If you don't understand why 2GB is better than 1GB and what it means then you should not be part of the discussion.

2GB is long overdue.

1gb is not enough. Reloading tabs every time I want to switch between them while browsing is annoying. This didn't happen nearly as much on my older S4 with 2gb of RAM.
One of these things is not like the other....

I've been a proponent of 2GB of RAM being necessary for a while now. It's funny how everyone else is just now jumping on board. There used to be only a few of us. I guess you guys are also getting fed up.

The tab reloading is ridiculous. Does it happen on the iPad Air 2? Sometimes—usually after you open more than 12-15 tabs, or after you open 3-4 other apps, perform some tasks and come back to Safari. But I've been pleasantly surprised to do some work in several apps and come back to Safari a day later and have my tab still loaded. It reminds me of my MacBook when it does that. It's stable—as it should be. On my Air 2 I don't have to worry about beginning to write a forum post or whatever, switch to another tab to research something or check a quick email, and then come back and lose everything I wrote. I always copy what I wrote before I switch on my iPhone. You can't tell me that doesn't happen to you guys all the time on your iPhone. My 6 Plus is notoriously bad at reloading things and performing poorly. I'd go back to my iPhone 5 if I hadn't sold it before getting my 6 Plus. I also think that Apple needs to work on fixing Safari. Third party browsers don't experience this problem to the same extent.

What is sad is that by the time the next iPhone comes out, 2GB of ram will probably be a minimum for a decent experience—unless Apple really does optimize the hell out of iOS 9. I seriously hope they do. I keep wondering if it's possible to port RAM compression from OS X, but nobody can answer me to see if that's feasible on a mobile device. Maybe nobody knows outside Apple. I hope they can. Perhaps if Apple wasn't so obsessed with making their devices anorexic, they could put in a slightly larger battery to account for any potential power usage increase from more RAM. It wouldn't take much, and the user experience would be much improved. Besides, as other have mentioned, re-downloading a page over and over must use more energy than powering an extra gigabyte of RAM.

Thanks for proving my point.

no one's got to prove or disprove your 'point'. you're fishing for what you want to hear as long as it coincides with your preconceived bias.

some people defended 1gb ram. many more did not. most didn't care or know enough to formulate an opinion.

Lots of people in here seem to have a wrong view on what RAM actually does. People seem to think it makes the phone "faster" and "more powerful". RAM is short for Random Accessory Memory. It is specially allocated memory for storing system widgets/accessories like Siri and the apps in today-view on the iPhone. (This is probably why they were taking a long time to enable developer created widgets, because they wanted to wait until their iPhones had enough RAM for it). Today the widgets that come with IOS app's only take up a few MB's of memory. This means 1 GB RAM is enough for hundreds of widgets on every iPhone, we don't (at least I don't) need room for another 100 widgets. Android is utilizing this a lot on the home screen that is why they come with more memory.

The thing is, people are complaining about app and tab refreshes due to the lack of RAM, not widgets.

BTW, I've got a 3GS, with a lot less memory, slow CPU, memory and network and come on, even on such a slow poke, reloading is not that bothersome. If it is, maybe you need to carry your own desktop with you ;-) Oh, and Android phones also reload even with 2G of memory...

My Nexus 4 with 2 GB of RAM would reload Chrome if I had more than 4 tabs open and I opened another app.

Still, I think Apple is better at using the hardware of the iPhone than Google was with the Nexus 4.

No... They'll end 16 GB storage and drop back to 8 GB storage by the time we get to 3 GB of RAM.

Totally.. 8GB of storage is vital and necessary. Its almost organic to go backwards, to retreat into the past to bring about the future. Its essential.

this is not a true, nor complete picture of what RAM is and how it affects systems and it's performance.

Random Access Memory is a core concept to computing technology. It is where all programs that are currently running initiate and are running from. this includes widgets, but is not limited to such. All applications and the Operating System itself that are running will use RAM in their processes.

The question is, what happens when iOS runs out of available free RAM? (maybe someone can tell you better, since i'm not versed in iOS's memory handling). But traditional desktop OS's (OSx, Windows and *nix), once physical RAM is saturated, will start to swap portions of itself to some form of physical storage. in the desktop space, this is usually a primary hard drive. (note, that even if RAM is not saturated, OS's will still use portions of physical disk space for memory handling)

The problem with this methodology, is that hard drive performance is fractions of actual RAM performance. Even modern SSD's, as fast as they are do not have the same bandwith and response times that RAM does.

if iOS does swap to local storage when memory is saturated, this would be a performance impact. How much, I can't answer you that (Since i don't know if it does, i'm applying general computing knowledge).

you can see this in practice on your desktop/laptop in OSx by looking at your system monitor's memory page and looking at the "App pressure" and "Swap Usage" statistics.

In this particular instance, amount of RAM is going to impact system performance.

Another way that low ram might impact iOS performance is by shutting down the applications and removing them from memory until either the application is restarted or switched back to. This would also impact performance as reading the application off the internal storage would be slower than if the program was still resident in memory.

How this relates to the iPhone, if 1gb is insufficient for the system, applications and widgets to stay loaded and it forcibly makes the OS swap to disk or shut programs down in the background that you might wish to remain running, then an upgrade of the RAM is a welcome addition.

Also: Android uses more memory on total for a number of different factors. Constant widgets is only one portion of it. Android apps use more memory because of their Java nature. They require running within a runtime that in itself, uses more memory. It's not worse, it's just a different type of implementation with it's own pros/cons.

Does that mean I can't put in a cheap prepaid sim when I'm traveling in other countries? This would be a no go.

No. It's an actual SIM... it's just programmable. It's especially nice in the iPad. All are unlocked, so they narrow down to 1 SKU, instead of packaging X number of devices with AT&T SIMs installed, Y number of T-Mobile SIMs installed, and a couple hundred with Sprint SIMs installed. Now they just send it with that single SIM for all of them, you pick. Want Verizon instead? Pop it out and put in a Verizon SIM.

Functionally, it's still the same ol' Nano SIM you can pop out at any time.

I would rather they forgo replacing the system chip (A9 or what have you) and focus on things like RAM and multitasking. The current CPU is very capable and everything else bottlenecks it. Mostly a lack of RAM and an OS that has a ton of artificial delays.

Lack of multitasking is one of the shortcomings that really hurt Apple in the early 90s. It's interesting to see them let it slip again.

Lots of people said 1GB was enough and people who complained were dismissed on a regular basis by some. Apple knows what they are doing, iOS doesn't need more RAM, why would you want to have 3 tabs open, etc. etc.

Yep. Just like there were people on here who said an increase in the screen resolution wasn't necessary b/c the 4yr old retina display was good enough. 720p? 1080p? Nobody needs that! If you wanna watch HD, use your TV! A phone shouldn't be used for that! It goes back to what I've been saying...you have people on here who refuse to let the iPhone advance. "Nobody needs *insert next gen awesome feature* b/c current 2-4yr old feature is good enough"

Nobody needs a phone! we should all be communicating with fire signals. Why do we need anything faster :p

The system chip is often what enables things like better multitasking and better memory management though. For example, memory compression, or compatibility with faster types of RAM. That said I don't expect the A9 to be a huge improvement over the A8.

I'm not fishing for anything, I stated my opinion, and his post was a good example of what I said.

Yep, same thing with the screen resolution, but the RAM detracted from the performance and user experience.

I love it. Apple comes out with phabllet and times changes. Apple increases ram, time changes again.

Funny though how a lot of "our" opinions shift right with what Apple is offering now or is likely to be offering soon. I have seen passionate arguments about 1GB being plenty. Since that is what Apple offers right now, you can look through this thread and see people still arguing that. And since this rumor implies Apple is going to 2GB, you can see other people arguing how great that will be.

At one point, "we" argued 3.5" was a perfect screen size and all the other, larger-screens were "abominations", "stupid", "need special pants with bigger pockets", "man purses" and "fragmentation". Then, Apple went to 4" and a changed aspect ratio which introduced fragmentation and it was "shut up and take my money" and all other sizes were "abominations" , "stupid" and "99% don't want a phablet", etc. Then, Apple went bigger and again, "shut up and take my money", "best iPhone ever", etc. Where does all that passion against whatever Apple doesn't offer now go when Apple does roll out their incarnation of it? And where are those special pants with bigger pockets and man purses?

NFC was a "joke", a "gimmick", "why would anyone ever want to" and so on before Apple implemented it. Then, it was "I'm boycotting stores that won't accept Apple Pay" and a flurry of demands that other stores and banks get on board or risk losing "my" business. So was it really a joke or only a joke until Apple would incorporate it?

720p was "good enough" when :apple:TV 2 was the current model (even when pretty much everything else had long since gone 1080p). "1080p is a gimmick", "until everyone everywhere has the bandwidth", "the chart", and so on was slung to no end against those who longed for a 1080p :apple:TV. Then, Apple rolled out a 1080p version and all those passionate pro-720p arguments just evaporated.

Retina was "must have" on an iPad but not necessary for the iPad Mini (first generation) when that was the way Apple chose to roll both out. A 9.7" screen had to be retina but a 7.9" screen did not need it. "We" argued passionately for retina and against retina at the same time as it fit the split as Apple offered both. Then, when mini 2 rolled out with retina, all that had argued how a 7.9" screen didn't need retina vanished... or "evolved with the times".

An iSight camera in gen 1 iPad made absolutely no sense and those who wanted it were "stupid" and "trolls": "why would anyone want to look up my nose while I video chat?", "you would get dizzy from the instability" and on and on. Then Apple rolls out iPad 2 keying around FaceTime and it was "shut up and take my money", "can't wait to FaceTime", etc.

How "we" rationalize all that flip flopping is one of two ways: either we 1) ignore it as if "we" never argued against whatever change Apple just made or we 2) try to spin some variation of "evolving with the changing times." #2 has some merit but it's funny how "our" views will tend to evolve right along with exactly whatever Apple decides they want to push now or soon. It would seem that someone who could make a passionate argument about 1GB being plenty, or "720p is good enough" or 3.5" or 4" is "perfect" would continue to feel that way even if Apple switched to something they've previously bashed to no end. But we don't. Instead, "we" will magically evolve right in line with exactly what Apple chooses to offer now or likely soon.

It's "stupid" while Apple doesn't offer it but then it's "shut up and take my money" when they do. One might argue that Apple is simply amazing at delivering exactly what "we" want right when our wants "evolve with the times" but others might argue the many variants of iSheep... that Apple could roll out iPoop and it would be "shut up and take my money" and "I'm already in line" and "best poop ever".

Step back to barely a year before NFC or when the first rumors of bigger-screen iPhones hit and you'll see tremendous bashing of both with plenty of "go buy Android, troll" for those who dared to express desire for what would soon come. Then the rumors pile up and "we" start to believe Apple really is going to change into the "abominations" and our view tends to become "wait and see" or "can't wait". Then Apple announces and it's "Shut up and take my money" and "best <innovation> ever"... even over the course of as little as 1 year. Amazing how Apple knows what we will want right when we'll want it... or iSheep who will want whatever Apple decides to roll out.

Myself? 1GB has long been too little for iDevices. Except for the money made by key strategic partners on burning data with lots of reloading, it's in the realm of ridiculous to have a 64bit multitasking OS for a couple of years constrained by only 1GB. Glad to see that Apple might be finally stepping this up. I wonder if all those who have passionately argued how 1GB is plenty, "lazy programmers", "battery burn" and so on will still be arguing those things against Apple when Apple rolls out a 2GB iPhone? (rhetorical- see many examples above)

This actually does happen on my 6+ from time to time, and it's annoying AF tbh.

I think you hit most of the key points in this post. This mirrors what I have read here on a daily basis for the past 4 years.

Nobody needs a phone! we should all be communicating with fire signals. Why do we need anything faster :p

Screw cell phones! We should all be using two cups and a string! Sad thing is it would probably still get better reception than Sprint.

The :apple: iCup. Coming soon.

One of these things is not like the other....

It drives me utterly insane, and while I can't say absolutely that I will be getting an iPhone this year (S6 edge and Note 5 temptation), I can say without question that if the iPhone 6S doesn't have 2GB of RAM, I will not consider it for even a second.

2GB of RAM at least makes it a contender.

I wear an iCup when I play contact sports... going to sue for copyright.

you and the person you quoted are simply cynics. that's the end of story. you hear what you want to hear. claiming that the minority of clueless folks who don't know what they want are the majority is not only wrong, it's incredibly tired and boring. moreso than those you're complaining about.

Guess it must take Apple to take an action before others bother with the rationale for more memory. I don't mind that other users have their own opinions on the matter, but when coupled with what is essentially sticking their fingers in their ears and yelling bloody murder to ignore other opinions is just silly.

Very much looking forward to the increase as well. Hopefully the optimization goals for ios9 will work well enough that 2GB is sufficient for at least another iteration.

Spot on. Samsung's GS6 does 1080p and 4K recording. Pretty neat IMO.

But here comes to the usual Macrumor/Samsung bashing: 4k? WHY? THAT IS STUPID! Nobody needs that!

Tim Cook: Ladies and gentlemen, this new iPhone 6S is amazing in every way. And the camera has improved dramatically! For the first time ever, a 16MP iSight camera that does true 4K recording!

Same Macrumors poster: 4K? Awesome! Oh man, I can't wait to edit all of these 4k videos with iMovie! Apple raising the bar again!

Every year it's the same crap.
