How much better?

We could see:

Improved colors
A faster image capture
Faster focusing
Even faster burst shots
Better HDR
Etc...

That's even if Apple implements this.

:D

Also faster app-opening/loading, overall faster performance and a longer battery life.

I was under the impression that the A7 had a long way to go before actually taxing it. Why not just clock it up for ios 8?

I'm confused over news that gushes over each new chip, blogs stating how devs will never fully utilize the new chip, then Apple pops up with a newer one as if the old new one somehow was obsolete?

What's the deal with new chips? Why don't they just clock the A7 up some?

Are there real, physical, reasons? If so, why do we always get so much gushing over the new chip and read how it's years ahead of the game, only to eat it next year?

Yes, and if you read it, you'd know that the iPhone 6 will have better battery life "The 5.5" iPhone will also see a significantly larger battery -- 50% to 70% more watt-hours than the iPhone 5s."

LOL. Apple also says the iPhone 5s got "better" battery life.

And I'm tired of folks assuming that every rumor, sketch etc is true and bashing Apple over them. These we rumors, hold the 'what a dumb frakking move' comments for when Apple actually does it.

Where did I say this rumor is 100% true? Making assumptions again?

Its just Apple's history with some of their devices. Look at the iPad. They are on the fifth generation and guess what, battery life is still rated the exact same as its first generation! I hate Samsung, but this is one thing they did right for their GS4 back when it came out. It was overall thinner than the GS3 and still had a larger capacity battery (~400 mAh IIRC). The battery capacity jump from the iPhone 5 to 5s was a joke.

We need the actual battery technology to change... the instant charge 2000% battery has been invented but it's going to take time to commercialise.

Totally agree.

It seems logical that, at some point, Canonical would be planning to release an "Ubuntu Phone" with a fingerprint scanner... assuming they can go back in time and actually PRODUCE THE FIRST MODEL - the world's first phone made entirely of unobtanium.

It seems Apple snapped up all the sapphire, and Ubuntu are sulking because their imaginary product needed it for the imaginary screen, and because they were planning to use it for a fingerprint scanner in their next imaginary iteration. Shame really.

I think I'll bet on Apple, actually, considering the prospects... :p

great mock ups. torn between both sizes though... ill be upgrading from an s3 which had to be repaired twice already (learned my lesson about samsung phones).

anyway, needs one thing... LED INDICATOR LIGHT

i know most of you hate it (for whatever reason, i think its still clean looking, gives it a bit of personality, and i don't have to turn my screen on everytime).

so if you guys could write to apple expressing interest in future phones containing LED indicators, that be great.

Did you know that you can set the LED flash to indicate incoming alerts? That's saved a few cents on the BOM for sure :)

yes haha, but it is on the back, and i want multiple colors to indicate messages, email, twitter, etc. almost all phones have them now, and i know they don't kill battery life.

No it won't, and yes it is 'nearly' as good. It's pathetic to have 1GB RAM in 2014, my 2012 Nexus 7 has 1GB RAM.

Why are you even comparing RAM across different operating systems that also handle application memory very differently?

Many non-programmers don't understand the intricacies of software optimisation and how it interacts with hardware at a low (or any) level, but still like to project the illusion of expertise, because they've read a spec sheet from a phone store. 1Gb ram & dual core A6 + Objective C != 2Gb ram & quad core <blah> cpu with Java.

What's wrong with just saying "I've no idea", or even saying nothing, if you don't know, seriously.

Euch, Java >_<

BlackBerry allows that... :)

i take it you are one of those who would hate it and consider it tacky haha. i know, i had a blackeberry, i now have an s3 which can display a wide variety of colors. HTC has a pin hole sized LED which looks sharp!

anyway. if apple introduced something like HTC's LED i believe it would not take away from the design.

Not at all, as I have HUGE confidence in Apple to implement it elegantly. I was just saying that, for now, BB (and Android, yeah) have it :)

I think Apple may just have a black screen with a flashing coloured dot in the middle of the LCD... or maybe... who knows? :)

Thanks :)

move of the sleep/wake button from the top of the iPhone to the side, to better facilitate one-handed operation on larger iPhones.

Sounding more and more like the Moto X with every rumor, and that's a good thing. Now if they'd just add Moto X's Active Display feature so you don't even need to use the sleep/wake button...

By the way, I do think there is a chance Apple may finally add an NFC radio/antenna subsystem to the two iPhone 6 models.

Here's the reason why: essentially nobody out there manufactures a point of sale terminal with Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) support. Meanwhile, NFC point of sale terminals are common sights in Japan, South Korea and parts of Europe, and the ISIS consortium is itching to roll out NFC mobile payment systems all across the USA. Also, given the extremely short range of NFC signals, it also means less security issues than with Bluetooth 4.0 signals, which can travel several feet between Bluetooth devices.

With the iPhone 6 models essentially a totally "designed from scratch" design, Apple--especially with new technology available--can now incorporate both NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 support without compromising the thickness of the case of the phone itself.

Yes, clocking the A7 up a bit would help, but only a little bit, since iOS is already butter smooth. Even the old A6 and even the A5 chips handly beat processors in the latest Android smartphones and iOS still runs on them with as little to no lag as possible.

Some physical reasons to change to a new chip (especially size) is the fact that every year, processors and all of our electronics are getting thinner, faster, more efficient and even cheaper. We can fit the entire processing power of NASA's computers from the 1970s to 80s into a chip that is less than one square inch and even that chip would beat the old NASA computers.

In fact (a bit off topic), Nvidia has announced a few weeks ago that their super graphics card that is coming next year or 2016 (I don't remember the details exactly) is supposedly as powerful as "Google Brain," which is a project by Google to mimic the brain. (It states that you would need three of these cards, each a bit longer than the average person's hand.

So don't you worry about future processors from Apple, as they will only get faster and more efficient... until we reach the end of Moore's Law and head into the world of Quantum Physics. :(

:)

No, it doesn't. It's not enabled by default. Which means it doesn't have it.
While it's built into iOS 7 but not enabled, I was reviewing a few logs on my iPhone 5S (running iOS 7.1) today and found the following - any idea what Compression/Decompression/Decompressor refers to?

A7 is better in any way that current SoC used in nexus 5, not speaking about a8 ....

1 Gb in iPhone 6 is just a speculation without any base.
Btw 2012 Nexus 7 has nothing to do with iPhone since it runs a totally different operative system.

So the A8 Chip will probably still be dual-core right, more efficient and slightly higher clock speed? What do you guys think?

I think...
