I get embarrassed too. The only difference is that I am embarrassed watching someone using a tablet sized device as a phone. Well, to be more accurate, I get a laugh every time I see it.
Hopefully, I will still be able to buy a reasonably sized phone, for a long time... If not, then it WILL be me who's embarrassed every time I whip out my tablet to make a phone call or crush some candy.
Its been embarrassing for so long, pulling out a little 4 inch phone when everyone else has got 5-5.7 inch phones.
Im pretty sure apple will announce the 4.7 inch and 5.5 version in september during their long awaited keynote. But the 5.5 is an absolute must.
First let me say if iOS was able to run on other devices (natively) then I would have bought a galaxy note 3 a long time ago and ran iOS on it.
The 4.7 version is not an exciting prospect, one must ask what can a diagonal enlargement of 0.7 inch provide to the end user? Ultimately we will continue using facebook, snapchat, whatsapp etc.
I will be buying a new iPhone soon but I cannot justify 800-900£ of expense on a slightly bigger iPhone, it simply is not worth it. However the 5.5 certainly will be.

Credit to apple, they find a way of making their product desirable after they update the hardware. I really like the macbook air and the pro but im a windows user so I cant buy it unless windows is PROPERLY supported on macs.
However iphone sales will start slowing down. It will get to a point like PCs have where there is enough processing power to do the tasks everyone needs to do, like whatsapp snapchat facebook etc and there is little benefit to be had from additional horsepower unless you are a gamer. Funny how these chinese manufacturers are releasing quadcore 5 inch phones at 10% of the price of say galaxy s5.
The 5.5 inch will be the true flagship device. The 4.7 will always be seen as inferior.
I would love a 5.5 iphone. Big is great. With that said, it can still be used one handed depending on how it's designed. Look at the lg g3. I can use that easily one handed.
Aside from the fact that I disagree with everything you say... Windows is properly supported on Macs, been running windows on macs for over 5 years now. I don't know where you got the idea that they are not supported properly.
What are you talking about? that's completely subjective, even if it was just a screen with no bezels; then people with small hands still can't reach the top corners with their thumbs. I don't want to hold my phone like it's an iPad. Because you know.. it's not...
Even the iPad Mini has an 8" screen, so how can a 4.7 or 5.5" phone be considered a similar size?
You're missing the point. My iPhone is a phone, I want take it out of my pocket, use one hand explicitly, and be able to put it back into my pocket without ever having to use another hand. A 5.5 inch phone would disrupt that process.
You have big hands, maybe this allows you to use 5.5 inch phones with 1 hand. Sadly, not all of us have this genetic privilege, and therefore prefer smaller sized iPhones. I don't get what is so hard to understand here, should I be buying a phone that is too big for my hands to use?

You don't find that as childish as someone that is embarrassed by using or seeing someone use a small phone? Honest question.
The difference between the original poster's statement and mine is: The OP feels embarrassed because he doesn't have a device that is currently in vogue. He's not part of the current trend. I classify this as an envy based emotion.
On the other side is me: I feel that people look really stupid with these large devices held next to their head. Is it childish that I feel this way? I don't think so. I just think it looks comical.
Please keep in mind I believe that we should "live and let live". If something makes you happy, then that's what you should be doing. It shouldn't matter what others think.
Hope I answered your question...
There are bigger issues in life than to be worried what other folk might think about the size of the screen on your phone! Its been embarrassing for so long, pulling out a little 4 inch phone when everyone else has got 5-5.7 inch phones.

A lot of mention of a 5.5" taking away from iPad mini sales but that isn't entirely a bad thing.
If someone was going to buy an iPhone and an iPad but just gets a bigger iPhone then yes that doesn't help apple.
However there are a couple things to consider.
1. 5.5" iPhone will likely have a higher price tag. With less actual hardware sold (iPhone + iPad) that could work on to be about the same money made and even more profit for Apple.
2. It's better to have competition with yourself then it is to have competition with actual competitors. Meaning if Apple doesn't offer it someone may just get it from a company that does ie Samsung Note. That is what hurts Apple because they made no sale at all.
Yes it's exactly like buying a Swiss Army knife when all I want is a bottle opener. But given that's it's my money I can chose to buy the Swiss Army knife because I prefer it.

There are some people (Not me) that would prefer to have one device instead of having to purchase both an iPhone and an iPad. And that's exactly why Apple should not give into that and stick with what is working.
Or just buy a bigger iPad. The mini is lacking, it's bigger than a phone but not as big as a proper tablet.
