If you look a few pages back you'll find all the info about the new sensors used in the 5s.
Apparently they were replaced with lower resolution than the ones in 5/5c for the sake of power consumption. So basically your 5c uses the better, more expensive ones found in the 5.

This is a well known issue. Tim Cook may have Apple fix it, he seems to have good integrity and no fear of honesty. Slowly but surely he seems to be improving Apples culture to one that faces their issues instead of spending so much time in denial. I don't think Cook would hide from a problem like Antennagate which only made things worse. Jobs thrived on confrontation. Cook does not.

I don't think that comparing it to a Antennagate is that fair tbh - that was a design issue that only affected users that held their phone in an (arguably) awkward way. In other words the issue could have actually been debated, and the bumpers were released as more of a goodwill gesture. This on the other hand appears to be straight hardware issue, rather than a design issue. The user has no control over this. It's either broken or not, fixable with software or not. There's no way to skirt around the issue, hence why I think it won't be subject to the same denial, and not directly comparable.

Jobs was the master of spin in a very convincing manor. He made you and others actually believe his every word. Conversely those of us who knew how to hold a cell phone after years of experience, could see right through the sales pitch. Antennagate was real- very real. Witness what a big deal Apple made about the new antenna in the 4S. My 4S would make calls in places my iPhone 4 was useless.

Ah so in other words, you're not capable of having a reasoned discussion. Gotcha. Stopped reading about half way through.

Anyone have white box replacement success in the past 24hrs with all "zeros?"

The problem with white box replacements is, there is a high probability that a lot of them are manufactured the same time as the first batch retail shipping ones.

Think about it, they are shipped to the Apple Stores at roughly the same time so in case customer's have a 'bad' one. Perhaps even earlier than the ones we got, which was shipped from China straight to our door steps.

For replacement wise, I'd prefer to get a new retail boxed one. Worse case, same manufacturing time as the one it's replacing, but more than likely, newer batch. (And you keep your option to return it)

I know, I know, and I agree :). I'm just a bit impatient I suppose. I was a "launch day phone" and was hoping maybe a few WB's were from a more recent batch. It'll be interesting to see if 7.0.3 rumored for next week even touches this.

I had a white box replacement last Sunday because of a temperamental sleep button. My replacement phone is no better. That's why I have an appointment with a genius today. I am going to get a refund, switch back to my 5 and wait to see what Apple do to fix this problem

I'm no engineer, but I can't fathom how this couldn't easily be fixed with a software calibration.

I'd also like to note that a good chunk of the people who are making a racket about this "issue" would likely never have noticed it if it wasn't pointed out to them.

This is the downside to rapidly advancing technology. The second we stagnate, we fixate. When the tech makers are out of bigger ideas, they start cramming in smaller, fluffier niceties, like compasses and levels. With no big wow factors to distract us, we nit pick the niceties.

Thanks for the info! As time passes, I bounce back and forth with letting it bother me or not. I guess I'm just an anal SOB, as I think at this moment, it officially bothers me lol. Racing games were a PITA, and I'm one of the "nerds" that does use the level. If 7.0.3 makes me waffles and bacon, all will be forgotten. :)

Surely if this isn't fixed with an iOS update Apple will have to honour customers 1 year warranty, whether they have AppleCare+ or not? They will be obliged to fix or refund if the customer isn't happy.

I don't know If this is a hardware or software issue, but I don't think the fix is simple either way.

If I lie my 5S on its left side on a level surface, the built in level app shows a 1 degree slant. If I flip the phone over and lie it on its right side, it now shows a 6 degree slant! Upside down, it's 1 off, right side up it's off by about 4. That makes absolutely no sense. It also means that it can't just be calibrated changing the values by a constant. It depends on orientation.

On it's back, it's off 4 degrees. I don't know if the compass is off or not, because the compass has never been accurate on any iPhone I've had. My 4S would jump widely around and my 5S does the same thing.

Don't forget the volume buttons affect the level

Good point. I moved the phone so the volume buttons were off the edge of the table and the slant dropped to 4 degrees. I also noticed, when on its back, rotating the phone around caused a reported slant of between 1 and 4 degrees. So despite the buttons, it's still wrong, just not as bad.

Just getting a refund in the apple store now. The genius guys haven't heard of this issue and haven't had anyone coming in complaining about the problem as yet. It makes me wonder as to how many users will know or care about this.

Just so confused about what to do now! Return or exchange!

I don't think that an exchange is going to make any difference as if they introduce a hardware update this week it may take a week or two for new production models to come through. I am going to give it a week or two and see if Apple respond with a hardware or software update.

I have been offered a replacement but am unsure whether to go with it.

I have 2 days until my 14 days is up. Now I have logged the fault would they exchange outside of this period?! Very confused as to what to do.

Ask if they have any retail ones in stock. Get a refund and then buy another one

I have just been offered the same.

I raised a support call online and then spoke to an Apple advisor on the phone. He escalated to a senior advisor and he has just phoned me back. He said it is a HARDWARE issue and my phone needs replacing. I will take it in to an Appelstore so I can test any replacement before accepting it (as I suspect the ones in-store will all be faulty as well)
