I'm borderline an Apple fanboy but I can't justify switching in my iPhone 5 yet in Canada.
- I got a brand new iPhone 5 at the end of my 2 year AppleCare warranty.
- iOS 8 works perfectly on the iPhone 5. No lagging or any slowness in practical use. Other than games, can the A8 chip be used to its potential?
- TouchID in the 5S wasn't enough of a motivation for unlocking or password to justify a new iPhone purchase. It makes sense for high security applications like Apple Pay though.
- NFC payments would have sold me on the iPhone 6 but ApplePay isn't available in Canada.
- The iPhone 6 screen size is attractive but both phones are not only larger, but also heavier than the iPhone 5. Less portability kills the screen size advantage for me.
Have we reached a point where speed on iPhones are more than sufficient for most popular applications? An A8 chip isn't in practical terms much better than an A6 unless you're playing processor heavy games.
There's only one thing that would sell me on a bigger iPhone. If it would be my "most of the time phone" but when I really need portability, I'd have another device. Which brings me to the Apple Watch.
Although I've been waiting for a product like the Apple Watch for years, I'm going to pass on the 1st edition. By Christmas 2015, an update will be out which if the iPad 1 to iPad 2 leap is any indication will be a substantial improvement, probably having at least a 3G chip for basic Siri/iCloud/iMessage applications without your iPhone nearby.
I think I'll wait until the iPhone 6s hoping for ApplePay in Canada by then and likely sapphire screens and better battery and the second AppleWatch will allow me to leave the big iPhone at home for running, going out where I don't want a huge phone in my pocket.
