5s space grey 16gb here. Mine reads -3 on its back, -1 on each side

Went to the apple store for a genius appointment on thursday (Montreal). The genius seemed to be aware of the issue as he himself said he knew most of the 5s had this condition. He said they couldn't replace my phone as this was almost guaranteed this was software related and that a software update fixing this would surely come out soon..

He said he didnt know when the update would come out but that it should be fixed within one month.. He and another genius proposed to do the 90min do not disturb thing. I told them that i did do it and that it dit not improve at all.

The genius then admitted to previously exchanging other phones that had a similar issue but that were off to as much as -40 degrees!

So anyways I left, pretty annoyed that they couldn't do anything about that and headed downstairs to test the display phones. First of all we can see that they were all off at the exception of the only 4s on display. One of them was even -58 degrees off, straight out of calibration!

These pictures were taken with my 5s, and you can see how the gyroscope affects the orientation of the first two pictures. They were taken with the phone almost flat horizontal in the air, but still definitely in portrait mode instead of landscape. They display as landscape pictures.. The third pic was taken at an angle that was clearly landscape, so that one works..

Am I correct in thinking the gyro issue effects all normal photos too? Not just pano's?

38 DNP -2Flat 2long 0short

Mines a wk38 DNP with -2 flat, 2 long and 0 short. Apps with calibration fix the error and stay calibrated. I would prefer that the phone had global calibration but I can live with my phone the way it is even if it never gets fixed - I really like this phone.

Shit0la! I have a DPN space grey on the way week 39. Hopefully it will be perfect.

I doubt it.

Has week 41 come out yet? I'd be curious to see what percentage of phones from week and location have the problem.
Mine Does:

Production week: 38 (September)
Colour: Space Gray
Capacity: 32GB
Factory: DN (China, Chengdu - Foxconn)

The GPS works fine so normal photos will be okay.

Panorama is screwed up as the phone uses the orientation to stitch together the shot, so ground will look curved if the level is off. The phone will also complain you aren't following the line.

Reading the last 10 pages or so it seems like the problem is mostly on the C3 serial version while the D serial (foxconn) seems to be ok. Is this correct ?

No, that is not correct. My original was a C3 and off by -6. My white box replacement is DN off by -2 (actually closer to -3). Others with non-C3 factory code have also reported errors, so the problem is not definitely not limited to the C3 factory code.

Thanks for the info

Mercenary,

I'm going to be ringing apple tomorrow for a express replacement like you did but just wanted to find out if I should go to apple care first to log it or straight through to online sales support? Tomorrow is day 14 so need to make sure it's processed.

Thanks in advance

He was talking about the Gyro, not the GPS. And i'm pretty sure he IS right. The gyro does affect the normal pictures for example on the orientation they show up on your phone when you watch them versus the actual orientation you've taken them. The phone seems to sometime mistake portrait/landscape orientation..

see above.

The fact that you can't take a decent photo renders one of the phones major functions as being useless.
Are all new phones coming out of the factories this week recorded as week 41's

Ok yes, the gyro is used for normal photos, but if your phone can't tell if it's horizontal or vertical, meaning the level is off by over 45 degrees, then you have a major problem and I'd assume swapping the phone would be necessary as most basic apps like Mail and Safari wouldn't even work.

Can anyone help me In testing pano pictures that illustrate that the sensors are off? What should it be doing? Also does it only affect pano or normal pics too? Thanks

Panorama pictures work fine. I took a few this weekend, and my phone is off by about 4 degrees. I could not see anything wrong with the pano pics.

When I was taking my panorama pictures as I panned, my iPhone kept telling me I needed to move my phone lower (when I had the phone steady).

I tried taking photos whilst placing the camera on a turntable and as rotated the turntable, the same issue happened (phone kept telling me I needed to move the phone lower).

As a result, the end photo is actually distorted.

iPhone 5s accelerometer/gyroscope/compass values incorrect

Here is one I took normally, just holding and moving it.

I don't think it looks crooked or distorted.

Pano works for me too. oddly, when I stand phone on vertical, it is only off by 1 degree, while laying flat or on side it is off by 3 degrees. So that is probably why pano works for me, as it is only off by 1 degree, and I rarely can keep arrow exactly on line when doing pano and a 1 degree error does not affect it much.

Thanks for all the above comments everyone, looks like its different for us all.

I suppose the this whole gyro issue basically has the worst effect on the actual level / compass apps and certain games but that's about it.

Either way that still warrants a replacement / fix considering how much we have all paid for a 100% working device!

Here is my panorama shot. Unfortunately it is not of anything exciting as I was at home when doing my test.

Most of the shot is not too bad, but the distortion was visible when looking at the wooden bench on the porch. The line is not straight and curves when my phone was telling me I should be moving the phone down.

I attach a normal photo from the same location to show that the line is straight.

Maybe the distortion is normal for a panorama shot, as I usually only take panoramas of scenery where there are no straight lines to compare against.

Curving of close up objects is to be expected if the focal point is in the distance. That's the nature of panoramic photos where a 3D semi-sphere is being made flat. I see the same thing in pano photos I took on iPhone 4S under iOS 6.

From what I can tell pano doesn't seem to care about the x and y axis (left or right tilt) it only cares about z (forward and back tilt).

As long as the white area in the level (ignore the number) doesn't change in size if the phone is placed standing up with the home button at the bottom and spun around, the pano photos should come out okay.
