Update

I finally took mine in, because I hear 3 clicks whenever I press the home button. The genius immediately heard it and said to swap it out.

So he came back and said there are no service replacements and reccommended I return mine and rebuy it again. So I said lets do that...I gave them all my contact info and they are calling me whenever a 32GB verizon black comes in stock.

Heres hoping its good. I dont mind the loud click, its hearing 2 clicks after I let go of my button that is driving me insane.

I tested every 5S at the apple store of every color, all had some type of loud click. There were 0 silent ones. So its a normal thing, just hearing 2-4 clicks after you press it is def not normal.

I'm usually not picky, but the home button was just too noticeable on my 5s to ignore. It's loud and sticky unless you press it at an angle. I went back to Bestbuy to try another and it had the same problem. Guess I'll wait on a future batch.

It's fine if you can deal with it, otherwise I'd advise an exchange/return because it's not going to get better over the course of 2 years.

What's worse is now I'm highly aware of the home button on my 5 which is fine. :(

I'm pretty sure this issue is not a "problem" that will be fixed. Clearly there's something in the fingerprint technology that is causing this sort of a clicking noise. I hate to bring up the "Steve wouldn't have let this happen" card, but these are the sorts of little details that would've driven him insane.

My 5S home button just started sounding and feeling off today. Depending on how it's pressed, it sounds a bit crunchy like there's grit inside. There's also a little play in the button in the default unpressed state. It feels like a slightly loose tooth with a couple of grains of sand inside the socket.

I think there might be an issue with dirt getting inside the button shaft, or metal shavings from manufacturing. This would account for the gritty sound. It could also cause the button to sit differently in the housing, causing it to feel loose.

I'm going to live with it for now, and hopefully if there is dirt inside, it gets dislodged.

People, the button on your 5 "feels better" because it was the home button you were used to for years.

The 5S has a differently designed home button, that doesn't bother me in the least. You all are over reacting, I'm sorry.

Reading this thread just makes me digusted with western civilization, all this whining and moaning and "its not perfect im taking it back" BS is crazy. Most of you seem like spoiled rotten kids crying about some noise that produces .5 decibles. Go be productive :D
Oh I bought my phone out of contract and it makes clicking noise but Im still going to work in the morning and doing my workouts at night. If everything was perfect it would be a boring life.
A real problem would be "yo Im hitting my home button but my ***** isnt turning on" Just saying lol

Really, this thread made you that upset? lol.

As for the click it is embarrassing, especially when I’m in a lecture and want to check an email/text.

Not upset, and really its embarrassing haha exactly my point bud

You seem pretty upset, how is your whining about people complaining about the home button click any different to you whining about them whine. I guess you're new to forums.

You put people down, yet contradict yourself, that doesn't make sense. Bud!

New to forums??? Lol.... again not upset but I'll say this you prove my point it's funny the clicking sound embarrasses you seriously it literally made me lol :)

Just got my iPhone 5s on weds and I will say that I like the button the way it is. This one actually has feel to it. On my 3G and then my 4s I could barely tell if I hit the home button. At least this one I KNOW I hit the button. First people were complaining that the home button was too soft and didn't register presses. Now people are complaining that the button clicks. Who's to say that the button is designed right then and not now. Maybe the finally got the home button correct this time around. New technology makes things change. Maybe it's more durable now. Only time will tell

How loud is this clicking noise everyone is talking about? Does anyone have a video with the sound captured of this clicking noise from the 5S home button?

Thanks. I searched on youtube and could not find this particular video. All the videos I saw did not have any noticeable clicking sound.

Ignore me, tbh I’m not sure if it's as wide spread, the one I have is pretty much like the one in the video, although it isn't a huge issue, and it does work, if there is a possibility of getting one that isn't as loud I’d swap it.

Luckily the guys that work in the Apple store near me are really good plus I live about 10min walk away so it's easy for me to get it swapped out before the 14days.

When I first got my 5S, there was definitely a noticable difference compared to my 5. But I've gotten used to it since I've had the phone for a few weeks now.

This comment illustrates exactly what's wrong with students today. You're embarrassed because your phone made a clicking sound?! Maybe you should be embarrassed that you're playing with your phone during class instead of paying attention and taking notes. Just a thought.

Thought I would share my experience. I had 3 space grey models that had a very loud click on the home button along with a rattle up by the power button camera area. Each one had the same issue without fail.

Have a silver model now. Couldn't be any quieter or solid. No click no rattle. Home button is the most quiet one ive ever had on any iphone. Just lick of the draw.

I can see both sides of the argument. It's a phone it's going to make noise. And...I paid good money and expect it to be perfect. Both are correct and luckily there is a return and exchange policy for those who want to get exactly what they expect.

I think new phones are just stiff and need to be used a bit. If your phone is quiet from the start then maybe is a refurb unit ?

That's true. I wouldn't say the home button loudness is annoying , it's annoying when I click the button and then hear 2 or 3 clicks like it's popping back into place. When you press the button you should hear 1 main click. Not 3. I think this is an issue with others in this thread. The overall loudness isn't really that bad. Just takes getting used too.

Using a phone for note taking, recording of lectures, this is where tech is going, The University has a deal with Apple and offer iPad Mini's for free. I've achieved a 2.1 in both my first and second year. As for the student comment, I’ve served in Iraq as a mine hunter, and spent the last two years in the industry I’m currently studying for. Whilst still working 16 hours a week in the industry.

Guess I’m really embarrassed.

I've got no problem with using the iPhone or iPad for note taking or recording lectures. I did the same with my PowerBook when I was in college. But that's not what you said in your original post. You said you were embarrassed when you were checking email and text messages.

As for Iraq, I thank you for your service. You've sacrificed for our country, and you should be proud and deserve respect.

Admittedly I do use it for personal use during my lectures, so I can't pretend to be squeaky clean, sitting through a lecture about brain inspired cognitive thinking isn't exactly what I call fun. Plus I hate being classed as a typical student type, probably too old for that.

Although I feel as if I’m taking over this thread so will hush up, I am glad that most people are fine with the home button, when I say embarrassed, I don't mean I overly worry about it, it's probably just my sensitivity to the click.

Will sort a replacement next week and see if that's better.

Should hear the way some guys type on their laptops, like hitting it with a hammer.

How ignorant of a post.

When you pay $600+ for a phone, it SHOULD be perfect. I don't understand why people like you can't understand such a simple concept.
