Because you guys are stressing over a level 2 out of 10 issue
Actually the only one stressing around here seems to be you. Relax, mate, we're just having some fun analyzing erratic behavior of some sensors. Nothing to get worked up about.

Most of the comments here are about the grey and white 5s because right now the grey to gold iPhone 5s is probably 1:20. The gold iPhone 5s has the same problem, the comment under yours is actually about a gold iPhone 5s not being leveled.

Yup saw after my comment, hope they wont do as Antennagate, trying to update IOS to get a more accurate reception and then finally Steve jobs said its hardware and the only solution is too hold your phone differently or put a bumper on it.

My thoughts are : how did Apple let this issue pass thru its lab tests and thru factories with no sampling tests. They dont have quality tests on units during production ........ Or their test benchs were faulty as well :)

Unfortunately he will not answer you as he's only just trying to get people excited. He only has 1 post and as others have said he is BSing us. I was just merely clearing this up for you.

Its a public forum. And i just asked to clear the confusion in my mind. If you dont want the answer then you could have ignored it instead of pin pointing.

Here is a clear message to Apple.

Since the issue is wide spread, and just about no one will get a trouble free replacement, why not just send it back, get your money credited returned, and that will send a very clear message to Apple regarding this. I bet they will respond faster. However, human nature as it is, the troubled iphones will not go back for a return, and Apple will carry on as usual.

They probably didn't test it till after they produced a couple million and at that point it was to late to stop production and fix it because of all the iPhone demand. Or they already knew it was a software problem but didn't have enough time to apply the patches before the phones started shipping.

1. Got a genius bar appointment booked in for Saturday in the Milton Keynes Store (UK)

2. 14 day online return period expires Monday.

What to do?

1.Get a replacement from store (as I don't have any intention of actually getting a refund because I love the phone and all is else is perfect). Do you think they will let me test the gyro issue with the replacement before I accept it? I'm currently happy with the condition of mine as its perfect without any blemishes or anything so am concerned accepting a replacement that maybe be 1 degree better but have cosmetic blemishes etc .

or

2. Call apple online on Monday (this being my last day to contact them) and order an express replacement with the hope they send a blemish free replacment without any gyro issues like our fellow forum memeber mercenary received (who happens to live in the same town as me) :)

Thanks in advance!

I was in the same position and did visit the genius bar earlier in the week. After discussing the sensor and other issues (mine also had a sleep/wake rattle) I was advised to return the unit for full refund rather than take a "as new" replacement.

I therefore requested a refund and UPS collected the unit. Interestingly the USP guy said "let me guess a new iPhone" when he saw the plain brown box. He said they had collected a lot of units for return to Apple and was curious about what was wrong.

I'll wait a while and if things are sorted I'll order a new unit.

People don’t want to hear that. They don’t want to wait for a fix. They want their “precious”.

Proof that this is a real issue!!!!

Camera+ just got a great update and is getting rave reviews. One review I was reading on Zite states "A feature introduced just previous to Camera+ 4 was Horizon, a level that is displayed within the viewfinder window to provide a visual queue of whether the iPhone is being held straight. For most apps, it’s a nice feature to have but for Camera+, it’s a necessity which I’ll discuss later."

Unfortunately it is useless on most of the iPhone 5S's. The first pic here shows what the scene would look like using the faulty stabilizer. The second pic is ignoring it and lining it up with my balcony. The level display is the white bar at the bottom of the middle box if you have not used the app before.Unfortunately in the real world people may not always have a balcony or horizon to compare to and the level comes in very handy. Mine is off 3 degrees when holding the phone in landscape. The iPhone 5S has the best camera yet on an iPhone and one major feature of one of the best camera apps yet is useless.

But hey I will email the developer to see if they can include a user calibration for the app that will stick. Hopefully I can calibrate it to my balcony and it will save in the app lol.

I'm heading the same way. The "point of no return" for my 5S is next Tuesday. I ordered 5S case at the same time as the 5S and I have already requested a refund and got UPS booked to collect that (it had an earlier return deadline).

I'm seeing a genius tomorrow. I'm not going to accept a white-box replacement as I'm still in the 14 day return window and the phone was faulty when I got it (and I want the phone serial number to match the box when I come to resell it). If by any chance they have a fully working retail replacement I will take it, but that is very unlikely.

I like my 5S as it is a significant upgrade from my 4S. However I do expect it to work as advertised (and as described in the manual) which is doesn't. There is no certainty that a software update will fix this, so the safest thing to do is to return the phone for a refund and then wait to see what happens. That will probably mean I will now wait until the iPhone6 comes out!

Thank you for showing this is not an imaginary problem or a non issue. This affects more than just games.

Don't accept the white box replacement. When I visited the Genius, she said she would record my iPhone as DOA and would give me a brand new iPhone as I was still within the 14 day return period.

Thanks for the info, great find. I use this App but haven't tried the updated version yet. An option to self calibrate would indeed be nice. I'll also contact the designer. Cheers!!

Apple keeps making careless mistakes like this, you may have to wait for the iphone 20s in order to get one that's problem free and acceptable. iphone 3g had proximity sensor problems, iphone 4 had signal antenna problems, iphone 5 had touch screen rapid response issues and now this. I'm not sure about the others for I personally didn't own one.

I don't think an apple store will replace a unit bought online with a retail unit.

I bought from the online Apple store and was only offered an "as new" white box at the Apple retail store genius bar. The Apple retail store wouldn't allow me to return the phone to the retail store and said I should arrange UPS to collect it using the Apple on-line store return option.

Other retailers appear to be able to cope with returning products purchased from their on-line operation to a store but not Apple.

I got the 5S from Smartone (local provider in Hong Kong) on the 20th of September.

(chipmunk site)
Nice Name: iPhone 5s
Family name:
Group1: iPhone
Group2:
Generation:
CPU speed: 1.3GHz
Screen size: 4 inch
Screen resolution: 1136x640 pixels
Colour: Space Gray
Production year: 2013
Production week: 36 (September)
Model introduced: 2013
Capacity: 64GB
Memory - flavour: xx
Factory: C3 (China)

The inclinometer was reading -3 degrees on a flat table with my 4 & 5 both reading zero. When I flipped it to the side and had it vertical it reads -2. The funny thing is that it then reads like -56 when I put it flat on it's back again! I had it changed on the 9th of October. The replacement unit has the following details;

Nice Name: iPhone 5s
Family name:
Group1: iPhone

Generation:
CPU speed: 1.3GHz
Screen size: 4 inch
Screen resolution: 1136x640 pixels

Production year: 2013
Production week: 36 (September)
Model introduced: 2013
Capacity: 64GB
Memory - flavour: xx
Factory: DN (China, Chengdu - Foxconn)

Reads zero on a flat table and the compass readings are within 5 degrees of both my 4 and 5. I restored it twice, just to see if it would change anything and it still provides readings very close to my 4 & 5 and consistent zero inclinometer readings on a flat surface.

I asked the Smartone repair guy if the unit is new, he said that he couldn't tell me because as a matter of policy, Apple doesn't tell him, but stated that nearly all the phones were finished in Aug/Sept so they're all "new". I had the strange feeling that Apple was prepared for someone like me since it took Smartone only 30 minutes to have a look at my phone before calling me in to get a replacement unit. The policy of most telcos here is that they'll only provide replacements after you send it in to the repair centre for a thorough check up. I would hazard a guess (pure speculation here) that Apple knew about this well before launch but by that time it was too late since they would have manufactured the 5S ready for sale, in the millions. However they managed resolve the issue and make "sufficient" defect-free units in case they get complaints of which they would have estimated to be on the low side since most couldn't care less if their compass or inclinometer didn't work properly anyway.

Unfortunately, phones manufactured after 20th of September (week 39&40) still have this issue.

I think every iPhone I've had (4, 4s, and 5) has had issues with screen rotation, which I think works off of the gyrothingie... You kind of have to bump the phone to get it to rotate...

Remember this guy? He got sued for something like this.

Now I would like to introduce the members of the class action law suit against apple for this messed up iphone gyroscope issue:

The rabbit (and the other animals) got it the other way round though. Can't get a decent consistent error & no red eye correction...
