I think this is a reasonable thing for them to do. Get rid of the 5, 5C, 5S altogether and make a 6C, 6Mini, 6- whatever they want to call it that could replace the 5S and be the free phone on contract. Keep the 4" screen from the 5S, and upgrade the internals to be equivalent to the 6, including TouchID and ApplePay functionality. That way everyone buying a new iPhone this fall will be set up to use ApplePay, without needing the watch.

If the large phones had existed first, and the 4" was being introduced only now, people would praise it for being an innovative, compact, ultra portable device. Everyone would be amazed to see how well iOS works on such a small screen.

This fills a new niche, the "small phone that works as well as the bigger ones", and will sell better and better as people forget Apple once made small phones.

I have come to love the 6 Plus, it seems smaller and smaller the more I use it. But it's hard to argue with my 5s. That thing is super light, I can put it in any pocket without thinking about it, and one handed operation is effortless.

I don't like cases. I'll never understand why people want to cover their beautiful phones with a plastic case. Granted, when you choose to get a case for your iPhone you might as well get the 5C.

I carry my 4S in this ultra-slim Sena sleeve.

Obviously one reason some people want to cover their devices is to protect them from damage and to keep them looking nice. They don't look so beautiful when they're broken, or when they're all scratched up and the screens are cracked. Also, I like the Apple logo, but logos are obnoxious and I'm not a logo wearing / logo flashing kind of person. I don't care who can tell I have the newest iPhone or iPad, etc.

Iphone 6c sounds okay but no colors this time apple Please.

It's not the colors that are the problem, it's the plastic/sense that it is a cheaper case. Which is exactly why the 5S and old metal design will completely go away now - it is expensive to manufacture and can't be justified in the lowest tier product.

I'd like to see them come out with about six colors in a *metal* body just like the 6/6+, that would involve some cool engineering. Also ALL models need to have uniform color ALL the way around the phone, including front, bezel, touch ID and RF bands on the back. Why the hell does the gold phone have a white front?

Hopefully the 6C won't be ultra-thin and instead have a decent battery and no camera bump. Or maybe they need to make a 6E (extended) and 6R (rugged) versions too. Samesung here we come!

I just pray they keep good specs in the 4 inch display!

I have large hands, I can palm a basketball easily, and I think the iPhone 6 display is simply to big.

When Steve Jobs said the 4 inch display was the perfect size because your thumb could easily manage the corner of the device, he couldn't have been more correct.

I will never understand this obsession with one handed use of an iPhone.

You're assuming people actually want to use their phone one handed. I can do every task 2-5 times faster by using both hands. Even with my work iPhone 5s, which is so incredibly tiny, I can type and maneuver faster using two hands. Using one hand is extremely slow.

On my personal 6+, two handed is basically required, but for people like me that prefer using our phones two handed and can't understand the obsession with one handed use, it just makes sense.

The point here is that people use their phones differently, have different hand sizes, etc. so multiple sizes (choice) is a good thing.

I like the C name :) The C stands for color and if they plan to release a color iPhone6 model it makes perfect sense to keep it. It's the S that always stands for something different every time it's released.

S in 3GS stood for “Speed”
S in 4S stood for “Siri”
S in 5S stood for “Security”

What will S be for this time?

If they could make 32Gb the entry level on all sizes. Every other feature is just a bonus.
I'm pretty sure the 16gb is a marketing move to urge users to purchase the 64gb...

The 6C will still be 16gb base with some option for more, hopefully for $50 or less.

I hope this is the time for Apple to put a flag in the hilltop and set the base storage as 32gb for all 6s/6s+ devices. Hopefully with a $50 upgrade to 64gb and then the 128gb option at another $100. Will they swallow $48 of profit? Maybe not, but it is killing the closed ecosystem to have phones with no free room for purchasing apps and content.

There was only one "c" previously and you are right it was lower specced. However by pretty much all accounts it was not a successful product, just like the iPad mini 3 by most accounts has not been a successful product. Maybe they learned from that and realize the people want a smaller device, not a smaller and less powerful device.

No, if it sells that poorly, they will just not make one. Plus, maybe it sold poorly here and in Europe, but what about emerging markets?

I think the 4.7 model is about perfect. I would even go as large as 5.0, but 5.5 is just too big.

That's a good idea on the name and very consistent with Apple's naming policy. They should make it have the 6s innerds though (top spec). Been using my 6 very happily, however the small size for use and transportability might have me jump to a 4" 6s if Apple offered it - and Mini would be the right branding.

I still prefer the Small, Medium and Large branding of:

iPhone S
iPhone M
iPhone L

The 4 inch as the article alludes will probably be the 6C

and if they're continuing the usual "C" model from the 5C then it wont be the same specs. The 4 incher (6C) will have the specs of the last generation phone like the 5C did.

So I think it's very possible they could easily make a 4 inch 6C this year that has last year's Iphone 6 specs. I mean honestly I feel like a 4 inch Iphone 6 could've been made last year and still fit the same specs aside from maybe the exact same battery life.

I wouldn't want a 6C. To me "C" stands for crippled. I want a 4 inch 6S mini.

I enjoyed when Apple had one screen size. Apple argued that was much better than competitors with dozens of different sizes and resolutions.

App developers, does 3 screen sizes make things much more complicated? Anyway, in my opinion 4.7" iPhone is the right sized iPhone. Hard to imagine using a 4" screen anymore.

Wrong.

As long as the resolution scales, it doesn't matter. The developer doesn't need to include multiple resolutions of images.

Android resolutions requires apps to have different layouts because of resolution differences.

As much as I think I want a 6+, I've never gotten rid of my 5S because it doesn't seem old or slow to me.

6s plus here for me:) I can see apple selling a 4" phone .. a lot of people I know want an updated 5s. I really hope they shrink the bezels some but that is being saved for the 7 most likely.

Phone sizing has become insanely competitive. The best phone ever has been my favorite since childhood. No batteries, facetime is flawless and I can drink a beer from it too.

They won't change the size of the 6 seeing as it's been such a success.

I personally would like it a fraction smaller, say a 4.5" screen size along with smaller top and bottom bezels. But they won't change a thing for the 6s.

It would be funny to me if they marketed the 6c at women. I bought the 6+ and found it too big because I like to use it one-handed. My wife preferred the larger screen largely because she wanted to increase to improve the readability for her aging eyes. So she has a 6+ in Zoom mode with larger-than-normal fonts. I have the regular 6 because I like the smaller size and easier one-handed usage and I have my resolution set to max out the amount of data on-screen and have my fonts set to the smallest size.

As far as younger women (with good eyesight) are concerned, I see tons of them around everyday using large screened devices (iPhone or Android). When you get a bit younger in age (e.g., a teenager like my daughter) I could see the girls preferring the regular 6 or 6c to the 6+ but only because they like to stick it in their back pocket and the 6+ is too big to do that without half of it sticking out of your pocket (plus it has to be uncomfortable to sit down). The regular 6 borders on being too big to stick in your back pocket as well.

Agreed. I don't care if they act like they are soooo generous for giving us all that, or calling it something "only apple can do": Just give my a 32GB baseline. You know, like others did in late 2013

Yeah.. just no. If the SIMPLE 6 is too big for you you CAN'T palm a basketball. Cmon man, i can palm one and i can easily use the 6 PLUS one-handed. What are you talking about.... There are basically no more 4" inches phones. And that's for a reason.

The most sensible approach would be if they repeated what they did in 2013

Give the current iPhone 6 a plastic body, and call it the 6C, drop existing 6 altogether, and make the 5S free with contract.

You would still have the 6S and 6S plus as new phones.

For those of you who are misinformed, the iPhone 5C is not and was never a "failure"!
