if your finger was burned, go to the hospital so that they can properly identify your chemical burn. Then, take your phone, finger, and hospital bill to Apple and demand a full refund, new phone, and a reimbursement for your hospital visit. If they refuse, sue. You should not have to go to the hospital because of your iPhone.

For anyone who may take offense to my suggestion he sue: I'm not the type of person who believes that litigation should always be involved. But at the very least, Apple should be bending over backwards to satisfy the OP. Get pictures of your burn, get a signed statement from the doctor, and show all this to the manager at the Apple Store. I'm sure you'll be amply compensated.

And don't drive yourself to the hospital. Call in a trauma helicopter.

I had exactly the same feeling. Could certainly be legit, but it doesn't smell like it.

Damaged the phone and now wants a free replacement by staging a spontaneous combustion event?

Who the h3ll would stage something like this?

Seriously, you people amaze me sometimes... again you don't have to believe it, but it doesn't change the fact this is what happened.

OP seems like he has no motive to make this a "thing" but he does. Just the spectacle and attention is motive enough.

Theres still something fishy. Maybe its borderline truth and lies hybrid.

Not sure the reason of why it happened, but clearly after it happened there was some "dramatization."

Clue:

ITT OP states he is 17.

I also have seen the comments.

I have debunked them in my last post here.

I find the latest one funny though, asking WHY I would fake it, and if I am a competitor trying to hurt apple.

Lol, I'm 17.

But then...

If you look at this thread from 2012 (OP has been around) you can see he said he and his gf are "over 18."

https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15363253#post15363253

both over 18, she pays for her phone, but her parents are the account holders.

Why lie about that? lol super suspicious. Milking the internet drama.

Ladies and gentlemen, case dismissed.

you could *almost* understand it if they owned apple shares..

but it is likely they don't.

they just want to sleep knowing their $650 phone is infallible, hand crafted by the high elves in a sacred town tucked away somewhere in the himalayas, where only tim cook is allowed to enter and personally supervise and motivate these happy talented craftsmen.

just talking about batteries is vulgar. talk about polished aluminium, sapphire glass and "unique design".

he makes a "thing" out of it because people call him out on it.

what would he gain by burning his phone? not to mention that burning a battery is incredibly dangerous - its acid can sparkle all over the place and burn your eyes and skin pretty badly.

attention is overrated.

regardless of whether he was attempting to open his phone or not i see evidence of a burnt battery.

he is a regular of this forum and just wanted to share his experience. hey it can happen.

i would too defend my claim if people started to call me a liar...

I was 15 Years Old. I lied about my age, because I was a retard. I think everyone has lied about their age when they were young.

Not sure what that proves?

I think people are just reading into it way to much.

Thank you!!! THIS.

I did not post this anywhere else but here, If i wanted attention wouldn't I have posted it on every forum, told every news station, ect.?

People are reading WAY to into this, it was an incident that happened to a phone, and I just shared my experience because I was lucky enough to have been able to catch it and just so happened to post on a forum that talks about this kind of stuff.

Seriously????? well since your playing detective I can't find my keys to my truck I was wondering if you can help me solve this unusual mystery:rolleyes:

Feel free to roll over and believe everything you read on the internet if you wish. I won't though.

So op - on 9to5 mac, you said that the phone was "too hot to move". So, it was too hot to move, yet it wasn't too hot to grab your screwdriver, with the battery splurging smoke and chemicals, and start removing shields?

I think they are not going to deny a refund on this

----------

I currently am.

How old was the iPhone ? I mean, the battery was defective, but how much time took to reach the explosion point ?

----------

Yes, I am.

I bought it Launch day night.

Ok you did answer my question ... :D
Very strange .... It worked fine for 5 months and then ....

----------

Just got off the phone with Apple.

They asked for the photos.

They will get back to me. They said I will have to send the phone in (of course), and they don't know if they are going to send a replacement yet.

I think they are trying to check if you had used a third party charger/cable before send you a replacement.

Btw while batteries could explode like that, several elements in this story are just not clear.
Especially the part where he took a screwdriver to open a device almost burning, with smoke coming out of it, and while the device itself was becaming very hot.

Apple is a victim too

Apple Store is 2 Cities away, I'm on the Phone with Apple right now.

My finger got burned from something "spitting" out of the battery while it was venting.

All in all, I read about this happening before, but never really didn't think it would do that on MY iPhone..

My luck ._.

----------

Too late on the breathing.

I got it outside AFTER it vented because it was extremely hot.

Dude, I feel for you. Not an Apple design problem, looks like a lemon of a battery. Not the first time and won't be the last time. This has happened across the board in technological devices. From laptops from all manufacturers to smartphones of all manufacturers. And because of the sheer number of iphones out in the world the likely-hood of this happening to an Apple product increases. Maybe it's time that Apple put some of that R&D money towards developing their OWN battery. This story may get traction b/c their are so many envious/haters out their. Hope you get this all sorted out.

Batteries hold electricity. If damaged they can and will heat up and combust. Many of todays hybrid cars have caught fire after an accident when the battery was damaged. Anything that holds that much power has the potential of a problem when damaged.

Lesson is that if your phone all of a sudden gets hot and starts smoking, take it out of your pocket. You would not think you should have to tell people not to touch things on fire but the education system is not what it used to be anymore.:p

This story is made-up.

Most likely the OP was messing around inside the phone itself and caused the battery to rupture.

Nobody "Rips off the back panel" and "Disconnects the battery" when a device becomes incendiary.

A reasonable and normal response is to drop the phone, pick it up with a kitchen utensil or other device and put it somewhere that won't start a house fire.

Nope, even if you were to short the battery out it should not do that without being defective it one way or another...
