How is apple supposed to prevent something from breaking if a stupid guy - even if he did it unintentionally and out of naivity - is applying force to an object?

my point was that it could have been a manufacturing flaw but the majority of people in this thread immediately believed it must be a user error without having all the facts.

I've sat with my 5S in my back pocket multiple times since launch and this didn't happen. (And I weigh more than 140. Won't say how much more but MORE). Clearly a defective phone. I can't believe they gave you so much flack but I think it's the people taking advantage of the system who make it harder for honest returns.

What facts do you need? Besides a skinny guy who is wrapping a phone around his bottom by sitting on it? Then doing surprised about the fact that it bent magically or thinking apple built hydraulics in to it to bend it post sale.

I'm not sure why all the emphasis on the back pocket? I find the front pocket just as constraining when sitting down. Have you tried to fish change out of your front pocket while sitting down? For me it's nearly impossible to do so without straightening my leg. That same stress applied to a thin aluminum phone, whether front or back pocket, would be very damaging.

Maybe my pants are too tight?

could have been a flaw in the aluminium case by the volume buttons. Like I say, even Apple can't achieve 100% perfection when manufacturing phones.

Just because it doesn't happen to you, doesn't mean it's defective. Sitting on different types of surfaces, for different lengths, and even how you sit can effect this.

My 5 bent like that but I would sit on it in a rambunctious manner. I don't put my 5S in my back pocket at least for the time being until the newness mystique where's off. So probably in a month lol. Last thing I would do is blame apple for my dangerous lifestyle ;)

Don't forget the original packaging...

Indeed not, I never claimed they were and expectations can be too high. However that doesn't mean that Apple are perfect.

for it to apparently happen within three days suggests that a flaw could also be responsible.
...
Let's not forget the original packaging that the phone comes in. The iPhone has to fit inside a very tightly-formed box that would probably not close up or be properly sealed if it was already "bent" during the manufacturing process. So it would look pretty obvious if it was a defect and already bent out of the box. So to apply some physical process to have it mysteriously "bend" over the first three days suggests less than brilliant handling of the object to me. *sigh*

Lets assume this for a moment. So how do you explain the wrinkles on the screenshield in the same area? Maybe, by chance also the gorilla glas had a structural weaknes in the same area and got bent by a breath of a fresh air? Or maybe even by gravity... sounds legit

This happens a lot when you sit on your phone I have seen this across the board not just apple. Lucky the screen didn't break. If the phone was bent like that out of the box you would have noticed it just saying (see cracks on screen). The fact that apple replaced it seems like good customer serves. Not saying that you couldn't get a defective iPhone out of the box but if it was really warped that much you would have noticed it.

well I assumed that was because the metal had bent, the glass had in that area too.

Never mind, clearly 100% of products that Apple manufacture are 100% flaw free. Apple truly are perfect.

Why you so strongly warranting and advocating that guy is it your pseudonym by chance?

After the 4S you can no longer accidentally sit on it. 4S was the last iPhone with that kind of strength and durability.

I NEVER have my iPhone in my rear pocket anyways. Only front pockets or hoodie pockets. That's an absolute no no.

Not saying apple couldn't have made a defective product but with the cracks on the screen you would have noticed that out of the box not three days latter. Or I could be totally stupid and missed something here.

My point was that a flaw in the phone would then have been aggravated by use. Clearly the damage in the pictures would have been noticed if that was how the phone was found in the box. A pre-existing flaw around the volume button - the phone's weakest point - would quickly propagate under any stress at all - not just being sat on.

For everyone that's purchasing a new iPhone 5S, check and make sure the phone is not bend even slightly. If it looks like it's bend slightly, it's probably not your imagination and it's defective.

Defective? How is it defective? You sit your ass on it and bent it and it's a defect? I suggest you look up the definition of defective. The phone owner is defective.

Maybe it's the Uri Geller Edition.

You need to change the title of this this thread. The iphone didn't warp. You and your friend are ------s. Blame apple though.

I sat on my IP5 everyday for the 3 months I owned it because I "back-pocket" also. In the jeep, at Starbucks, etc. I never thought anything of it and it was still pristine the day I sold it. Granted, I carried mine in an OB.
