Well its not as if Apple have given anything to be happy about!!!!!

----------

Whilst the Galaxy S5 once again trounces Apple in all departments!!!!

How will Samsung trounce Apple in all respects? Really? Aside from a larger screen - granted its nice - where is "the innovation"? from Samsung.

Apple offers an integrated experience - I have compared the Samsung tablets to the iPad and their is no comparison - I can put Google Apps on my iPad and it is still better in build quality than the Samsung tablets. So Apple wins there.

Samsung and Android don't offer a desktop/laptop with a real Operating system that integrates with iOS.

While I agree Samsung has upped its competition - with the S4 - it has not provided everything Apple does as a company.

The moment Google abandons Samsung - they are dead in the phone market.

If you have an ip5 and want a 6, the 5s is perfect.

Hi Phil.

Yes, agree. rather smaller changes, then major overhaul, users and devs will be happy, and those few geeks, who cry all nights, can easily switch to Android already.

Also not happy about too much skeuomorphism either, but in some way it's not necessarily bad thing, just needs to be kept within some reasonable limits.

For me I've given Samsung Galaxy SIII a go and quite frankly for all of Apple's flirtation with skeuomorphism their products still come our more consistent than either vanilla Android or the various skinned and butchered versions put out there by OEM vendors.

The S4 doesn't look particularly difficult to catch up to, as it's mostly an S3 with a faster CPU and GPU, and upgraded camera... iPhone 5S should just about do it in those respects.

I tend to agree. Of course it depends on what you want from your phone. Personally, I want a phone that takes good photos and movies that can display them beautifully on a device with impeccable build quality and attention to detail.

That device my friends is the iPhone. Not the GS4. I have an iPhone (personal) and an GSIII (for business. Admittedly, the GSIII has a very good camera and is quick too.

My client is Samsung and I've seen the GS4 up close... the build quality is nowhere near as premium as the iPhone 5. Compared to the gorgeous build-quality of the iPhone 5, the GS4 looks likes and feels a bit gimmicky. Yes, the screen is BIG and just as good as the GSIII, but feel each one in your hand...

Hardware-wise, the 5S should be good enough for me (assuming it doesn't scuff as easily as the 5), I'm more concerned with iOS 7.

I don't think I'd like to make a return to Android anytime soon. Outside of a superior UI, more freedom, and a larger screen, there isn't much else that attracts me to that platform, overall I still prefer iOS.

A new camera and a slightly faster processor... I'll keep my iPhone 4 and wait to see if the 6 is any better. :(

Me too! If that's all the "innovation" they are capable of, then you must be brain dead to change your current phone for "this"!

Not too suprising and it makes sense. I don't understand why people expect a Giant speed bump and such if there is no software or services to take advantage of said things.

As much as I love my nexus 4 I don't see any apps that are optimized for its quad core processor

nobody at apple expects normal people to upgrade annually. they update their models annual just like tvs, stereos, cars, and laptops. do you upgrade those annual? if you do, you're nuts.

I upgrade every 2 years, and yes my TV is still 720p Plasma (3 years). However, I know some people prefer to pay less for the phone and upgrade every year (the pre-paid crowd), to each their own I guess.

Whichever way you put it, one new model every 2 years is getting old.

I don't know why people keep insisting that the "s" series is bad/sucks/etc because of upgrading.

I hope people realize that although Apple would love you to upgrade every time they come out with a new product - it's not always about "you" - it's also about getting new customers.

Having a newer phone on the market attracts new customers who a) might have android/etc or b) not have a smart phone. They might also just be of age to get their first phone. Lots of variables.

It's not always about whether or not it's a worthy upgrade from the very last model. And that's true for not only the iPhone - but also any phone/manufacturer.

Too Little, Too Late

If Apple releases the 5S with just a new camera and processor,

and if apple waits until fall to do it,

AAPL is doomed.

http://www.neowin.net/news/htc-one-delay-due-to-component-sourcing-struggles

HTC for many suppliers is no longer a tier one customer since cutting their orders dramatically in recent months. Their problem is actually quite simply; selling phones with batteries that are too low capacity, the storage being too small and the software running on the phone failing to be given updates on a regular and consistent basis. If they addressed those issues they could easily pull themselves ahead of Samsung and Nokia but instead what we've seen is release after release of very average products with the only main strong suit is their relationship with carriers given the number I see in my own country being offered for $0 down on reasonable tariff plans.

The HTC One looks like anything *but* an "average product". To be it looks like the best Android offering to-date, and most reviews so far have agreed. The hardware design alone is stunning IMO.

Excuse me while I ask.....

Why is this front page news?

The "S" models are more predictable than a fat woman who hasn't eatin in two weeks! We already know she's gonna grab the chicken and run.

Don't people get this

I wouldn't say that about iOS exactly, as there's always room for improvement on that front, but smartphones in general have.

We're all still riding high from the days when the mobile scene was still brand new, and awesome things seemed to come out every other day. While I think tablets still have plenty of space to grow, smartphones have matured to the point where we can't expect every new release to melt our faces off with brand new, unprecedented features that completely change everything we know about small computers that fit in our pockets.

It's moved into that gentle groove where everything is more iterative, like the PC scene during the 00's. We'll still see new things, but they'll be smaller, more focused and spaced farther apart. Now it's all about faster, thinner, better cameras, more battery life. Improving the concept, in other words.

This is so true, while I'm a Apple fan to the bone and always want them to have people excited about every updated product it's just not possible with anyone or any product! I don't understand why people don't get this, don't try and tell me Samsung has innovated when all they have ever done is copy the competition and push phone after phone with cheap plastic hardware. Are Samsung fans going to, with a straight face, say from the Galaxy S3 to S4 is a innovative leap forward, really??? That's no different than iPhone 5 to 5S if in fact that is what the update will be? Samsung doesn't even have their own OS, they use someone else's! Android is nothing more then a similar OS to iOS. Or every smartphone is really just a different iPhone, just like Apple to Microsoft and they're both again based on Apple's work from the beginning!
I've used an S3 and the only thing I can see that could be a big difference is the bigger screen and that's if you need, or want that but the phone itself is a cheap piece of **** hardware wise. Android always has issues from so many changes for different brands, they're clunky but they have their good points . I myself love the size of i5 and use my iPad for the bigger screen when needed. Please people don't try and say Apple is behind, the competition has finally caught up and that's a good thing for all consumers. I still say the best UI and OS is iOS and their hardware will always be leaps above the rest! There quality and customer service is really the best there is! Compared to any other company I have ever dealt with, especially for their size their C.S. is second to none!!!:apple::apple::apple::cool:

If you think other company's have something better to offer you, don't hesitate to go and get it! I've had friends and family change to other phones including S3's and a handful went back to iPhone after 6 months or less! But I'll admit one of them loves his S3 and I asked him if he's getting the S4? This is his reply
"It looks like the same phone with a few more options that that I really won't use, like half of them on my S3". He followed with " and they complain about Apple adding an S update ,Samsung just adds a number".
We really have reached the point that game changers like the first iPhone is going to be extremely hard to do. But something will come and I have no idea if it will even be a phone that wows us next???

Are you saying Apple as a company would prefer to make less $ than more $? If so, the entire board, everyone at the top need to be fired. Let's not kid ourselves. Companies exist to make $; that is their first and foremost priority. It defines their existence.

typically contracts are 2 years, so we have two patterns.
iphone -> 3gs -> 4s -> 5s
and
iphone 3g -> iphone 4 -> iphone 5

I don't think it's Apple's intention to encourage users to upgrade every single year, it's just for those that are on the offset +1 year that need a reason to renew their contract.

It's a shame. They definitely acknowledge the competition, as Schiller's comments prove, yet they're not driven to actually do anything about it.

Assuming this report is true of course.

how quickly do you expect they'd be able to respond to the competetion? I'm sure iPhone 5S has been in development for some time now....and for the last few years every other iPhone has been an S

I own a 4S and am quite uninterested in getting a 5S if this is all it's going to be.

A faster processor? It's already fast enough.
A better camera? it's already good enough.
Faster internet? 3G really isn't that bad.
Taller screen? I was good with 3.5 inches.

I want something that's actually new - not just another spec bump. The specs are already adequate - awesome across the board with the 4S, and solidly awesome for the 5... any spec bump for the 5S is overkill.

Any of the following would be really freaking cool and make me buy the next iPhone in a heartbeat:
- Haptic feedback. I should be able to feel the virtual controls. I should be able to use the iPhone even if I'm mute, deaf, and blind. (Mind control would also be an acceptable form of input if that's the standard...)
- 3D display. I know that it has a bad reputation with a lot of people, but I feel like if you put the technology in the hands of hundreds of thousands of developers, a few of them should be able to come up with the way to make a "killer" 3D app - you know, that first app that demonstrates how to do it right and takes the technology from novelty to must have.
- Fingerprint sensors. Begone passwords and locks - I need to remember you no more.
- Touch sensitive all over. I feel like a lot of games would benefit from having virtual shoulder buttons on the iPhone and maybe some triggers on the back. Suddenly you go from being limited to 4 button action games to 12 button action games.

Alas, I'm thinking the iPhone 5S won't be the big thing this year. They'll give it the specs so it can go toe to toe with the Galaxy SIV, but that's all.

I think the big things are going to be:
- New product, either a watch or a TV. It won't be both though - they'll each canabalise the amount of attention people pay to the other.
- iOS 7. Maybe they'll actually put out a version with more features rather than more stock apps. How many crappy stock apps have they billed as new iOS features at this point?

Definitely. I'm glad someone finaly told that. This is the reason why Samsung isn't nowhere near Apple's ecosystem and UX.

Um, they did that already - ONCE.

no they didn't - they said they did and some people actually believed it.

well, Samsung just moved to Retina resolution. When Apple did that two years ago, it was all "wow!", "amazing!". When Samsung does the same for a gorgeous 5" AMOLED display, it's all "boooh", "nothing new".

Well its not as if Apple have given anything to be happy about!!!!!

Stop it, I'm at work :) Laughing out loud in my cubicle isn't conducive to an efficient work environment (though neither is checking MacRumors).
