Given that you can't play most racing games (any of them that don't offer in-game calibration) that use the accelerometer for steering, that does render the phone rather useless.

You can play them by tilting the phone a little more. Even so, it doesn't render "the phone useless." At best a court would award damages based on reduced functionality. It's difficult to see how it would be a significant sum since the phone has so many intended uses, such as telephony, internet, music, etc. If the screwed up version of Maps last year hasn't resulted in any significant lawsuits, it's difficult to see how this would.

I just tried iHandy Level in a couple places and it looks like the amount off can vary from -0.1 to -0.4 (as seen in the attached pictures).

thanks again.

if you are bored tomorrow, keep the pictures, put the phones in the exact same spots and see if the readings are the same. this will check for drift. I don't have pics but readings changed within 0.5, the girlf has forbidden me from doing any of this anymore :)

This issue, is not exclusive to the iphone 5s or the M7…

A lot of iphone 5c experience the exact same issues… I already opened a thread regarding the iphone 5c.

Thing is that since iphone 5s and iphone 5c share this issue, that leads me to believe it is a software issue.

And the fact that the iphone 5 that shares the exact same hardware with iphone 5c does not appear to have this problem, then that must mean that apple can and will fix this with a software upgrade/patch.

Well inquiring minds want to know, do the new replacement phones have proper levels?

One appears to be normal while the other is off by 1 degree, but since the guy claimed it will be fixed with software I just let it be. I had already been there for an hour so I wasn't about to make a continued fuss. I figure it is better than the 4-6 degrees it was off by before.

That being said, some people have stated that it appears okay when they leave the store but after a few hours of the phone being on it gets worse. I don't know how true that is but we will see.

In any event, like others have said, while I am not going to build a house based on the leveling tool of the iphone, it is a shame if certain games can't be played properly because of the issue.

I hope it gets sorted soon :)

Ha! My wife is about the murder me with spoon if I keep messing with this phone/issue!

Saw my accelerometer slowly drifting over the course of minutes as it sat on edge... That will make it hard to play games, for sure..

It's not going to be a hard fix. Accelerometers/compass are pretty simple electronics. There is very little that can go wrong inside the AK8963 chip that would cause a problem reading. These chips are tested right outside the factory with their own hardware which leads me to believe it's just an M7 firmware issue. Luckily the firmware can easily be rewritten via software update since the M7 is a programmable NXP ARM processor. Seeing that from the teardown, the compass and accelerometer are two different pieces of hardware, and they're both incorrect. There really isn't any other explanation other than an M7 bug. The chips pipe information directly into the M7 from the sensors while the A7 is asleep.

Sure, just like the iPhone 4 never dropped calls. All you had to do was hold it without covering the band! Simple! There will NEVER be any court cases or anything like that.. Ohhh wait!

Seriously, this argument is bunk. The iPhone 5s has issues. It could EASILY be argued that it was falsely advertised as having super special sensors etc etc with the M7, and it doesn't deliver. You don't need to defend Apple.

My compass calibration is stuck and no longer working, compass is frozen and pointing north, but orientation on apple maps is fine, the level apps is still reading -4 on a level surface, already try turn it on/off and also a hard reboot, strange.

If your iPhone 5S is defective in your eyes then return it. If you are beyond your return period then you probably didn't notice the problem until you read about it here... that's your fault.

This will probably be the one big reason why Apple will fix it. If people stop buying games because of this problem, it will affect the bottom line. And when it comes to the bottom line, the bottom line is more important than anything else. They will not sit idly buy and lose money from their golden goose. The app store.

Spread the word

We need to get the word out there to the media in order to get any response or fast action from Apple.

Email and or tweet your news station such as @cnntech .

Maybe then they'll speak......

There's a merchantability standard under the US, as well. However, Apple doesn't advertise the phone as being fit for purpose as a precision compass or level...

Well, according to their own website, it's the only thing I'll need to get my bearing...

And, for extra fun, here's what the user manual says you can do...I guess, in all fairness to Apple though, Apple must have a different definition of what the word "level" means...because if I tried to use my phone for the examples they have in the user manual the end results would not result in anything I, or Websters, would consider even close to "level"!

If you want to launch a class action lawsuit in a state court in Mississippi, be my guest. :D

Even at 6 degrees off, I'm sure I'd get the gist of the directions.

At the end of the day, the iPhone 4 was sold for a good 3 years after 'AntennaGate" and they never changed the design. They gave away some cheap bumpers for a few months, but that was it. Anyway, Apple in the Tim Cook era is a lot MORE willing to admit flaws. Steve Jobs would have said that your table is holding your iPhone wrong.

I'm not saying I don't want a working level or gyro. What I am saying is that any attorney who sees a pot of gold is about as likely to find a gold iPhone 5s at 5th Avenue tomorrow morning and then use a lottery number app to win Wednesday's Powerball as he is to actually win such a case.

This has all the makings of a software fix. It really hasn't caught the attention of the media yet. They're still trying to give themselves vertigo from all the animations.

A bug,I believe. Settings - Compass - True North - Turn off. Kill the app, relaunch, all should be well.

Received my silver 64 gig 5S today from T-mobile.
I can confirm: good units do exist. It shows perfect zero on all sides, even my 5 is off by 1 degree sometimes being next to it.
I don't even know now. It looks like either it's the bad calibration on some units at the factory or they are using multiple suppliers and some of them produce faulty sensors.

What week was your new iPhone manufactured? Also you may test it again in a few days as some have said it drifts and gets worse over time.

My Week 36 iPhone 5s (Space Gray) is giving me the same readings as my friend's iPhone 5 and my old iPhone 4S.

C3
Week 37.
By the way, I have been testing another one that belongs to a friend of mine and it didn't drift for the past week at all.

It's interesting to watch this slowly becoming common knowledge...

Unfortunately still *crickets from Apple.

Any updated responses from the folks 30 pages ago who we're saying this was a non-issue & that we were complaining about nothing?

U can really tell there is something off in this 5S model. There are other glitches too and we could use a firmware/software update ASAP!

I will state again this is my first problem ever with an iPhone - I've had every model they've made. Very in tune with the product.
