I see "non" myself, but either way it's an embarrassing oversight by Ive. I can only think he must be stretched too thin, as this kind of detail would normally not be missed. Ive is more thoughtful (in a design sense) than that.

I doubt he missed it, he probably just didn't care enough to think of an alternative. To be honest the only 2 possibilities I can think of are 1) cut out a oval for the iPhone "title", or 2) redesign the whole thing. Or well I guess 3) do neither of the above.

All the talk about mold lines on the 5c then they give us this case?

And still using silicone? Of all the materials to use. A dust magnet that will eventually become sticky and loose.

Of course I disagree about the look (because I love polkadots) and I also don't think the polycarbonate is "soft" plastic. But if it starts to scratch then I'll have to pick something else, or just let the battle scars accumulate to prove I really loved the thing by time I gave it up.

You should see the back of my U2 Special Edition iPod. Ain't just the band's autographs on there, I can tell you that. That iPod looks like it went to Iraq and back a few times. I feel zero compulsion to keep stuff looking like it has never been used.

I know it's so uncool to let even the faintest hairline scratch blemish get on one's precious mobile entertainment devices, but really I don't care. So I'll give these dotty cases a go and see what happens!

I'm with you. I don't use a case. I like how the phone feels and I like how the phone is very thin. I have a few slight scrapes and pockmarks, but there is no significant damage, despite my dropping the phone on occasion.

My feeling is that the manufacturer has put the electronics in a case already - to put that case inside another case seems unnecessary (and peculiar) to me.

Yeah, cutting a rounded rectangle for 'iPhone' would've been the most sensible solution without being too jarring.

I have a feeling the 5c will be a dud. If i wasn't going to buy a 5s
I would rather have a 4s based on style and feel. you loose a little in screen size and performance but the fit and finish of the 4s blow the 5c away. Currently the 4s is still being produced and is free with contract.

I still believe Apple is "innovating" but what concerns me is the product cycle is slowing down. You can design a great product but a big part of the success of a product is how soon you can get the product to market. IMO if Apple had brought the 5s to market in April and was now releasing the larger screen iPhone they would be in much better situated to acquire significant increase in marketshare. One of Steve's well documented skills was to push people beyond their limits in order to meet timeline goals. From my perspective I see a looser run ship. Not s good sign!

Agreed. That partial text is one of the things that Steve really wouldn't allow to happen.

whew.

I thought i was the only one who noticed and thought it strange and very sloppy.

I didn't want to criticize before seeing on hand, but from the pics, it looked "cut off" and that isnt good when products are known to pay attention to detail.

While the 5s cases appear to be viable case options, people should seriously consider other 5c cases. Maybe if Apple introduced 5c cases without holes...

all the protection, much less weight. I like the ideas of holes for that. Would have been nice if the article said how many grams they weighed instead of saying just that they're light. my silicon case for the 4s weighs 23 grams, which is a 16.5% increase in weight.

I can't wait for all the complaints about the cases. It's possibly the worst possible design if you don't want any scratches on your phone. All those holes will let in the dirt, dust, sand etc, which will then be pressed up against the phone, scratching it to bits. At least the scratches will be in a nice cheese grater/connect-four pattern, though.

Judging from these hideous cases, it seems Apple could take a dump in a shoebox and sell it for 29.99 and it'll sell. Just wow. Goofy looking Chinese toy colors and an even goofier upcoming ui. Oh well, still the best functioning OS on a phone today and that's why I have one. Won't be buying the the 5s or c, or any other bloody letter. Time to wait for the bigger screen and then jump off the lemming cliff.

It's gonna look worse when the phones come and in addition to "hon" there's a bunch of the FCC notification stuff showing through.

Not making just one hole larger to at least expose "iPhone" is a surprisingly un-Apple-like oversight.

That would look even worse, not to mention draw even more attention to the text underneath. Granted, it's not perfect, but the average 5C buyer is probably not a perfectionist anyway; those consumers buy 5Ss.

Besides, who looks at the back of their phone anyway, and for others, that 'flaw' if not covered by your hand already, is hard to see from any kind of distance.

Every time I see one of these cases or a picture of the 5C, I get the sudden urge to buy an HTC One. Don't make me do it, Apple. I still have faith in you!

They really are trying to reinvent themselves.

Why has everything gone to circles?

They are running around in circles...trying to reinvent themselves.

Also- customers, people, humans... are running around in circles to give up the fruits of their labor to buy things they really don't "need" but think they do for whatever valid or invalid reasons.

Like cattle running around the fenced area.

If I had to guess what kind of farm animal I'd say it's a toss up between a chicken (with no head of course) or a sheep.

Baaaaa!

(Yeah I have an iPhone also... hi Kettle..)

I'm finding it hard to believe that Apple would have done this without a REALLY good reason. Could someone do a mockup of what the case/phone would look like with the word "iPhone" showing? Maybe it resembles Hitler or something.

What is it with people obessing over some letters in "iPhone" being covered up? They're completely missing the forest for the trees because from a distance, no one will notice.

BUT, after Apple's marketing blitz, everyone will see those distinctive colors and circular cutouts and immediately recognize it as an iPhone, even from a distance... no need to see it up close and read the letters.
