iPhone 6 - 5.5 inch Is A Must

Im pretty sure apple will announce the 4.7 inch and 5.5 version in september during their long awaited keynote. But the 5.5 is an absolute must.

First let me say if iOS was able to run on other devices (natively) then I would have bought a galaxy note 3 a long time ago and ran iOS on it.

The 4.7 version is not an exciting prospect, one must ask what can a diagonal enlargement of 0.7 inch provide to the end user? Ultimately we will continue using facebook, snapchat, whatsapp etc.

I will be buying a new iPhone soon but I cannot justify 800-900£ of expense on a slightly bigger iPhone, it simply is not worth it. However the 5.5 certainly will be.

Its been embarrassing for so long, pulling out a little 4 inch phone when everyone else has got 5-5.7 inch phones.

Credit to apple, they find a way of making their product desirable after they update the hardware. I really like the macbook air and the pro but im a windows user so I cant buy it unless windows is PROPERLY supported on macs.

However iphone sales will start slowing down. It will get to a point like PCs have where there is enough processing power to do the tasks everyone needs to do, like whatsapp snapchat facebook etc and there is little benefit to be had from additional horsepower unless you are a gamer. Funny how these chinese manufacturers are releasing quadcore 5 inch phones at 10% of the price of say galaxy s5.

The 5.5 inch will be the true flagship device. The 4.7 will always be seen as inferior.

Anything apple makes above 4" will be too big because of their enormous bezels. The 5.5" will be as big as a 6" phone. The 4.7" is as big as my 5.2" G2.

Size alone won't cut it. It needs functionality like the Note 3. Multi window, tab view etc..

I disagree, the Nokia Lumia and the Nokia 1520 are larger phones and don't have multiple windows yet they're just as useful.

----------

if i can get a full 1 or 2 days battery with the 5.5 inch it will be a must buy.

If I can get 2 days out of my iPhone 5c's battery I'd be shocked

I don't think your car analogy is similar. Cars do the same thing, yet some look nicer/go faster/have a better image etc. With an iPhone, or premium smartphone, you are buying a phone with a host of features you don't need. It's like buying a Swiss Army Knife when all you want is a bottle opener.

Erm.

Phones do the same thing, yet some phones like nicer, are faster, have a better image.

Yes it's exactly like buying a Swiss Army knife when all I want is a bottle opener. But given that's it's my money I can chose to buy the Swiss Army knife because I prefer it.

Which is exactly what I did when buying my phone. I looked at the available phones and thought. Wow. I like the iPhone. It does all I need and plenty more, I'll buy one.

I don't quite understand what peoples issue is with that. Simply because my phone doesn't replace my TV, tablet, iPod, laptop and games console I should have got myself a cheap Nokia?

As I said earlier. People very rarely buy things that do JUST what they need and nothing else.

I like the iPhone. Simple.

Why do people buy Audi cars when a second hand Nissan car will do the same for a fraction of the cost?

I'm amused that I'm being treated like I'm less entitled to own an iPhone because I want my phone to be a phone, ie used for communications. Not a media/games/tasks device.

Relax. No one is saying you aren't "entitled" to the phone you want. It just seems a little odd to me when someone says that they only care about talk/text and get a phone with a ton of premium features that they don't care about. So I usually ask why...I really don't understand.

You say you simply like it and that's great, but my question was what do you like about it beyond what you stated were your "needs". My assumption (maybe it's a poor one?) is that there has to be something, or you would have gotten a less expensive phone.

I've never met anyone who has bought an Audi and said, "I only care about getting back to work and back. I really don't care about the smoothness of the ride, the nice interior, the quality build, the safety features, the name brand, etc etc."

I like iOS. I tried android. I didn't like it. I like the simplicity if iOS. Same with windows OS. I tried it. I didn't like it.

Were I to get a cheaper smartphone. It wouldn't have iOS. If apple released a budget phone. I'd buy that.

That's reason enough for me to buy an iPhone.

It's odd to me that someone's motives are questioned when they bought a phone, to be, a phone.

It's a point of contact. People can call. Text. Facebook. Tweet me etc. I don't need it want to watch movies, listen to music, play games etc on my phone. I have other dedicated devices that do those things better than my phone does. So why would I not want to use the devices that do things better?

There's definitely nothing wrong with preferring iOS over android, I do as well and I have an iPhone 5S and LG G3. There's also nothing wrong with using only a limited about of features on your smartphone.

I'm really not questioning your motives or trying to imply that you shouldn't have the phone you want. It's just strange to me that you would have a phone preference at all when the dialer, messaging, and Facebook apps seem to work pretty much the same across all four major platforms.

That's not a false premise; he's making a thesis statement which he then tries to lay out a case for. Not to say I agree with him. Just sayin.

If thats a thesis statement then my english professor lied to me WTF!!!

OP, you're saying that a 0.7" difference is meaningless yet a further 0.8" is absolutely necessary?

I agree in a roundabout way. We should stick with 4". Better yet, build a truly small phone around 3.5.

To me it depends on weight differences, one-hand usability & general feel more than the small difference in screen size. I totally "get" that Apple has kept their phones virtually the same width for so long, so that most every function is reachable with the users thumb. Apple mobile devices have always been perfect for one-handed use.

That said, I can see where the 4.7" size will be almost the same. However, the 5.5" may not. I have played with friends Galaxy S5's and HTC M8's that are running 5" & 5.2" screens, and they are danged hard to use with one hand unless you have huge hands. The Note 3 is impossible to do that with, and that's almost the same size as the 5.5" iPhone.

Given the extra size of the 5.5" screen, and the added weight that there is sure to be with the extra real estate...I'm thinking the 4.7" will be perfect, at least for me.

Of course, that's the reason they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream...:)

I too prefer the 4.7" form factor but there is at least 1 factor that is still a variable that could sway me to 5.5"...that is the camera.

Some rumors have noted a superior camera on the 5.5" and since I do some video editing on a prosumer DSLR it would be nice to have the better of the two portable phone cameras on the next iPhone.

Any thoughts/insight into this?

Different View

The reason I am drawn to the 5.5 screen is not only the screen size but other specs that Apple will probably not include in the 4.7 phone. For me, that is the in crease in storage capacity. I believe that we will finally see a 128gb phone and it will only be available in the 5.5 inch phone. I also think there will be a few other features that will only be in the bigger phone and Apple will distinguish the two phone by these features and not only the screen size. Any thoughts.

I think it says a lot that in various threads, people don't care if the camera is upgraded or if there's more RAM in the iPhone 6...BUT if the 5.5" has a better spec than the 4.7" they'll want that :)
Seems to me that 'having the best' is the most important thing, even if peeps don't need it.

Battery battery battery please

You'll be unliucky. Apple will say that they've crammed more power into the device and thinned it down, but it will still return the same battery life as the outgoing model. How amazing they are etc.

Yeah, see, I think many of the people clamoring for a 5.5" will end up returning theirs once they get a chance to use it. It wasn't until I get a Note that I realized how often I use my phone with one hand and how incredibly unusable the Note is in that way.

We'll see though. I'm sure the 5.5" will sell incredibly well. It's been long overdue.

Agreed the Note was awesome at first. But then I just got sick of the size quickly.

I get embarrassed too. The only difference is that I am embarrassed watching someone using a tablet sized device as a phone. Well, to be more accurate, I get a laugh every time I see it.

Hopefully, I will still be able to buy a reasonably sized phone, for a long time... If not, then it WILL be me who's embarrassed every time I whip out my tablet to make a phone call or crush some candy.

Nobody is disagreeing that seeing someone make a phonecall on a phablet looks stupid. I don't want a phablet, I just want a large phone.
Useability is of more importance to me than being able to slide something in a tight jeans pocket, or possibly looking stupid whilst making a call. A 4.9" to 5.5" phone, if designed correctly with minimal bezels, is not a phablet.
