As has been stated numerous times before, and as Ventilatedbrain here has pointed out: the software is crippling just the most optimized and performance driven hardware that is on the iPhone 5....c'mon apple 4 months and still now keynote announcement? Really???? I hope I don't have to wait until WWDC to find out about the mythical iOS 7 (i know its not mythical in its actual sense, but nothing has been announced of when it will be released, so it could be thought of as being mythical in this sense)....

WWDC wasn't announced until April last year.

Wow, you people who need a brand new form every single year need to seek help. Let alone the people who need a new form factor every 9 or 10 months; there is no help for such folks.

I have one of those sitting next to me (I got an eval unit from my employer) - in short: I hate it. It's rather slow compared to the iPhone 5 and the N4 (apps load really slowly, native apps are fine but 80% or more of the apps in the store are Android ports which lag massively, battery life is still appalling - the phone goes down 5% per hour even when the radios are off - and that's with the latest update - before it was even worse).

Definitely no competitor.

That's a bummer. They looked really promising... :(

"hardware" or "design / build quality"? In terms of HW specs, most Android phones have been ahead of Apple for years now. In terms of design and build quality, the only phone on the market that bests (and even surpasses) Apple HW is the HTC One now and they can't produce even minimal numbers of devices and have to postpone over and over again. I'd go with a One any time if I were sure that HTC will release timely updates. However, the phone already comes with an obsolete version of Android out of the box and is very unlikely to be upgraded within the next 12 months.

I just sold my iPhone 5 because the screen was simply too small for my needs (I do all my reading on my phone). Also, I had to find out that the Nexus 4 has a considerably better keyboard (also an area where Apple used to be way ahead of the competition and is now lacking behind because zero improvements were made in the last 5 years while Google massively improved on their keyboard) and while the UI in general is equally fluid on both the iPhone 5 and the N4, I find that applications load much faster on the N4. What I'm going to miss is the iPhone's camera, which is drastically better than the N4's - but that's a small trade-off for me.

The One isn't even out yet is it? All the reports of people testing it out had it on an outdated version of Android, but I figured by time they actually shipped it would be updated. Even if the One came out with an outdated version of Android and someone offered me the chance to trade in my iPhone and keep my plan with a One I would.

Screen size is my biggest gripe with the iPhone as well. I don't need a screen size the same as the iPad mini, but something larger than credit card would be nice. I get stuck places with my phone and no iPad and trying to read on the iPhone is a pain. That brings on my issue of Apple not letting you download an iBooks app for OSX as I usually have my Air somewhere close by. But everyone knows if iBooks came out for OSX there would be less iPad sales.

If I switched over though it would be for the One.

Looking forward to the highly innovative sapphire crystal camera lens version 2!

Innovation is dead

If that is it from Apple then it will be a dead duck on arrival.

Up until the jump from 4 to 5 I have been very eager to get the latest iPhone but when the 5 came out it really did not rock my world. To the point I put the fact I would need to replace all my chargers and sign up for another 2 years with AT&T as a deal breaker.

Innovation is currently dead in the phone market.

It's out in some markets (Germany for, example - but it's only available on the O2 network). A minimal number of unbranded devices are out as well - but I'd say most of them went out to reviewers. And no, Android 4.1 is here to stay for the One - HTC said that they'd eventually upgrade it to 4.2, but there's no timetable for that.

Well there you go... The iPhone 5, released 6 months ago, has a bigger screen than all previous models. A bigger screen, ONCE.

Except that going from stamp-sized to credit-card sized is a joke. Especially since they only made it taller rather than wider, which doesn't help in any way. I'd even say that calling the iPhone 5 a 4" device is a bit of a joke. It's rather a 3.5"S.

Someone help me understand how the "Third Quarter" and "Shipping June/July" matches up? If the fiscal year is Jan - Dec, then the third quarter would be July - August. If it is like most companies, the fiscal year is April - March, and the third quarter is October - December.

So which is it, third quarter of the calendar year, in which case July - August?
June?
Third quarter fiscal year, in which case it is October - December?

Come on Macrumors, try to at least be informative and consistent. It doesn't matter if it is a rumor, if someone says "third quarter" and then says "June" or "July" you should ask for a clarification...otherwise it is just someone pulling crap out of the air (or from worse places)

IMHO, If Apple lets Samsung have a 6 month lead with the s4 which the rumor mill of a minor spec upgarde to the 5s churns it is a huge HUGE mistake....but then again, what the heck does "third quarter" mean????

typically contracts are 2 years, so we have two patterns.
iphone -> 3gs -> 4s -> 5s
and
iphone 3g -> iphone 4 -> iphone 5

I don't think it's Apple's intention to encourage users to upgrade every single year, it's just for those that are on the offset +1 year that need a reason to renew their contract.

Except that these phones aren't just targeted at existing iPhone owners. Presumably Apple wants to convert Android and other users too. Releasing incremental updates every other year might be fine if only existing iPhone owners were buying the new phones, but they aren't.

Yeah, when apple was still approaching a stock price of 800$, it was probably the right thing to do. Today, however? Not so much.

Actually the stock price didn't even hit $500 the last time Apple announced an "S" version of iPhone in late 2011. When the iPhone 4S was announced, Macrumors and the internet were full of people who declared the 4S as a big failure that'll quickly kill Apple in the midst of HTC One X and Galaxy S3. The similar reaction was also observed in 2009 with 3GS.

The more interesting question will be when Apple will be willing to branch out the screen size for a larger model. However who knows if that'll happen concurrently with the iPhone or will slot in later in the year, if at all.

3GS, S = Speed
4S, S = Speed & Siri
5S, S= Singerprint Sensor & Speed

afraid that this 5S won't be enough for people to upgrade let alone switch from other platform. hopefully iOS 7 will bring something new.

Personally I'd rather they skip the S, give us a little innovation and put a new 6 out next year. Bigger screen, changes to iOS, give Siri a French accent. That kind of thing. Throwing a letter on the end of the name and asking us for another $500 is getting old. Not just with Apple, but all the phone makers who want to take baby steps and charge us premium.

1. Not everyone likes big screens, I know people that prefer the 3.5" instead of 4" screen. And 2. They are not asking you to spend anything, if you are happy with what you have keep it..
But 3. I agree, they need to actually do something, Steve must be turning in his grave watching samsung take over like this.

Wait those who say Apple isn't innovating by believing these reports are somehow oblivious to the fact that it could come equipped with a fingerprint sensor? And even then, that supposed innovation doesn't sound too impressive; I'll continue to take consistency over gimmicks. (Although I obviously wouldn't know it's functions)

But I'm still laughing at those who say the GS IV actually looks good.

Given the recent Samsung spec news with their latest phone I would not be surprised if Apple releases an all new iPhone in June, along with upgrades to the 5. Thus the rumors of 2 iPhone models.

I wouldn't mind a screen bigger than 4" but not too big as I'd prefer an iPad for tablet work.

Except that these phones aren't just targeted at existing iPhone owners. Presumably Apple wants to convert Android and other users too. Releasing incremental updates every other year might be fine if only existing iPhone owners were buying the new phones, but they aren't.

Plus, lots of people buy unlocked from Apple on release day and run a sim-only plan alongside with no commitment.

Well that is either disappointing or encouraging, I can't decide which. By time my plan is up it should be onto 4.2 and I could pick one up. But with the rates of new Android updates 4.3 will be out so I will still be one behind. Who knows, by then I may be wowed by iOS 7 and the most likely still under 4.5" screen size :( Up it to 6 inches, market it as the Micro iPad and call it a day.

Anyone get the feeling that Apple has something up it's sleeve for the next upgrade?

Competition is heating up and Apple knows they have to step their game up...

I strongly believe that we will be wowed this year with their advances with iOS7 and the next iPhone upgrade.

I really hope so.
