typically contracts are 2 years, so we have two patterns.
iphone -> 3gs -> 4s -> 5s
and
iphone 3g -> iphone 4 -> iphone 5
I don't think it's Apple's intention to encourage users to upgrade every single year, it's just for those that are on the offset +1 year that need a reason to renew their contract.
I own a 4S and am quite uninterested in getting a 5S if this is all it's going to be.
A faster processor? It's already fast enough.
A better camera? it's already good enough.
Faster internet? 3G really isn't that bad.
Taller screen? I was good with 3.5 inches.
I want something that's actually new - not just another spec bump. The specs are already adequate - awesome across the board with the 4S, and solidly awesome for the 5... any spec bump for the 5S is overkill.
Any of the following would be really freaking cool and make me buy the next iPhone in a heartbeat:
- Haptic feedback. I should be able to feel the virtual controls. I should be able to use the iPhone even if I'm mute, deaf, and blind. (Mind control would also be an acceptable form of input if that's the standard...)
- 3D display. I know that it has a bad reputation with a lot of people, but I feel like if you put the technology in the hands of hundreds of thousands of developers, a few of them should be able to come up with the way to make a "killer" 3D app - you know, that first app that demonstrates how to do it right and takes the technology from novelty to must have.
- Fingerprint sensors. Begone passwords and locks - I need to remember you no more.
- Touch sensitive all over. I feel like a lot of games would benefit from having virtual shoulder buttons on the iPhone and maybe some triggers on the back. Suddenly you go from being limited to 4 button action games to 12 button action games.
Alas, I'm thinking the iPhone 5S won't be the big thing this year. They'll give it the specs so it can go toe to toe with the Galaxy SIV, but that's all.
I think the big things are going to be:
- New product, either a watch or a TV. It won't be both though - they'll each canabalise the amount of attention people pay to the other.
- iOS 7. Maybe they'll actually put out a version with more features rather than more stock apps. How many crappy stock apps have they billed as new iOS features at this point?
