I also have seen the comments.

I have debunked them in my last post here.

I find the latest one funny though, asking WHY I would fake it, and if I am a competitor trying to hurt apple.

Lol, I'm 17.

I agree. It is frustrating to be accused of skullduggery if in fact you're on the up and up.

Yet if there is some monkey business or tomfoolery going on, shenanigans like that can damage the reputation of a large company such as Apple.

It CAN damage, but doesn't. Does warranty repair work damage car companies? Did the now debunked prius acceleration damage Toyota? Apple is not Enron. Do i really care an iphone caught on fire in a way that would send me away from apple? Not really. I mean i feel for the op, but thats it.

I am calling shenanigans here. iPhones don't just decide to blow themselves up without some help from an outside source.

I got another picture for all the Nay sayers.

You can see the back of the screen is slightly "burned" where the venting occurred. The cables DID rip off when i ripped it off, and the mounting screw things at the bottom, one is bent and the other gone.

It is quite frustrating.

I don't have any reason to go against apple, I'm typing this on a MacBook Air for Christ's sake.

I've already stated in this thread I don't want to sue or anything, I just want a new phone. I love Apple and I really don't know why people jump to conclusions so fast when they were not here.

Excellent points. I hadn't looked at it that way.
A good example is the movie short,"30 Days". You would think it would swear people off of McDonalds but it really didn't.

You all don't think that the iphone had a message from the I.M.F. on it do you?

LOL.

Thats crazy I would sue Apple for that one.

Settle down people. I'm almost sure Apple is not directly at fault for this mishap. Also I'm almost sure this iPhone had been taken apart properly before the battery went kaput, and not while the OP was operating it as a assembled functioning iPhone. Where are the pics of the display side of the iPhone with the inevitable burn marks on the underside? I find it hard to believe this iPhone was disassembled to the degree shown in the pics all while a battery is exploding, and still in enough time to get the smoking battery pic. IMHO the shielding that is held in by 3 screws, and the display/camera ribbon connections along with the top the iPhone being removed before you started taking pics is the deal breaker for me.

I noticed you also took advantage of the KC Tool 10% discount for MR members from the MacBook Pro thread and probably just got your order a couple of days ago. Hmmm. I just got my Whia drivers in the mail today... I'll try not to blow anything up.

Actually I just got my order today! Haha.

As for the picture, look at my last post.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, thats actually a really weird coincidence.

I get my tools TODAY AFTER the thing decides to kill itself. -_- my luck.

All that damage and the phone didn't taco itself like the ones in those bendy threads. Disappointing.

Also disappointing are all the people saying sue. Law suits are to make people whole when they are wronged (in this context). Apple doing any more than replacing a defective phone and maybe a burnt countertop is just ludicrous.

1:

The battery was starting to "inflate", it pushed the TOP part of the screen up enough that I was able to grab ahold of it and rip it off from the bottom UP, of course the phone was getting hot at this point because of a malfunction in the battery so I pulled the screen off with quite a good amount of force. Doing so the screws just ripped out of the threads (they are small screws keep in mind..).

2:

As for this, keep in mind, the venting was not some sort of 30 second thing. This went on for about 3 minutes, my home filled with smoke. I work on computers, I did have a phillips screw driver that I was able to take the EMI shields off while it was smoking, because it was too hot to move, So I was trying to disconnect the battery to remove to get it outside (later thinking I realized how this would have done nothing at that point). That is why there is no shielding or cables.

3:

As for everyone wondering WHY I had a camera, well. I don't use this iPhone as my Phone, I have a Moto X that I use for my main phone. I use the iPhone for everything else other then texting and calling, So I had my Moto X with me. My first instinct after seeing other iPhones batteries have malfunctions lately was to get a picture for proof.

ALL the other pictures AFTER the smoke I took for Apple as they requested. I have a Table and a counter near each other (kitchen).

I hope this answers everyones questions.. I realize the skepticism, I would too, but I can assure you, all this was pure instinct, the phone WAS NOT open, had no damage, and RIGHT before the accident was actually IN USE (on Facebook).

So this randomly happens just a short time after you ordered a pentalobe screwdriver? And the phone just happens to be sitting on what looks suspiciously like an antistatic bag?

If the screen had been pulled with enough force to pull it off, it would be bent. The back casing seems fine to me.

On a similar point, if the screen had been pushed out by the battery, it would be bent. For example, here is a 3GS (with a weaker plastic casing) which has expanded: http://www.trbimg.com/img-5151ffb4/turbine/os-pictures-iphone-3gs-pops-open-20130326-002/582/582x323 Notice the screen is bent due to the pressure?

Also - the broken tabs on the bottom screen aren't consistent with a screen being ripped up.

Maybe there is a lesson to be learnt here - 17 year olds shouldn't be repairing devices with batteries unless they understand the risks and precautions they need to take.

Well, he definitely isn't lying about having a Moto X, as the EXIF data shows :p

i don't even know why this is an argument. there are cameras EVERYWHERE

if your'e at home and your phone explodes, you'll have a camera near by.

if you're out in public and your phone explodes, i'm sure ppl will be out with their cameras and probably yelling WORLDSTARRRRRRRRR

My iPhone 5S has just caught fire while i was using it (not charging.)

Screen bulged up so I yanked it off, and disconnected the battery.

I have pictures.

No 3rd Party cables or anything. All stock.

How long have you owned the phone?

All you people suggesting to sue are probably the same people that would sue McDonaold's for coffee too hot. Apple will for sure imburse the guy for the damaged iPhone simply because it's a manufacturing defect and within their policy (they don't have to if it isn't covered by AppleCare+ or under the original warranty, most companies won't care but this is Apple and it's good for PR). Also people need to realized that Lithium batteries all carry this risks, shipping Lithium batteries are treated as explosives and mailing lithium batteries are not allowed (varies by circumstances and state regulation).

ya people taking the role of inspector clouseau as usual "why was *that* there?" and "how far away was your moto x from the accident site"?

typical.

i don't know whether the OP was attempting to pop open his phone or not when this happened but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he was genuinely surprised to see his battery blow up like this.

i do not think that is what he wanted to do to his phone.

and yes we live in the internet age where people like to record stuff. if my phone's battery started bubbling up i can assure you i'll go find a camera before a i find a fire extinguisher.

The McDonald's coffee thing gets so misused and abused...if only people actually knew and understood what it was really about. But I digress.

wasn't it some lady who ordered coffee to go from the drive through and spilled it all in her lap when she drove away?
Like I said, too many people that actually know of it don't really know much of the actual information about it. Easy to lookup though.

I have read about quite a bit and don't agree with the verdict but that's a controversial issue that would get this thread really off topic. :)

I Did not know a Ziplock bag was Antistatic? I put all the pieces in a bag to keep them all together. The tabs are consistent, on is completely broken off and the other one bent in the direction i pulled it.

I did order a screwdriver. and it just arrived TODAY. Sorry it just so happens that it would look like I used a screwdriver that i ordered that was not even here. I haven't even got to use the tools. I got them to make a toolkit for macs. I didn't have any reason to go inside my phone even if I DID have the screwdriver. You people were not here, and quite frankly can't fully understand.

Thank you. Finally someone understands. I did not have any reason to open up my phone, and I carry the iPhone and Moto X with me everywhere.
