iPhone 5s just caught on fire

If this had been my Galaxy just caught fire, and I'm going back to iPhone; thread would have gone much differently.

No normal person would take a screwdriver to a phone with a burning battery. Ever. Especially without getting severe burns, since that's right by the primary vent point of the battery.

You amaze me, The venting took 3 minutes, I did this twords the end of the venting, it was not venting violently anymore, and I guess I'm not a normal person, I sure don't consider myself normal. I reacted how I did and thats how it was.

Hey I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it since these things interest me. No need for the "You amaze me" crap.

Like I said, I doubt you'll have no trouble getting a new phone. Apple will want the phone back too much not to, whatever the situation. However, you have to admit there are lots of oddities. Like how the phone was "too hot to touch" yet not too hot to pry the (metal backed) screen up with your bare fingers, etc.

I think there are two main reasons this went down the way it did:

1) Its the 5S newest model flagship and claim there was no charge, no 3rd party, it wasn't even BEING charged and there was an issue. Makes most people want to find holes in the plot almost as a reaction of defense. It was an attack on the current quality of Apple and there didn't seem to be any immediate excuses so the urge to find one was the initial reaction.

2) It was a very vague initial first post, almost suspiciously. The main thing that jumps out at you are the pictures after a simple, almost challenging in tone, explanation. It left many holes. As he went on it became more explained and reasonable what happened.

It doesn't really matter. I mean its not like this now means theres a chance you could be walking down the street and have your head blown off.

All electronic devices have the opportunity to fail. Its just reality. And these batteries don't "explode" like frag grenades, they just expand. Its not like this means any of us are in danger now. It just happens. Its quite realistic. It gets hot and then expands (not to be confused with explodes.) It also doesn't imply that something even more "explosive" can potentially happen.

As the thread went on it became more suspicious because of the 9to5 entry. And like some conspiracy motive to make Apple look bad plotted up as well.

Like I said, as it went on it became pretty reasonable. But the first post was antagonistically anemic.

At the apple store,

Apple Tech said they had one come in last month with the same issue.

They are running through the notes on my phone.

There really is nothing for YOU to get the bottom of. The only vested interest you have is that he posted here. It really is none of you concern to get to the bottom of anything. You have the right not to believe OP but then thats your problem.

Again, that's why - getting to the bottom of it because it interests me. If the op chooses not to reply to me, he doesn't have to. Neither does anyone else. Same as he didn't have to reply on 9to5 either. However, this is a discussion forum - so things tend to get discussed, instead of lots of posts saying "awwwwh I'm so sorry that happened", which would be pretty pointless.

So much drama here.

Can we please get back to the poor iPhone who just had its life cut terribly short?

You know some of you people posting here are quite negative. It makes me very sad to see the way you guys treat someone like this.

To the person who criticized these photos as being staged AND photoshopped, I can tell you they are not as someone who has edited hundreds of thousands photos for nationally published magazines. Those photos are not edited, I've analyzed them. They are also taken very haphazardly, and show clear signs of being very random. It would be very hard to fake something like this with no errors.

To the person who criticized the OP for including an anti static bag, you’re jumping to the wrong conclusions. It's a plastic bag, like the kind 100% of people would use to hold a bag full of evidence.

To people who mentioned that the screen was taken off too perfectly. No it wasn't, the screen is warped and damaged. It has been ripped off the phone, and the screw mounts and tabs are damaged very clearly, and all the cables show signs of being ripped off.

There are zero inconsistencies in this story at all. I find it very very troubling that people keep attacking someone like this. It unimaginable to me that people would give someone who just had a seriously traumatic event trouble like this, and throw out accusations so haphazardly. Then as soon as those accusations are addressed other accusations immediately pop up. Someone even criticized him for having a camera handy as being too much of a coincidence.

Here's an idea, just let it go. You're wrong. Stop grasping at straws to abuse this poor guy.

Apple Store gave me a new Phone. Spoke to the Store manager the whole time, extremely nice. My Girlfriend's iPhone had a cracked screen so they replaced that for free, and my Mom's iPhone 5 battery wasn't holding a very long charge so they are replacing it at the moment.

All in all, they understood the situation and said they get this at least once a year, and that it does happen.

So this randomly happens just a short time after you ordered a pentalobe screwdriver? And the phone just happens to be sitting on what looks suspiciously like an antistatic bag?

If the screen had been pulled with enough force to pull it off, it would be bent. The back casing seems fine to me.

On a similar point, if the screen had been pushed out by the battery, it would be bent. For example, here is a 3GS (with a weaker plastic casing) which has expanded: http://www.trbimg.com/img-5151ffb4/turbine/os-pictures-iphone-3gs-pops-open-20130326-002/582/582x323 Notice the screen is bent due to the pressure?

Also - the broken tabs on the bottom screen aren't consistent with a screen being ripped up.

Maybe there is a lesson to be learnt here - 17 year olds shouldn't be repairing devices with batteries unless they understand the risks and precautions they need to take.

As for the old 3GS, it is entirely possible for the screen to come off from an expanding battery without bending. It happened to mine. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1573239/
It broke the screw tabs entirely and I believe it bent the sim card tray. Other than that the screen was entirely fine.

Are they giving your mom an iPhone 5 or 5S? Just curious.

Good to hear everything is taken care of.

What they did sounds reasonable. Glad everything turned out okay.

Final Update

Just left the Apple Store.

Extremely nice people and very helpful, except for the first Genius that spoke to me, he tried to dismiss it and claimed the phone does come with a warning inside the manual stating that batteries expand.. I requested the manager and thats who I talked to the rest of the time. The manager understood that they do expand, but they are not supposed to expand to the point of violently venting, especially on a new phone.

Either way, the issue is fixed.

Apple Corporate is going to be calling me about the health issues.

I believe you, if that counts for anything. I have been following this thread since you first started. Do us a favor.. can you let us know what Apple Corp tells you and what/if they plan to do about this incident?

Appreciate it, and I think I speak this for the forum, we are glad you are safe, and no one got hurt.
