Same thing that happened to the kid happened to me, but in my case luckily I was opening it close to a table with a tablecloth, so nothing bad has happened. Be careful when opening the box. The shaking of the box to get it to open also dislodges the phone and it will probably fall off when fully removing the top cover. Just use care when opening the box and try to open it over something soft (carpet, bedcover, etc.).

I think the kid was kind of enticed by the reporter to open the box in front of them. I think the tv channel should at least offer to pay for a replacement, etc. if the kid prefers the phone to be replaced. In my case I would be pretty bummed if that had happened to me. Getting a new phone and immediately dropping it and most surely scratching or denting it.

My 2 cents

First, I highly doubt that video is a fake. That site is not going to ruin their reputation for a few measly page clicks. I DOUBT the phone broke apart at all in THIS test. And yes, it broke in the other test.

Secondly, the phone DOES have a high chance of breaking when dropped. There are many factors that go into play. Mineral hardness being one of them. The phone is less likely to break on a less forgiving stone. the first test was more likely done on a harder stone, probably packed tighter (the second looked like manufactured tile). First one was likely less forgiving.

Moral of the story is, be careful with your phone using whatever means you choose. It's NOT indestructible, and it's NOT extremely fragile either. Just be careful...

Now if you don't mind, I have to go wait for UPS.... where the h**l are they?

They only care about money/hits.

And, like I said, they might be bucking for cushy jobs at Apple -- after all, Apple rewarded AnandTech in this manner...

Right, how could we have missed the cushy job opportunities awaiting anyone who fakes a drop test on YouTube!

Seriously, the amount of tinfoil hats out about this is ridiculous.

Um, okay? Do you feel better that you put me down?

ah, no it doesn't, sorry. i honestly felt trolled, the accusations he made are so clearly not as he described. are you sure you're watching the right section of the video? there are multiple angles throughout, but what he's showing us with his screengrabs are telling nothing about the reality of the motion and images within that section of the video. like claiming there's a 'pointy 5 foot pole' behind someone because they're using a wide-angle lens to capture them in front of the eiffel tower.

nothing came apart. there is no glass flying.

he was on twiiter saying no damage at all the plastic shield prevented scratches and no dents

his twitter handel is @triggywiggy

Someone needs to invent a Cat Flip System that senses when the phone is falling and imparts some inertia (like with several vibrator motors) to make it land on its back. Kinda like how hard drives get parked when a laptop gets moved too quickly.

Wouldn't a drop test where the glass shattered or the phone busted into pieces get more hits? Who wants to watch a drop test where the device has not much more than some nicks or scratches?

Really?

Don't you look at these videos BEFORE you post them MacRumors?

THE DROP TEST VIDEO IS FAKED!

You can even see the glas panel coming off when the 6 plus hits the ground (3:53), then they cut to a completely intact phone.

Oh and glass flying at 3:45.

None of the other angles show it shattering and it looks like there is some flex in the display mount which should be a genius way make it more durable... a crumple zone. As for the first video his "device" could add a lot of momentum by the way he's pulling it down and out effectively throwing it to the ground. Surface conditions could be a big factor as well, but as for faking I don't think thats the case.

Apple got/applied for a patent for one like last year. Too bad they aren't nice enough to include it.

Don't be confused by that little twig-thing lying on the ground.

You have to watch the slo-mo starting at around 3:52. There you can clearly see how the whole bottom part of the front glass gets separated from the body by at least 2mm.

The makers of this video are dishonest.

Android users dishonest? Never..........

Multiple angles could be taken from any time. They could easily grab an angle from another take. That said, I am more inclined to believe Apple than a random forum member.

I'll just wait for more drop test to reserve judgement. Still won't change the fact I'm getting a lifeproof with my 6+

Who cares... people aren't going to go out and drop their phone like this

The second video is someone dropping their phone, accidentally. So yes, people do drop their phones like that, they just don't usually film it.
