Fixed!!!

After updating my iphone 5s I am glad to inform you that now it reads 0 on all sides!! :D

Really? People are allowed to do whatever they want with their own money, and they are protected by consumer laws and regulations against companies that sell sub-par products. And with all the history of bad products big corporations sell us nowadays (even Apple's antennagate) you should't blame the buyers.

And to talk about patience when there is so much money involved (think up to 900 euros up front for an unlocked device) it just shows how little you understand the situation.
I for one wouldn't have got an iPhone if they wouldn't have fixed it - top quality and premium service matter for me, and even so I had about 2k euros blocked in the bank for almost a month since I ordered the phones till they refunded the money.
I couldn't afford to take a risk worth that much money, and have patience missing the 14 day return period.
I am not happy at all and I fail to see where my fault is.

If there is a lesson to be learned, Apple should learn that communication is very important and this whole situation costed them a lot in returned and replaced devices - that if you want to cry on a big corporation's shoulder. And it all could have been fixed with an internal memo to all the Geniuses instructing them to tell customer this is a software problem and it will be fixed shortly.

I second that!
I understand that Apple tries to enhance the PR effect by having a certain secrecy about their upcoming products. I totally get it.
But I don't understand why they didn't publish an official statement about this issue or at least an internal memo to all their support hotline people and geniuses that there is a fix on the way.
I just ordered an replacement because nobody knew anything when I talked to them and even presumed a hardware error - which I would not have liked.

Instead they are sending replacements - which is basically a good thing - but they were mostly unnecessary...

I - myself - dont want to give them the power to decide what to do with a faulty product (I don't care if it is software or hardware) when I just spent 900 EUR. For top money I expect top quality. If it were some 200 EUR LG smartphone I probably would not have given it too much attention.

BTW:
I have 2 iphone 5s here (replacement overlap) and still could not update. so I dunno if it is fixed yet. But I have good hopes...

Oh I understand the situation perfectly well, but these people (you?) couldn't even wait for a software update. NOPE, its a hardware fault! Take it back! This ones faulty as well, take it back again! rant on forums!

All you needed was a little patience. Its nothing to do with spending a lot of money on a premium product. Apple became aware of the issue and worked to adding the fix into 7.0.3. Thats it. No big ordeal. It was just a software issue. Surely waiting for a software update is a simple enough thing to do. Its not like there were 10 updates and the problem still persisted. A little patience would serve you well (and probably reduce stress meaning you'll live a little longer too).

It seem you don't understand it at all. I was at the end of my 14 day return period and I couldn't gamble that much money on the assumption (mind you, no official word from Apple) that a software update will fix it.

Wow, I came on here expecting bad news but it seems that 7.0.3 has fixed the issue or at least improved it by a good bit.

I'll be picking up a 5S this week...of course that's if my local store has any in stock!!

And for the people who returned it and got a white box replacement I lol if that did happen :p Im happy ...gonna hang pictures now:cool:

Dude you jumped the gun. Simple as that. The reason we didn't get a big announcement from Apple is because outside of a vocal minority on forums it wasn't a huge issue to the majority of iPhone 5S users.

They simply fixed it in a software update. If it were me, Id honestly be feeling really stupid right now had I made loads of genius appointments, missed work, spend money on fuel, and gotten myself all worked up.

You have a years warranty, its all good.

What's a white box replacement?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's a replacement device that Apple gives you. It'll be a brand new phone but it won't come in the iPhone box like it did when you bought it. After some time the replacement devices will be refurbished models. The only reason that it's a brand new device is because Apple hasn't refurbished any 5S models just yet since it only released over a month ago.

Exactly. Oh and I have had a few white box replacements in my time (probably refurbs) and they are indistinguishable from new (the glass and rear shell are always brand new anyway).

-1 on front and back :(

0 on sides though...

bugs me, but not a deal braker...

compared with gf's iphone 5

lol, the warranty is for a full year. Unless you were considering dumping the 5S for another phone then the 14days point is unnecessary.

Ah..that's what I got when I replaced mine, but it was because of what I thought was a faulty fingerprint sensor, not the accelerometer. The Genius told me it was brand new. No way I was accepting a refurbished unit on a 10 day old 5s.

I wasn't entirely sure because I can't ever remember getting a replacement iPhone in a white box! Maybe it's just a US thing or it's because I haven't had to replace an iPhone since early 2012.

Yeah, refurbished models, I believe, have a brand new screen/casing and battery but everything else is reused from old devices. The replacement device looks brand new. You'd never know it was a refurb unless you checked the serial number or something (I think).

you chose not to return it or make appointments, thats great. But to call him stupid for wanting a 700$ device to work as advertised and spending his own time to try and do his part in seeing what can be done, is ridiculous.

so yeah hindsight is 20/20 for him, me, you, and everyone.

Since you are here on this message board, and this specific thread, prob means you spend a little too much time obsessing over your apple toys just like the rest of us.

I laughed when I read that the software update fixed the gyro issue.

The raging and stamping of feet on this thread has been epic. Returning phones even though they are still really hard to come by at the moment. All that spent rage and wasted time, genius appointments, trips of 100 miles to the nearest apple store etc.

Hopefully this will be a lesson to a lot of people. Have PATIENCE. Thats the problem with people today, everything has to happen instantly and if it doesn't, toys are thrown out of the pram.

LOL

Very well stated. Thanks for voicing the thoughts of many of us.

UPDATE: mine does indeed show -1° on every side except the short edges (top and bottom) where it does correctly show 0°.

It used to be -3° flat and -2° on all edges as noted in my previous post.

When it does show -1°, it's always so tantalizingly close to reading 0°. :(

Trying not to be too concerned with it though.

All I said was a little patience was in order. Im all for wanting my Apple devices to work correctly too, but some people on here were climbing the walls.

Mine is basically in the same boat. I played some games that use the sensors and they seem to work way, way better. So the 1 degree seems to be within the apps margin.

Same here. Can definitely see the difference while playing Real racing 3

It's partially better and partially worse, but it's definitely not fixed.

I've rotated my phone 180 degrees and the values don't change so, it's not that the surface isn't level.

Here's the measurements with the phone hanging off the table to account for buttons.

Before:

flat: -3
left side: 0
right side: -4
bottom: 3
top: 0

Now:

flat: sometimes 0, sometimes -1
left side: 1
right side: 2
bottom: sometimes 1, sometimes 2
top: sometimes 1, sometimes 2

So the 2 good sides I had are now bad.

After I recalibrate the Clinometer app, it read correctly on all 5 sides so iOS 7.0.3 still isn't calibrating correctly. I guess I can try to 90 minute DND trick, but I doubt that will work.

Updated....mine is perfect now, it was -3 flat before now it's -1/0. It never bothered me before so I guess it's a plus now that it's fixed.

So people still have it off by 1 degree and they call it's perfect now? I want my iPhone to register 0 degrees and not -1 degree if it should be 0 degrees?

Is a warranty replacement a brand new retail unit with matching serial number to the retail packaging ?

I also returned my unit within 14 days for refund because Apple didn't communicate and the fact I was told it would not be replaced with a new retail unit if I exchanged at the Genius Bar. Hence the 14 pay point is necessary.
