I feel ashamed that it took 5 pages for someone to calculate the new PPI (dpi) value.

Just in case I did the original Iphone 4 first.

At 3.5 inch, the screen dimensions are calculated 1.92 inches by 2.92 inches giving you a dpi around 328.76ppi to 333ppi. So lets just say 330ppi.

For the supposed 4.0in screen, the screen dimensions are calculated at 2.2in by 3.33in. Giving you a dpi around 288.28ppi to 290.90 ppi. So lets just say 290ppi.

So its 330ppi -> 290ppi

Thanks,

and stay in school kids.

3.5 is the "smaller" 4 is the new "normal"?????

Probably 3.27" like on the Pre or some of the other smartphones. It's smaller, but still large enough to comfortably run the current apps (sure there are exceptions). If you axe the black bezel, you could certainly have a 3.3" iPhone nano and a 4" iPhone 'regular' coexist, as one could be significantly smaller.

A smaller iPhone nano also means the 4" iPhone, rather than retain the current dimensions and make the screen fill the device, can become a tad wider/taller, meaning more components, battery, and thinner profile. All things Apple loves to tout at keynotes.

I think this is very possible.

I like the size as is for the overall phone. I carry it in my pocket. I don't need the phone bigger. If you squeeze in a slightly larger screen into the same form-factor though, that would be OK for me.

Much more reasonable than a lot of the rumors we've been seeing lately.

I think this one is almost a given. They have to do it to stay out in front of Android.

This could be the year Apple fades into the huge shadow cast by Androids ever so rapidly growing momentum. Their sales, and universal appeal are a force to be reckoned with.

Apple's continuos bragging about having the most fart apps is getting old.

God I hope not. Id like my next phone to fit my current case. I also dont need a bigger phone.

This is what i think it will look like. The screen is (3.5/4.0 = 0,875) 87,5% of the the iPhone 4 screen.

Good job on your part, creating this comparison.

Sadly it's more of the same just a slighly different size. Boring!

Sewer Talk..

Aaah Trolls... :D

I used to think 4 inches was too big for a phone until I got a Nexus S after owning an iPhone 4 (switched to a carrier that doesn't support it :( that's why), and 4 inches is definitely the sweet spot. Anything above is overkill for me but 4 is great.

Try extending that additional diagonal screen 'half-inch' with the same screen 'width' but you should find it extends down past the home button...

Actually you can measure it... and it works perfectly in the same form factor...
Retain the top left corner, retain the screen width but measure the diagonal length 4 inches and you'll see it extends to the home button.

3.5" is the perfect size for a mobile display, these 4.3" phones are a trend and too big for the regular consumer. Apple may bump it up to 3.6 or 3.7" while keeping the phone the same dimensions, but that would be as far as they'd go.

Problems with this rumor:
- It would be larger than the current iPhone, when it seems like Apple has progressively been making the iPhone smaller and thinner.
- The screen resolution would have to be the same to make it work with current apps without breaking. *
- Because the screen resolution would be the same, you lose the ability to call it a Retina display. Plus apps will look oversized with giant buttons and essentially make the extra screen size pointless.

* This is not a situation where they can do the easy "2x" trick they pulled with the Retina display.

Possible solutions to the above problems:
- They could remove or shrink the home button, and all the edges on the iPhone to help shrink it doesn't grow that much in size.
- The screen resolution could remain the same, but offer developers the option of supporting the new screen size, and thus shrink their buttons and such down slightly to allow for more use of screen real estate. **

** The only problem with this is that it would cause fragmentation in apps. When a new app comes out, a developer is forced to do a lot more work to support their app on the new screen as well as the old. It's already bad enough that they have to consider the iPad as well.

Overall I would say that a 4 inch screen is not gonna happen. I could see them maybe making it slightly bigger, but not half an inch bigger.

Sorry, but no thanks.

I think the Galaxy S and HTC Desire HD look ridiculous as phones, and remember that while they are pocket computers, they are a PHONE first and foremost.

Seeing people hold these things to their head which look more like small tablets is almost amusing, and no wonder so many owners of these larger phones I see are using hands free kits to take calls.

I don't think Apple is flushing out a leak, I just think after last years debacle they're taking the piss out of the mainstream tech media.

A four inch screen justifies me making the jump from browser to macrumors poster.

Woo hoo!! Four inches baby.

Naming it iPhone 4" might be asking for wiener jokes. Wouldn't expect 4G. Apple cares about battery life specs.

Uh, I did.. it's mocked up there.. It works without increasing the size of the phone at all. I didn't do it the MOST EXACT PRECISE way, but that mock up is extremely close to what a 4in screen would look like slapped on the iPhone4.
