The new slightly smaller phone may be the new iPhone.

Great post and I believe you are correct. Same iP4 form factor with full use of the screen (with the exception of the camera and sensor) with no home button. Once again an ingenious and beautiful design.

I know! I can't believe this website has resorted to posting unconfirmed speculations about Apple products! What is this, some kind of rumor site? If all we're going to hear about are just unconfirmed rumors, they might as well put "rumors" in the name of the website, so people aren't surprised that all we see here are rumors nowadays! What's the world coming to!?

There was a time when "Page 2" was reserved for rumors from unreliable sources or from sources that had no sort of evidence whatsoever to go along with it. I can see giving the WSJ rumors Page-1 because of track record, but the rest of these are a joke. If they don't filter this stuff it just becomes noise.

I agree! The Galaxy S screen shown in the article picture looks so spacious!

Shame it looks like a giant iPhone 3GS rip off.

Then again, that sums up both Samsung and Google ... rip off merchants.

I cannot believe Jobs allowed himself to get done by Schmidt the way he did by Gates back in the 80's.

I'm sorry, and people can throw the fanboi tag around as much as they want, but I just do not see the appeal of Android. HTC, the best skin for the OS still looks so basic next to iOS. Samsungs skin is just drivel, it looks awful.

And as for being "open" and Apple having too many "fart apps".

"Fly On *****". Enough said.

Agree. People complain about the 4:3 ratio on the iPad and its just as stupid. Its not like 16:9 is some magic golden ratio. Many feature films are actually narrower than 16:9. but that wouldn't necessarily make it better for being able to navigate apps with a single thumb.

"Retina" never meant anything. Its not like a scientific principle. Its a marketing tagline they applied to describe that it was very high resolution. Even if they make the same resolution screen at 4", it would still be higher pixel density than the competing 4" screens which are 800x480 resolution, which is 233.24pppi. 4" iPhone would be 24% higher ppi.

Also it would have 60% more total pixels. Intuitively that seems high but check the math. It should be about the square of the advantage in ppi and then actually a little higher than that because the iPhone's 3:2 aspect ratio is closer to a square (more area of screen per diagonal inch).

I think that a 4" iPhone screen could happen because there have been rumors for awhile now about Apple getting rid of the Home button. Without that button, Apple could probably keep the face of the phone about the same size while getting the bigger screen. It also makes sense that they would slightly increase the screen size of the "normal" iPhone if they were going to be releasing an "iPhone Nano" option with a smaller screen.

I don't see it for the 5th generation iPhone. Won't Apple want to get another year out of the form factor they designed for the iPhone 4? Even if the iPhone 4 design is monumentally retarded?

All touch screen phones look alike. A big screen with a plastic/metal body. Get over it.

As much as I'd love a 4" screen, I feel these rumors are to steal MWC thunder and find leaks.

Anytime I see/hear of a rumor so that Apple can better compete with [insert competing product / company], I write off the rumor as false. Apple does not compete against other companies / devices...meaning, the perceived successes of others is not what drives them. They do not engineer / design to copy what others have done. Rather, it's the failures of others to innovate on behalf of consumer simplicity that motivates them. Apple seeks to best their own products...they compete with themselves.

You must be really stupid to believe that. Please tell me that was sarcasm.
If it wasn't then I'm suspecting you're a fanboy. If you are, then go to an Economics class you'll learn that every company needs to compete in the market. And Apple is just like any other company in the market and it needs to compete.
It's not 2009 anymore, the competition has grown fierce with new Android phones coming out practically every other month. Apple needs to make drastic changes to it's iPhone line or it'll lose everything it worked for.

By your logic we wouldn't even have a front facing camera, and we would be stuck with the iPhone 3G. Sounds silly right?
