I don't think that an exchange is going to make any difference as if they introduce a hardware update this week it may take a week or two for new production models to come through. I am going to give it a week or two and see if Apple respond with a hardware or software update.

Agree with this approach. I am gonna play the wait and watch game as well. I have my suspicions on the M7 chip.

I have just been offered the same.

I raised a support call online and then spoke to an Apple advisor on the phone. He escalated to a senior advisor and he has just phoned me back. He said it is a HARDWARE issue and my phone needs replacing. I will take it in to an Appelstore so I can test any replacement before accepting it (as I suspect the ones in-store will all be faulty as well)

I think I will do the same. I have a Genius Bar appointment for Thursday. But I got the phone on launch day (from EE and not Apple) and I will be outside the 14 days period. Do I need a GB appointment or would they swap it without seeing the Genius (but I want the replacement tested too)? I am not in a hurry, but don't want any surprises either.

I agree, which is why I have booked a Genius appointment. If they can find me a 5s that reads 0 then I will be happy. I suspect they won't, in which case the ball is back in their court.

My 14 days ended yesterday. I have been checking inventory at my local store through http://iphone-check.herokuapp.com but no store on that lust of many ever has my model in stock. Guess I will just have to wait and see what Apple does. I sure hope they issue some kind of a "we're working on a fix" statement! If it turns out to be software, then a fix will be easy enough as I otherwise love the phone. If it turns out it is a hardware issue, surely Apple will have to replace the bad units. Of course, the other option is Apple remains in denial and ignores the issue.

BTW, I really think they need to rename their sales and tech associates and drop the term "Genius". Every time I've ever been in the store and have mentioned an issue, like this one, I get the very same response that 99.5% of users all seem to get...."I haven't heard of that issue"! Really?!?! Even though every major tech website has run articles and tests? Even though business websites, like Forbes, has had lengthy articles about the issue?!?! They should instead call it the "Clueless Bar"! Do these people NOT use the internet or do research?!?!

Of course, I know that 99.5% of the time the Apple "Clueless" is lying and they are towing the Apple training line of benign marketing sales speak, but at times that attitude strikes me as so disingenuous. I prefer doing business and giving my dollars to firms with integrity and genuine sincerity. So c'mon Apple, restore my faith and put some shine back on the apple.

I was at my local Apple store and checked out the display models. They were all over the place, off to varying degrees on their back and different sides. Out of 10 phones not one was perfect.

Same here. No phone on one table was good. One was off by double digits.

The guy that examined my phone couldn't believe that every display iP5S was bad including his own. Either this is a software issue or there will be a mass recall.

Got my phone first day so decided to return it and wait for a software/hardware fix and then buy another. For now my 4S will do:)

I thought about returning my phone. I was told that all white boxed phones are new. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes they would be. A lot of the White boxed phones were issued with the first delivery batches to the stores as direct replacements for faulty units.
I wouldn't rely on any of those being issue free with the sensor problem though as they will be early builds

Better don't think about returning now. I've bought one yesterday, which was produced in week 39:
Five degrees off, too.
I checked 10 5s in Apple Store MTZ (near Frankfurt) and all of them were off between 2 and 7 degrees.

I'm hoping this is a software math glitch related to the 64-bit processor. If it's a hardware glitch, it will be pretty much unfixable via software without adding some kind of calibration settings and that's assuming that it's off by a fixed (non-logarithmic) amount.

I feel like my 5c is off as well. When I lay it on flat surfaces it's slightly off. Has this been reported on the 5c?

Been wanting to get my hands on a 5S recently but I'm going to just hold out and see if Apple fix this issue. I'm glad I decided not to buy on launch day this time around. I'm happy to wait another month or so before buying. Plus, it gives me a bit of extra time to save up a bit more money for the 32/64GB model and also my phone tariff doesn't end for another month and it only has 250MB data limit which would be useless on a smartphone like the iPhone!

So it's just a waiting game now! Your move :apple:

You Do Know to Tap??

Do all of you realize that if you tap the screen on a known level surface the phone re-calibrates to zero???????? Thinking many do not know this.

Really? I think you might be on to something, no-one in this 742-post thread had thought of that.

iPhone 5s accelerometer/gyroscope/compass values incorrect

Do all of you realize that if you tap the screen on a known level surface the phone re-calibrates to zero???????? Thinking many do not know this.

It sets the displayed number in the Compass app to 0, but you'll notice the actual line is still way off, so it's not really calibrating anything. It's a way of measuring angles.

That doesn't recalibrate, it just sets the level (e.g. if you wanted to match that angle elsewhere).

This is described here: http://help.apple.com/iphone/7/#/iphb5af8af5e

My 5s normally shows -1 when flat. If I tap the screen, it shows 0, but then when I turn it around 180 degrees it shows -3.

Even if this was a way of calibrating the app (which it isn't it's a way of comparing angles) it is irrelevant as the app isn't the issue. This problem affects anything relying on the gyro such as racing games for example. Calibrating a single app doesn't address the underlying issue.

Yes, that is known. It's good for when you want to measure relative angle between two different orientations, but useless if you want to measure whether something is actually level - like when hanging a picture.

5s vs 4S on flat surface. Edge readings of 5s are 1deg off while 4S is 0.

if u bought from EE then only EE can exchange for a retail unit within 14 days. if u go to apple u will get a refurb unit 14 days or not. if u accept the refurb unit then u cannot return to EE even if still with 14.

refurb units are not necessarily bad.

internal components not necessarily new!

check out the big brain on brad :)

I've seen a few references to refurb units but when I returned my iPhone 4S that was purchased from O2 to the Apple store I got a new unit. It was a white box replacement (just phone no accessories or box) and I had to pay some money for it as it was out of 12 month warranty but it was not a refurb unit. I asked that question and was told it was new and it certainly appeared to be so.

Also, are there really going to be any refurb units at this stage anyway?
