I checked mine and it's zero on its side and standing up. Laying flat it's +1. So mine seems pretty accurate. Got it launch day.

I used a app called handy level and it says I'm 0.7 off on the side. I guess I should be happy it's not as bad as most people. My wife's iPhone 5 is 0.2 on the side.

Guys, a DFU restore reduced the amount of error I had.

You might want to try to reproduce this, if so this probably means a software fix can solve this problem.

I've seen a few references to refurb units but when I returned my iPhone 4S that was purchased from O2 to the Apple store I got a new unit. It was a white box replacement (just phone no accessories or box) and I had to pay some money for it as it was out of 12 month warranty but it was not a refurb unit. I asked that question and was told it was new and it certainly appeared to be so.

Also, are there really going to be any refurb units at this stage anyway?

White box replacements are refurbs apple may refer to them as "as new" they cant tell u the are brand new because they are not even if the have just been assembled.

Interesting. If that is the case the Apple genius lied to me as she said "it is a brand new phone". Still wondering where this stock of refurb 5s phones are going to come from this soon after release.

They are brand new. That previous person was just not using common sense. You won't get refurb devices for a while now, probably not for around a month and a half or so.

By how much? I did a DFU at initial setup, and I'm at 0 on long side and -3 at short & flat.

My games still require the phone be held at an angle despite long side zero.

-3 on flat reduced to -1 after DFU and set up as new iPhone.

White box will be new. There is no way they have had time to refurb anything yet.

My white box comes Monday. Will let you know.

Anyone with a proper spirit level wants to try a measurement before and after a DFU restore?

I'm no engineer, but I can't fathom how this couldn't easily be fixed with a software calibration.

I'd also like to note that a good chunk of the people who are making a racket about this "issue" would likely never have noticed it if it wasn't pointed out to them.

This is the downside to rapidly advancing technology. The second we stagnate, we fixate. When the tech makers are out of bigger ideas, they start cramming in smaller, fluffier niceties, like compasses and levels. With no big wow factors to distract us, we nit pick the niceties.

I wouldn't have noticed the level being off (mine's off 2 degrees), but the compass is off about 8-10 degrees. It's easy to tell in Chicago where we have a strict grid following north/south and east/west. It's less easy to tell in cities like NYC or Houston where the grid is shifted.

is the 32 or 64 GB flash memory new? are the other components that make that refurb phone not from phones that didn't pass QC. refurb phones are not new they are "as new"

why would you accept a refurb phone ( new or not ) days into buying a device that has a fault?
we are grateful that we have theses phones and pray that one day they will work properly.
apple is the luckiest company in the universe :)

As far as I am concerned refurbs are new or even better from my exp. the casing and screens are new you even get to pull off the plastic just like the new ones. I don't really consider the chips used since they are non mechanical and never touched by the user. If anything they are tested and burnt in so probably more reliable. Chips will long out live the phone.

How about the iPhone5c?

How just wondering if the gyro and compass issues etc, are problems with the iPhone 5c as well?

Also what is the most likely course of action that Apple will take to fix the issues in the near future?

:confused::confused::confused:

No

Only apple knows, and there not talking.

Same here. No phone on one table was good. One was off by double digits.

The guy that examined my phone couldn't believe that every display iP5S was bad including his own. Either this is a software issue or there will be a mass recall.

Has Apple ever had a recall? I would bet that they repeat what Jobs said regarding the 4's antenna: "All smartphones do that." "All measuring devices have a certain amount of deviation" is likely what you'll hear, and that's the line some in this thread are hearing from Apple techs. My wife's 14 days was over yesterday, and we simply returned it last night: -2* lengthwise, compass off by 8-10 degrees, and third party level and compass apps were off as well. We didn't want to hold out hope that Apple would provide a real fix for this, and she's quite happy with her new HTC One. That phone has been out long enough for defects to be found, and I did check the One I bought last week for level and compass functions. They work fine.

DFU does nothing. Just tried it. -4 before, -4 after.

I found iTunes saying " congratulations you phone is now unlocked" after doing a dfu restore on the unlocked 5s I bought from an apple store. did u get that message?
I don't remember seeing that on any of my previous unlocked iPhones. this is the same phone that apple care insisted I didn't buy from apple store.

A refurb phone cannot be new. That much is common sense.

You're thinking of them by the informal term "refurb". The term Apple use is "service unit".

All 5Ss that you get when you swap right now are brand new, just like the retail device you received. As time goes by you'll start getting refurbished devices.

I tried a DFU, made no difference.

-3 on back
-2 on long side
-1 on short side

I'm going to exchange I think and keep exchanging until I get what I paid for.

Will a white box replacement have to go through the entire activation process to access the software, or can they use a dummy sim to at least determine if the gyro is better or worse than my current? I'd like to keep my current if the replacement is crap(pier).

You might be doing that for a long time then, if this issue is as widespread as they say it is.

I'm not sure about this. I would like them to test one for me before they send it out but I don't think they will unfortunately.

If you are within the 14 days should you get brand new?

No. But I got 1.2 gb freed up somehow.
