why would someone intentionally blow up their phone just to make a thread on here? you guys who think its fake make me laugh.

I'd burn my finger off for a few million.
Dream on

The front of the phone (the screen) started to come off (battery started to "inflate", being a tech guy I was almost certain what was happening so I ripped the screen off and then the battery started to vent violently. The aluminum conducted the heat and was at a pretty good temperature while it was venting (at least 150* F.)

While i attempted to move the phone to get it outside, The battery "spit" and it did burn my finger, I have a small blister but nothing I would really complain about.
Next time drop it in water maybe?? Not like you will lose any data. Also don't stop to take pictures and breathe the toxic fumes, just saying...

Exactly. I just got a claim that I found it at school and it was activation locked so I was parting it out. First off, its MY phone, and 2 why part it out? I would make nothing because it would still be activation locked

At the time I didn't really care.

This iPhone is on fire! :D Seriously the odds for that to happen are near zero. It should be more likely to die from lightning or win in the lottery.

I'm sure Apple will replace it for free.

lol I love Apple products but I hate the vicious fanboys who can't accept that maybe an Apple product is faulty and this guy's iPhone really did end up like this...

Ditto.

OP, I would go get checked out if you can. I understand you have no health insurance, but I would just have someone check you out just in case. The smoke Li-Ion batteries produce is not healthy for any part of you. Has the smell passed yet?

I will definitely worry more when my iPhone 5 starts getting really warm.

I hope you had a backup of your iPhone or it has no data that was priceless.

Has Apple said anything yet?

Right, so pointing out flaws in an argument makes us "vicious fanboys" now?

The guy has no reason to open up an iPhone. Yet buys a pentalobe screwdriver. But the screwdrivers were only received today, after his phone caught fire, with parts of his story which don't add up (his phone was on fire, and he went to get a phillips screwdriver to remove emi shields?!). Because you would, of course, risk chemical burns and smoke inhalation to open up an iPhone correctly whilst it was suffering a thermal event. You wouldn't just throw it outside.

Put 2 and 2 together and stop insulting people. How many of these stories have we seen? and how many have been genuine?

If this happened to me, I would e-mail Tim Cook about it. Back several years ago, my brother had an issue with his Macbook, and emailed Steve Jobs (sjobs@apple.com). A few days later he actually received a phone call from Apple Relations to solve the issue.

This must not happen. We don't buy iPhones to danger our lives, and this type of thing is extremely dangerous.

This kind of thing must reach to the company's CEO, and if it's starting to happen on more and more devices, they must issue some sort of recall. This is not acceptable.

I'm sure if you e-mail Tim Cook (tcook@apple.com) someone from his PR team or whatnot will take notice of it and will make sure to contact you.

He had Steve Jobs on the phone?

OP is very busy defending him self on all sites it seems --- with same answers --- he is really trying hard.

Now I wish we could hear apple's take on this situation once they figure it out.

I'm sorry to say but once again it all just seems made up, as for the pictures showing the screen later on...well a simple lighter under the metal part would create that black part, also since you included pics of the screen part later on...you had plenty of time to create the damage on the screen that would/could slightly match with the bottom part....

Also you were soo good at taking pictures and since you had your Moto X handy [which you claim to have used to take photos]...why is that you didn't start making a video?

If taking photos takes 3 seconds then starting to make video is even quicker....don't you think that it would have been helpful?

Lastly, I'm sure the top part must have become very hot and I'm positive that it wouldn't have ripped out without force, did you happen to chuck it? because I didn't see the top half of the iPhone nearby in any of the first images you provided....

All I can say is this entire scenario/experience you shared with us doesn't make sense as there are soo many flaws in it, your soo busy convincing us, maybe should have taken a little time off to work up your story rather than running to publicize it all over the internet and getting slammed with everyone pointing out the flaws....

On the other hand if it was all made up you'd think all those details would have been figured out the and the story would have been "worked up". The very theory could be used against itself too it seems.

At this point I'm done defending myself.

Everyone has a right to believe what they want, and that fine, but the fact is that this did happen, and it happened just as I said it did.

Your right, I could have shot a video, now that I think about it, that would have been a good idea, but it is too late. I am taking the phone to the Apple Store tomorrow as per a Senior Advisor has told me to.

I just want the phone replaced, I'm not making a big deal about anything. Every story has a flaw, thats the goal everyone tries to find, but it doesn't mean what was said did not happen. I'm glad this got publicized, so it can be addressed, or so its at least aware of at Apple.

Thank you to everyone who does understand the situation, and is not trying to find a way to say it was on purpose or a hoax or some other BS.

While exploding batteries do occur, this comes across as staged.

Sure the bulging battery would make the back pop off but the placement on the table, the near perfect photo of the phone omitting smoke, etc.

Did the phone blow up and you then managed to remove the rest of the back plate, unhook the battery, place it screen down on a table, and then capture the perfect shots on camera?

If my phone explode I wouldn't pose it for photos, I'd get the thing the hell out the house to ensure those fumes were out of harms way. I'm not saying it WAS staged I'm just stating how it comes across and how others on other sites reporting this are commenting.

iPhone 5s just caught on fire

I had exactly the same feeling. Could certainly be legit, but it doesn't smell like it.

Damaged the phone and now wants a free replacement by staging a spontaneous combustion event?
