In the past, has it been possible (on AT&T) to order via apple.com and select Unlimited Data? I've read that the order page on apple.com doesn't list that as an option (even if you currently have it).

Can anyone confirm / deny?

Yes. The T-Mobile Phone is locked to the Carrier. If you want to get this unlocked you need to be a T-Mobile Customer and request the unlock.

So can you unlock the phone asap and normally what does T-Mobile take for an unlock for iPhone?

Likely not tonight. Instore pickups generally require the store to have stock.

But try it. Apple might allow it, however there may not be a guarantee you can get it in the 19th. Rather than pulling from the stock being shipped they might be literally shipping orders to the store individually and thus you could be dealing with fedex delays, etc.

On the UK retail site it says "Pre-order iPhone 6 and have it shipped to you for free, or reserve for pickup in store."

Guess we'll find out when the ordering system goes live.

There are rumours that you will not be able to buy a contract less phone today in the US Apple Store. I just spoke with the Apple Store chat and they confirmed this.

Yes and no. They must let you buy a contract free for tmobile as that carrier has no contracts. And unless Verizon changes the rules they must allow full price Verizon for grandfather unlimited data. To bar those at launch would be a huge PR cock up.

But full price, no line activation phones are generally not allowed the first few days to try to stymie the resellers.

People have done preorders previously with T-Mobile phones, and the phones have been unlocked. There's reality, and there's what everyone is saying, including Apple reps. Even an AT&T full-price phone is unlocked, once you restore it.

That was the case with the 3GS, 4, 4s and 5 when I worked at Apple Retail.

The reason the ARS in Towson did this though was because they got a lot of scalpers buying 5 phones upfront.

My BF says the company is trying this new system to reduce that. Stores can't really stop it unless it's blantant cause the crowds make it hard as hell. But they are wise to some of the tricks and will use extra measures if they see obvious flags.

Does Apple allow preorders to shipped to an Apple Store for pickup?

If so, does anyone have experience with this? Is pickup on 9/19?

I ask because I'm also grandfathered into AT&T unlimited data through my family's plan ON THE OPPOSITE COAST. Just trying to get a feel for my options. Thanks!

I ordered my iPhone 5 at midnight during release day 2 years ago.. I have unlimited data with AT&T. If I remember correctly, there was an option to select if you want to keep your current plan. That was the option I selected and was able to keep my grandfathered unlimited data.

Well then maybe I will do my best to look around in NYC central the 19th or the 20th for an unlocked version or that is maybe just a waste of time. If you check the us website for the 5s, there are a unlocked option but not for the 6.

I seriously hope it's not midnight Pacific US time, everywhere in the world. Otherwise, that's hardly releasing it on the 12th in Australia. It's almost the 13th.

WTF ** how can you put pre-order out with 2 different sizes and have NONE at the store for customers to test out until the release date.

this isn't revolutionary, it's stupid!!!

Exactly! That's why 2 months ago I bought a 5.5 dummy iPhone as well as a 4.7. I'm going with the grandè :)

Then don't preorder. Go to a store next Friday and you can see them.

That's what I would like to do. Pre-order then pick up at the store, but I don't think anyone will know anything until tonight.

Ugh. It really doesn't make any sense. Telstra says pre-orders start at 5.01pm today. Yet, the Apple website for Australia says 8am at Apple stores.

I think you are underestimating pent-up demand for bigger-screen phones that can run iOS, probably by giving the crowd here too much weight in terms of imagining what the masses will do. Even if EVERYONE who visits this site sits it out, that's only a tiny fraction of all iPhone buyers. And now Apple has also opened a big door for the Android crowd that had to have bigger screens so badly they've just dealt with Android to get the bigger screen with iOS.

Myself? I'm in the opposite place. I think demand will exceed supply unlike ever before… even if all of MacRumors users sat this one out to wait to get to see them in hand. But we'll see.

I'd have to agree. I know so many Android users that have said the only reason they don't have an iPhone is the small screen. This will no doubt be the hottest iPhone to date.

This is what I plan to do if the phone is not available for purchase full price unlocked.

This is with AT&T

I will purchase the phone on the NEXT plan, pay for the taxes up front... I'll have to pay the 37.50/ month for 2 months in my AT&T bill... then after 2 months you can just pay for the whole phone and have them unlock it.

This works because I have no urgency to get the phone unlocked right away. Also you are not paying anything more... I already confirmed with AT&T that after 2 billing cycles you can pay the phone off and its yours and unlocked just as if you had purchased it that way up front.

This might work for some of you. Just a suggestion

The iPhone 5S was available for pre-order at midnight UK time. (= 1 am in Germany). Sure that it is different this time?

That wasn't preordering, it was just ordering. 5s went on sale online the same day they were in stores. There were no preorder for the 5s.
