but the margins are bigger on the old.

Not necessarily. The price of the hardware could be cheaper on newer ones due to more streamlined manufacturing processes or better production technology. Newer isn't always cheaper when raw. They just keep the price at high despite saving on the newer hardware.

And this is why I don't bother posting in here, thanks for adding to the conversation. I do however disagree that it's just "another colour" a design team would've sat down and decided on the colour, it's not just picked out of a hat randomly, it's a part of the design, not just an addition.

The problem I have with the colour gold is it's a statement of wealth, except, it's not with tech products, it's just a coating, it's pure vanity, and always admired Apple for not being about vanity, but about form.

TLDR: The colour would've been picked out by a design team, therefore, a part of the design.

the only problem I see with your logic is that the design isn't changing from last year, so unless they planned to release a different color when they designed the 5, which was probably 3 years ago, then I think they did just add a color for some variety and it was never part of the "design".

other stuff goes into it too. R&D and marketing.

Why do people even post this? A nice dual-core can easily destroy crappy quad, hexa, and octa-core CPUs.

Except that the snapdragon 600 absolutely destroys the a6. Two of the cores on the sd600 are faster than the a6. The best dual core cpu at the moment is the exynos 5250 in the Nexus 10. It is a dual core a15 and absolutely rapes the a6 in cpu based benchmarks. Under 500ms sunspider speeds.

Releasing a GOLD edition is almost always a sure sign of a decline in consumer interest in a product. It's like a last ditch attempt to save a product. Even still I want a gold iPhone. If they have a silver iPhone I'd like that even more than golden iPhone.

I wonder if Gold gets better reception than aluminum or silver? Or is it that Goldman has all the aluminum so gold is an attempt for metal diversification to bring down the price of aluminum.

This is absurd. From the part leaks, its obvious its not a gold gold, but a champane gold. Its not like its going to be pure gold color. The iPhone dont need to be saved. Rly, this forum has more apple haters than fans...

I dont understand why people care so much about cpus and cores and frequency, when what is important is if there is lag and how responsive is the device. The iPhone 5 is super fast as it is. Thats dont meen they should not update the CPU performance but come on....is that what metters most? I dont care what snapdragon, exynos and **** there is inside if it just works. Benchmarks masure the speed of the hardware, not the software-hardware combination.

User experience counts here, too. The fastest, multi-coriest CPU can still perform like a dead elephant in a tar pit if the operating system doesn't use it efficiently. I think Apple does this better than anybody, that's their MO: hardware and software designed for each other.

I really, really hope there isn't a gold or champagne-colored iPhone... both sound so awful to me.

Isn't it still annodized aluminum? That's what the part leaks look like.

I think it's safe to say that marketing would more or less remain a constant cost. I admit R&D could drive the margin lower in the case of a new flagship phone, but they aren't really innovating much on the cheaper phone. They basically used what they already know and slapped low end specs into the device.

Gold iPhone…

Robin Thicke is already in line.

people still complaining about 'gold'. obviously it will not look like 'solid gold'. get over it!

and even if apple release 5S and 5C they need to start differentiating more and better. they are simply loosing out too much to the android-ecosystem. do what you did with the ipod - apple! different devices for different needs - period.

Ill wait til I see it for final judgment, but if apple is willing to add a color to their flagship line, I would assume it would be attractive. I could care less about a 128gb option if 32gb doesnt become base

Top seller in the Middle East!

I'm keeping to my guns on this one. This gold case iPhone is a high end model since they can't get the yields up on the fingerprint sensor.

My prediction it's called the "iPhone 5U" (unlimited) with an optional gold case. This 5U is the only one with a fingerprint sensor and 128 Gigs of flash.

The gold color is optional with black and white also available. It will also have a lot of security features with end to end voice scrambling, ITU defined IP-traceback and a bunch of other security features using BT 4.0.

It will not be cheap costing about a grand more than the 5S.

The underclocked snapdragon 600 in the nexus 7 performs extremely smooth so this point is moot. Even when pushing 1920x1200 pixels.

Once the iPhone gets true multitasking you'll see where this makes a difference.

I'd prefer a Product Red version than Gold. Planning to upgrade if they do release a 128GB version and keep the current prices. Not long to wait. :D

Yeah, exactly!

I don't care about 128GB, but I hope causes Apple to raise the entry-level to 32GB. Then again, capacity upgrades are a gold mine for Apple, so they'll resist this.

No kidding, dude! I'm tired of paying $100 extra to get 16 GB more storage.

Do you remember when the white iPhone 4 was delayed and it was rumoured to be some kind of design flaw with the white paint/flash/quality issue (something along those lines)?

The same applies here, just because the case design doesn't change per-se, doesn't mean a design team doesn't sit down and think it through, they don't leave it up to someone that doesn't matter, I'm sure Cook and Ive had to go through different colours until they got the right one, and a team would've worked up to that point anyway.

Even the most minute changes require a lot of thinking.

Another vote for a Product RED version 5s.

Hey people keep hoping for a larger screened iPhone THIS YEAR, I scan sure hope for a red one. :-D
