please link us to some painted phones than are immune to scratching when not protected. very curious.
You made my point for me. Fix the hardware issues (meaning don't paint the phone in the first place) and I'll consider replacing my 4. ;)

I know that Google's free products are based on advertising. Me and 300 million other people continue to use products such as GMail nonetheless and so far the advertising hasn't affected me one bit. I'll take it! But I wouldn't argue with someone who's turned off by the idea of ads being presented to them based on the content of their emails. To each his own.

Of course, Apple does this too and they continue to get in hot water over things like location tracking and personal information collection in their mobile advertising framework. So if this kind of thing is really upsetting to you, then you probably shouldn't be buying Apple devices either.

Google does it on a main purpose. That is the difference.
For some time I see only Apple (and other things I like) related Ads on all pages I enter, coincidence?

If Apple is not innovating, so by this definition Samsung isn't either. There is nothing innovative in the S4.

So then, it seems that "innovation" is a poor metric to use.

Market share might be better as a test. We'll see how it goes. Maybe Apple can break its losing streak without any innovation.

----------

Yeah....right. Despite - the release of the S4 - Apple is still insanely profitable - has $180 billion in the bank and a whole suite of hardware and software and services.

Samsung is a hardware company that relies on Google. Once Google decides to rely less on Samsung for hardware sales - and it will - Samsung will be hamstrung. Samsung's success in the mobile market relies entirely on the quality of the products Google owns and controls. End of story.

The relationship between Samsung and Google is deteriorating.

Google is the real competitor to Apple in mobile software. Not Samsung.

Once everyone has a 5 inch commodity screen and equal processor - Samsung loses its unique position.

Oh. OK. So the damn-near 50% drop in AAPL is nothing that anybody should pay any attention to. Got it.

:rolleyes:ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Wake me up when the real Apple returns. Probably in fall 2014 but by then it will be too late. I will be a Samsung user.

Unfortunately, "the real Apple" lies amoulderin' in his grave. RIP Steve.

Of course it's not coincidence. That's what they do! It's called "targeting"! Guess what, iAds do this too. In fact, this is what Apple has to say about their own targeting:

"Our highly-effective targeting can leverage demographic data, as well as unique interest and preference data that taps into user passions that are relevant for your brand. "

They may not do it as well as Google, but they're trying their best to gather your personal info for ad targeting.

I suppose I should have said in the modern tech industry, as comparisons from complete different era's make little sense. Also, I never said he was the greatest innovator, only that his desire and passion to do so were unmatched.

Right but to say Jobs passion is unmatched is still historically debatable. Edison as the most prolific inventor in history (at least based on granted patents). To suggest the father of the phonograph, DC electricity, the light bulb, the electric motor, etc had less passion than Jobs isn't believable.

And realistically, Jobs is more of an innovator than inventor. He had the idea, but it was usually someone else who made it real. Woz really invented the home PC. Jobs just made it practical. Parc Xerox we know invented the mouse. Jobs just made it relatable to people.Tony Fadell designed the iPod, etc., etc.

Why is it I get the feeling that if Apple doesn't come out with a new form factor every year, a lot of folks on here are going to cry and moan?

Sorry, but not everyone can afford a new phone every year.
Unless and until everyone can afford a new phone every year, Apple should NOT release one!

Wow Apple is really falling behind now! I have an iphone 4S and I dont see myself signing another 2year contract and paying extra$ for something similar with just minor tweaks. There really is no innovation without Steve.. a thicker & heavier ipad, a faulty macbook retina, and a similar iphone for the past several years (except for the unattractive dark metal)! Now I like Apple and have several products but it is apparent that Apple is not the business that it used to be. I'm sure Tim Cook is good at following directions but as a leader he lacks innovation.. we can all see that during his presentations.

a little Andoird HDMI "stick" that plugs into the TV

Huh? Brand and model, please. I never heard of anything like that. What sorts of stuff does it do?

Do they come in Chromebook versions, so that your TV can be magically converted into a Chromebook if you use an IR keyboard and mouse? That would be sweet.

and if you are on laptop, you have to be logged into your Google account for some services, it doesn't "just happen".

Clue: The laptop OS that 90% of people use can be set up to automatically log you in to your Google account when you fire up any app that needs it.

Yes indeed, it "just happens".

I got the iP5 a few weeks ago, I needed to add a new iPad 4 LTE on my acccount so I took the discounted iPhone price then put the iPad 4 LTE on that number and moved the iPhone to my regular number. I saved my upgrade(s) as I have a few so I can resell my iP5 this summer and get the iP5S, and then decide next year if the iP6 is worth it or wait for the iP6S and go that route.

If the body was solid, I could accept an "S" update. But this thing chips paint like nobody's business. Why should I have to wait 2 years before they fix the hardware issues?

Agreed. The iPhone 5 has some good technology but Apple are really dropping the ball on build quality. Let's not forget scuff-gate and misaligned text issues among others.

Why didn't they make the case titanium like the old PowerBook G4s? It's strong and much lighter than the stainless steel they used in the 4 and 4S.

Apple needs to return to its roots and make truly premium quality devices that people can lust after again. Instead they have a 'numbers guy" CEO that only seems to care about maximising profits and returns to investors.

When Google discontinues it's service, then it's a shame for everybody even with SGS 4 in pocket..

When Google discontinues its services, the SGS4 will be a quaint antique from the olden days.

HTH.

Sorry but I really can't understand this way of upgrading (and from what I saw it's a common one, so nothing personal).
I'm much more interested in the original ones than the S versions. Of course the S is always better and faster, and maybe sometimes it's "what the original version should have been".

But really when I had my iphone4, I didn't feel the need at all to upgrade to ip4S: I didn't feel the 4 was too slow and SIRI, well, I use it now but wasn't a big deal for me.
Anyway I broke my i4 and had an insurance that refunded me so I decided to buy the 4S instead of the 4 so I can resell it... Well, I didn't feel the need for the 4S when I had the 4, but surely I needed the iphone5 even though I had a 4S (and I was an early adopter of the iphone5).

Really waiting one more year to get a much thiner phone with a big screen would have been a pain for me. As keeping a 3GS for a year when the 4 had a gorgeous retina screen.

Sorry guys, the inovation is not in the S versions.

Thinner, faster processor, better camera, new software features.

Am I talking about the iPhone 5S or the Galaxy S4?

To everyone complaining about the lack of upgrades in the iPhone, that's all Samsung is doing too. Geez. Go enjoy your new "innovative" S4.

Clearly, apple felt that total profits would be higher using stainless steel compared to using titanium.

Whenever you wonder "Why did Apple..." the answer is always the same. Every single time.

Apple did it because they believed that it would increase total profits. Apple does every single thing that they do because they think that doing so will increase total profits. There is only one reason that Apple does anything that it does: They feel that it will increase total profits.

The maximization of total profits is Apple's one and only ultimate goal. Everything and anything else is a means towards that goal, and not a goal in and of itself.

There is nothing devious or mysterious about why Apple does what it does. It's really pretty simple.

You are talking about the Galaxy S4, because the iPhone 5S won't likely be thinner, as it's already borderline thin.

But really, why are you all so black-and-white about this? If you don't like the iPhone for one reason or another, there's more than Samsung. Ever heard of HTC, Sony or Nokia? Ever seen a Sony Xperia Z? It looks like a Sony-style reinterpretation of the Jony-style iPhone 4. A nicely done one.

I'd take that every day over a Galaxy S4.

Actually the stock price didn't even hit $500 the last time Apple announced an "S" version of iPhone in late 2011. When the iPhone 4S was announced, Macrumors and the internet were full of people who declared the 4S as a big failure that'll quickly kill Apple in the midst of HTC One X and Galaxy S3. The similar reaction was also observed in 2009 with 3GS.

The more interesting question will be when Apple will be willing to branch out the screen size for a larger model. However who knows if that'll happen concurrently with the iPhone or will slot in later in the year, if at all.
I think you are fooling yourself if you think the reaction to the 5S is anywhere close to that of the 4S. Sure the 4S was the beginning of the disappointment in iPhone releases. The 5 extended it. If this is really the 5S it will take it to a new level.

Ah

I still maintain that if the 5S is the same as the 5 in form factor and just has a faster CPU and improved camera and fingerprint sensor they might just call it a 5s for "security" and "sight" - the retina camera and the fingerprint reader for security.

Doesn't sound very exciting to me so much.

Titanium is harder to manufacture & work with so its more expensive. Will titanium be in sufficient quantities to make use in all its devices?, maybe not. Even if it could, it might drive the price of titanium even further.

Many things Apple could do to to increase profits. Could use plastic instead of steel, so why don't they?!? Because somethings Apple won't do in the name of profit alone.

The one I have is the MK808B. I think it's made by Rikomagic, but I can't remember for sure. There are dozens of different models of these things now and they're quite cheap. I think the one I have is about $50. Pretty neat little thing but the quality of these things is generally average at best (standard heat and wifi type issues). Some of them can be rooted to run Linux.

papa steve would have never allowed this!!!! Down with apple!!!!

I'm going back to my Iphone 3g in protest!!

Yes, I do realize that the 5S will likely be the same dimensions & weight as the 5. :)

I was merely referring to the fact that people complain when Apple makes a thinner, lighter, faster iPhone with a better camera and new software features. Yet Samsung makes a thinner, lighter, faster Galaxy with a better camera and new software features (that are, uh, inspired) and suddenly it's "revolutionary" and people want to leave their iPhones.

Choice isn't a bad thing, but I don't like the double standard.

The bottom line is that iphone users are stuck in the ecosystem. If apple licensed ios nobody would buy apple phones. You have to buy the next mediocre iphone or keep your old mediocre iphone. You don't have a choice. Android users have a choice and that is the beauty of it all.
