Why would there be any shortage when Apple us the same components as the iPhone, which means they must have in stock alot of them. The case is easyer to make and the supply chain can produce alot.

The real deal will be with the iPhone 5S. The apple store will be crashed!

+1.. no demands for the 5C... what a waste of R&D.
Generally..... most people want the latest and the greatest!

Interestingly,A report a couple of months ago showed only about half the total iPhone sales being the newest model(apologies for not having the exact numbers, but it was on macrumors).

So,no.

What is a flop? Only 2-3 million units sold in the first weekend instead of 5 million? A "flop" for Apple seems like a huge success that other companies could only dream of.

Precisely. Everyone holds Apple to an entirely different standard. It's like saying that Michael Jordan had an awful game because he only scored 20 points. It's the same thing we do with Tiger Woods... Of he comes in 2nd or third, he's a failure, but no other golfer is viewed that way, and they'd all be thrilled with a fraction of his success.

Also it doesn't necessarily mean it's the most popular one....maybe Apple also expected it to not be a top seller, so they had fewer yellow ones than other colors? It's just the one that has sold most above whatever projections there were. Also it's interesting that it's an unlocked version that Apple sells out of first....I have a feeling that lots of people are fed up with being slaves to carriers...or I suppose lots are ordering them hoping to sell overseas or something...or again Apple had fewer unlocked that carrier specific ones available.

I originally glossed over the fact that it was an unlocked yellow model that sold out, thanks for pointing it out. I think that could be pretty significant news, but like you said not knowing how many there were to begin with in terms of colors and unlocked/locked makes it hard to say. I'm considering getting an unlocked iPhone 5S for this reason, don't want another 2-year contract.

I like how people on here assume that the device is a failure because the pre-orders are not selling out yet.

Since you all have it figured out, I want one of you to post the number of devices they have available for pre-order this year versus the last 4 years and equate that to sales volume. All you see is a shipping date, not how many have sold versus previous years.

I am also assuming there are people that are considering one, but would like to go see one is person before selecting a model. I will be at an Apple store next Friday to simply see one is person and gain a better understanding of how the phone feels.

Your just making excuses.

People have been seeing the same trend every year when it comes to pre-orders, the successful models see the delivery day pushed out.

Based on the same approach, the 5C is not as popular.

Verizon is still showing a delivery by 9/20. Could be good news for the 5S or bad news. Good news because they may have enough supplies to go around on launch day, or bad news because people are waiting for the 5S rather than the 5C. Hey, at least it will lower the amount of customers buying the 5S, leaving more for everybody else!

Tech junkies and nerds who get stiffies over clock speeds and processing power are waiting for the 5S.

People who like pretty colors on their phone will do the sensible thing -- walk into a store and buy one instead of waiting until 3AM to pre-order one.

This whole thing is eerily similar to the reaction when the iPod mini came out. People couldn't fathom why anyone would pay so much for an inferior product just because it came in different colors. Then, 6 months later, every woman at the gym was jogging with one and the message board crowd was shocked at the sales figures.

Yeah exactly, the 5c is Apple's new iPod mini. I expect the "c" line to ultimately be Apple's largest selling phone in the years to come, and it will do a lot to get more market share for iOS.

It may have less value for somebody who cares about specs, but for people wanting a fashion accessory, it has a lot more value than the 5s. Everyone thought that Apple was making a third world phone, but that's wrong. They were making a first world phone for first world women and children.

Nah Tiger woods is not arrogant enough ;)

Go for that last one. ;-)

I just ordered a screen/digitizer repair kit for the 4s. I'll replace it, that's easy enough to do. I think there may be other issues as well, thus if there are, that will be the end and I can sell it as is for $100 to $150 (as long as the screen works it will sell). But I will then upgrade him to the 5 for $50. While I like the 5s, I think I'll hold out until the next gen upgrade.

But the people this phone would appeal to are probably not ones who would get up at midnight to order. If anything this preorder could be to get data on which colors are popular so Apple can have more stock of that color in stores.

Interesting that the yellow one sold out first. I would have bet good money pink or green. Of course, Apple could have very well have bet the same thing, and simply made fewer yellow ones and a lot more pink and green ones.

I see that Apple is rotating the color of the iPhone 5c on their home page but yellow was the first color I saw after the keynote and it was the only one for a while. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

Maps may have been a problem but SIRI is fantastic. I use it ALL THE TIME and so do most of the people I know.

Last I heard, on iOS 7, Siri's search engine is Bing by default, and to get Siri to search on Google you have to say "on Google." Siri's skills may have developed, but her brainpower will be weaker. Let's hope Apple chills out a little in its war with Android; iOS users are now becoming injured bystanders in the battle.

Has there EVER been a shortage of supply for the previous generation phone when Apple makes a new one?

This is really important. Apple has created a lot of buzz for last year's product, the iPhone 5 aka 5C. I don't think anyone was even thinking about the 4S selling out when the 5 was released. Now, maybe their production levels aren't as high for the 5C as they are for the 5S, but if they are anywhere close, this is a huge win for Apple.

I think people here forget that their are normal people in the world that don't care about having the best iphone out there.... they see the color iphones are are like holy ... and think of all the blue shoes they can match it with haha.. ok that may only be a few like that but still the majority like the colors.. it's just us picky people who need to have the best thing out...

I suspect in the end it will sell well. For people who don't need the latest and the greatest it will be a good update for 4 and 4s user.

The lost opportunity here for Apple is sales to people looking for a lower priced smartphone off contract. But, you can't lose what you never had.

Where is the reason for giggle.
So, you did not write on this site that the 5 would be a disaster?
No problem, perhaps you want to be but you are not the worst

Now, seriously, a yellow phone?
AH!, people ride yellow cars.

The worst color choice for me.
